Rapper Ja Rule has appeared in a Toronto, Canada, courtroom Monday morning to face a charge of assault.
The artist -- real name Jeffrey Atkins -- turned himself in to police earlier Monday to face charges stemming from a violent nightclub knife attack last month, which left a teenager in hospital.
Ja Rule's latest legal worries come after the rapper was arrested this month for the possession of drug marijuana and driving without a license in New York. | | Reply To this Message

American rapper Ja Rule will plead not guilty to assault charges brought by Toronto police, his lawyer said Monday.
"You can underline that three times," Steven Skurka said outside court after setting a pretrial date for Oct. 6.
The 28-year-old performer, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, did not attend the hearing.
Skurka said he expects the case will go to trial in early 2005.
The star, who lives in New Jersey but had been frequenting Toronto for film shoots, was charged with assault causing bodily harm last month.
A publication ban was placed on evidence surrounding the charges. At the time, Atkins made a brief court appearance and was let out on S7,600 bail.
The lyricist is best known for hits like "Holla, Holla" and duets with Jennifer Lopez ("I'm Real") and Ashanti ("Always on Time").

A week after Ja Rule pleaded guilty to punching a Canadian man at a bar, the man is suing the rapper for $4 million in a civil lawsuit.
On March 14, the rapper was fined $1,200 after pleading guilty to assault.
The hip-hop star, real name Jeffrey Atkins, got into a fight with a reveler in Toronto's La Rouge nightspot in June 2003, recently accepting that he had delivered "one punch to the eye."
The civil lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in Ontario Superior Court.
