Palestinian gunmen in Gaza kidnapped Ghazi Jabali, the police chief of Gaza and the West Bank, eyewitnesses and Palestinian security officials said Friday.

In phone calls to Palestinian news organizations, a group called the Jenin Brigades, which belongs to the Popular Resistance Committee, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Palestinian security officials confirmed the kidnapping. The officials said Jabali was traveling in a convoy from Nusseirat refugee camp to Gaza City when gunmen stopped him.
In ensuing clashes, one of his bodyguards was wounded, officials said.

Witnesses in the Bureij refugee camp said Mahmoud Nashabat, the head of the Jenin Brigades, was parading Jabali through the camp on foot, while the entrance to the camp was being blocked to police and journalists.

The Popular Resistance Committee is a coalition of militant groups, including Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Fatah and others.
It is not yet known if Palestinian infighting is linked to the abduction.

With Israel planning its withdrawal from Gaza, many observers believe rival groups will jockey for power in the Palestinian enclave.

Egypt has expressed a willingness to train Palestinian police such as Jabali, and some Palestinians have criticized Egypt's proposed role in the transition.

Until this situation with militancy is taken care of, Palestinians and Israelis will never have any hope for peace.

Palestinians have long accused
officials of corruption and bribery

The Palestinian chief of police for the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank has been released after being briefly kidnapped by Palestinian armed men, reported Aljazeera's correspondent.

The Jenin Martyrs' Brigade, part of President Yasir Arafat's Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for abducting Ghazi al-Jabali on Friday.

Abu Iyad, a spokesman for the Brigade, told Aljazeera that al-Jabali was kidnapped "to hold him accountable for his mistakes against our people."

Iyad alleged that al-Jabali was corrupt and accused him of "making and accepting bribes, thereby undermining the progress of the Palestinian people".

He demanded that al-Jabali be removed from his post.

Iyad said that there were other officials who shared al-Jabali's misdemeanours.

Corruption charges

The Palestinian police force - along with Arafat's Palestinian Authority - have been accused of corruption in the past.

Palestinian security sources said his release followed negotiations between the kidnappers and senior Palestinian officials, without elaborating on the details of the agreement.

The agreement included a promise from Arafat to replace al-Jabali if he was immediately released, reported Aljazeera.net's correspondent in Gaza, quoting Israeli sources. However, this could not be independently confirmed.

Members of the Brigade ambushed the car carrying al-Jabali in the Gaza Strip and exchanged fire with his bodyguards, said witnesses who were on the street where the incident happened five km south of Gaza City.

At least one bodyguard was injured in the incident, reported Aljazeera's correspondent Hiba Akila, quoting witnesses.

Power struggle?

The unidentified men broke the car windows, then kidnapped the police official and took him to an unknown destination, the witnesses said.

The kidnappers headed towards the al-Biraiji refugee camp in central Gaza, reported Akila.

Acting as Gaza's police chief for most of the past 10 years since limited self-rule was established, al-Jabali has been the target of several attacks by groups vying for influence in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Jabali has been accused of

In April, an explosion destroyed the front entrance of his Gaza home. Al-Jabali had left the house shortly before the blast.
A month before that attack armed men fired at his office. He was unhurt.

Al-Jabali has long been on Israel's wanted list over alleged
involvement in anti-Israeli attacks. The Israeli army declined
comment on the kidnapping.

Human Rights Watch has called on Arafat in the past to denounce the Palestinian security forces' attacks and detentions of journalists under al-Jabali.

I'm starting to figure him out. I now know that he has reasoning skills, so we will have to clash over the Israel issue again because I am better able to "listen" to him now. I want to know his EXACT stance on the Palestinian/ Israel issue and "his" solution(s). The quote you posted in # 21 is hard for me to fathom. I understand your position and we probably have similar views, but I now respect him enough to listen to his reasons. We'll see.

Now before you so rudely took this conversation off course, I think militancy definitely is a problem for the peace process. You have to look at the reason why these young men join these groups. I think saying it's hatred for Israel because it's Israel is far too simplistic. It ignores some of the real problems that they're having over there.

I think this occupation is causing too much pain for people on both sides. It really needs to end, what should be taken to ensure this peace is a more difficult answer. I say forget trying to assign right and wrong, because both sides are wrong. You can't bulldoze people's homes along with their neighbors because someone in the family committed a suicide attack. You just recruited a new suicide bomber. At the same time, you must be outspoken and active to curb the militants in your country because when the other guy comes over with a tank, you can't just act as if you've done nothing.

It used to be that one was a Jew by having the lineage of the father. But that changed and I dont remember when or why that was changed. I know of guys in Hebrew school who have been razzed by their peers because only their father was Jewish. And the kids made fun of them because they didnt believe they were Jewish.

My stepmother is Jewish. I know this doesnt make me a Jew by bloodline, yet we have all the traditions. Her mother and father were Conservative Jews. Her mother is still alive and goes to synagogue every Sabbath.
Then there are those in the family who are Orthodox (Hasidic) Jews, her cousin is an Orthodox rabbi.

Then of course, there are cousins etc. who have converted to Christianity.

Family is so important to Jews, more than any race I have ever seen.

I told you, I know I am not Jewish by bloodline. I never claimed that. But as a Christian I am an adopted son of Abraham, and therefore a child of the same Jehovah God. So, I am a child of Jehovah and HE is my father.
Nothing anyone says can make it otherwise, because God knows who is children are and you or anyone else who disputes that cannot cannot change that.

So, you dont upset me by saying I am not Jewish. Because God knows I am His child and that is all that matters.

As far as Jews as a race of people. Yes, they are a race of people. Evil men have tried to destroy them throught the centuries, yet they are still alive...and that, my friend, is a miracle.
