Hermione performed "Silencio" to one of the deatheaters.

"But the Death Eater Hermione had just struck dumb made a sudden slashing movement with his wand from which flew a streak of what looked like purple flame. It passed right across Hermione's chest; she gave a tiny "oh!" as though in surprise and then crumpled onto the floor where she lay motionless."

What spell did the death eater try to perform on her? It's obviously a strong one, because even though he wasn't able to speak, he was able to knock her unconscious. In fact, Harry thought she was dead. Neville must have thought so too because he was looking for a pulse. Dolonov threatened Harry with the same thing if he didn't give him the prophecy. Obviously it wasn't the killing curse, because this one was purple and the Avada Kedavra curse is green. When Hermione is in the hospital he finds out that she has pain her ribs and according to Madame Pomfrey it caused "quite enough damage to be going on with." She had to take 10 types of potions a day.

Any ideas what curse the death eater tried to use on her?

No clue. I do think it was dark magic though.

How could it be anything other than dark magic? Unless it was something Madam Malkin uses to cut her material with...

I think more of a mystery is what Happened to Ron in the Department of Mysteries to make him a giggling idiot.

I think we should learn about what happened to Hermione in the next book.

Here's the exact quotes from the chapter...

{"Harry," said Ron, giggling weakly, lurching forward, seizing the front of Harry's robes and gazing at him with unfocused eyes. "There you are...Ha ha ha...You look funny, Harry...You're all messed up..."
Ron's face was very white and something dark was trickling from the corner of his mouth. Next moment his knees had given way, but he still clutche the front of Harry's robes...}

Okay Luna tells us that they went into a dark room full of planets where some of the time they wer floating in the dark. Luna was able to save Ginny but she's not sure what hit Ron to make him go funny.

I am kind of worried about what may have hit him and why it made his eyes unfocused and bleeding from the mouth, not to mention the giggles.

Ron grabbed the brains after he went all funny. We don't know what made him funny.

Maybe what was dripping from his mouth wasn't blood, maybe it was something he drank...or was fed..

No a paragraph later it says a blood bubble burst from his mouth. It's definitely blood.

"There were still deep welts on his forearms where the brain's tentacles had wrapped around him. According to Madam Pomfrey, thoughts could leave deeper scarring than almost anything else, though since she had started applying copious amounts of Dr. Ubbly's Oblivious Unction, there seemed to be some improvement."

Who's thoughts were in that brain?

The book says that Dumbledore went into the forrest and got her back. If he could handle Voldemort, I think a group of Centaurs would be no problem.

Anyway, I wonder what the spell could do if the words were said?

I don't think it says how the brain was removed. I would assume that the aurors took care of it when they went to the DOM.

It doesn't ever say how the brain was removed from Ron's hands, but he was doing a pretty good job fighting it off despite being in a 'funny' state. I'm sure a fully trained wizard would've had no problem getting it off him. Like Sherry said, probably an auror.

Don't you think Dumbledore would have sent a few of the aurors to find the other kids and help them?
