ALANIS GETS ENGAGED

Isn't it ironic? Alanis Morissette, who made her name with poignant, angry songs about wrecked relationships, is engaged.

The 30-year-old singer says her boyfriend, actor Ryan Reynolds, has asked her to marry him, according to Us Weekly magazine. The couple hasn't set a date yet.

Morissette and the star of the movie "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" started dating by e-mail two years ago.

"I knew early on that he was someone I could spend the rest of my life with," she told the magazine for its June 28 issue. "I just feel like we're family and we're on this journey of evolving together. He's courageous, he'll talk about anything, he takes responsibility, he's just unbelievable."

Reynolds, 27, flew to Ottawa to ask Morissette's parents for permission to propose to her -- which the singer didn't know about. He also helped design her 2.5 carat emerald-cut platinum ring, and got down on one knee to give it to her.

"We were at home," she said. "It was very simple, pure and sweet -- and shocking!"

Morissette, whose songs include "Ironic" and "You Oughta Know," has won several Grammys, including album of the year for 1995's "Jagged Little Pill."

ALANIS FOUGHT ANOREXIA

Pop star Alanis Morissette has revealed she fought anorexia as a teenager because she grew up convinced she wasn't good enough.

The newly engaged Canadian singer admits she had huge body image issues as a teen and spent years turning her back on anorexia.

She says, "As a young girl, I felt demeaned, and that hurt me. I made that to mean that I was bad and terrible. There was a lot of focus on what the external was.

"I struggled with eating disorders all through my teen years. ... Some of it was just because of magazines and society and messages and family and school and everything."

Morissette states she only learned to stop struggling when she learned to accept herself as she was.

She adds, "I can love the fact that I'm very stupid and very smart, that I'm brilliant and an idiot, vulnerable and powerful and everything in between, and then I'm much more peaceful, because I'm not fighting against any part of myself anymore.

"The struggle is gone. The struggle of resisting certain parts of myself, trying to hide it, is gone."

Rock chick Alanis Morissette tells us she can't wait to walk up the aisle with her Canadian actor boyfriend Ryan Reynolds.

The 30-year-old singer, who protested about men and marriage on her hit album Jagged Little Pill, said: "It used to scare the living daylights out of me but now I'm really happy to be getting married. I'm looking forward to defining what marriage is in 2004."

Wonder what sort of wedding she'll have? I doubt it will be traditional with a big puffy white merangue dress!
