Why do the double standard exist in the M.E.? |
| Posted by: oneofpeace | | As we see the Arab/Muslim world complain about Israel and the US support for this nation, we continually see double standards among those of the Muslim community.
I think it’s quite clear how the Arabs/Muslims feel about Israel and the US but why do they feel this way is the question. Some here point out that it’s because Israel is trying to take their land while others who support Palestinians say it’s because Israel treat them oppressively including murdering innocent Palestinians.
I have pointed out on numerous occasions how Arabs & Muslims seem to completely ignore others in the treatment of their own but scream loudly when they perceive Israel or the US mistreating their fellow Muslim or Arab brothers unjustly and some time ago, posted a thread on it. And like in that thread (click here) we have those that want to dismiss it as “a different subject” when it points to the heart this issue of which I believe is racial intolerance.
I read this article today which further solidifies my point, that even when other nations outside of their own treat Muslims with such distain and inhumanities, they continue to ignore it and instead doggedly hold to their position of hating Israel and the US for events in the Israeli/Palestinian territories.
In 1995, Milosevic ordered the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia. If not for then President Clinton and NATO, Milosevic would have been successful in his efforts. The entire world saw the Muslims in Bosnia being deposed of their land and subsequently slaughtered by the thousands yet no Muslim leaders or their people made any outcry against these actions to this day.
Today Bosnian Serb officials admitted to killing over 8,000 Muslims in an effort the ethnically cleanse that land.
| quote: |
“Bosnian Serb officials have acknowledged for the first time that their security forces carried out the massacre of up to 8,000 Muslims at Srebrenica, according to an investigative report Friday.”
“U.N. and Muslim experts have found the remains of about 5,000 of the victims from mass graves across eastern Bosnia and find new remains every month. The fate of the others is still unknown.”

Now as usual I can hear those of you saying (AZ, TWBR, etc) that this has nothing to do with what Israel has done and is another story. In fact this is always the response when pointing out such hypocrisies but I beg to differ.
Much can be said about this conflict in that region and it has. And much of it has been jaded to reflect the position of those posting instead of the actual truth, especially on many websites used to collaborate positions in this forum. The truth is there’s much blame to go around on both sides of this issue but when I look outside of that region, there is many inconsistencies among Muslims that stand in direct contradiction of their position on Israel.
So what is the truth here and why do we have those that subscribe to such positions while totally ignoring worse atrocities committed against their own by others including themselves? Some of you may think of this as irrelevant (and conveniently so) but if you really want justice, why is it limited justice focused against one particular ethnicity?
I believe this is a reasonable question and it deserves a reasonable answer. If you’re waiting to respond to it with “that has nothing to do with this” then I already know that position. However if you have something else to share, please feel free to do so, including why you believe it’s another issue. Not that these facts I posted above will change your positions one way or the other but I really seek understanding here as to why the double standard exist in the first place. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: TWBR | | Reading you, OneOfPeace, running your mouth, i noticed that you decided to use Bosnia's massacre of 7,000 Muslims.
So as i was reading, i thought that you were running your mouth about how us Muslims only whine about what Israel and the U.S does to Muslims, but reading on, i noticed that for some reason you think that it was Muslims who massacred those 7,000 Muslims, well OneOfPeace, i have news for you, the country is divided three ways-Muslims, Croats, and Serbs and it was the Serbs who massacred the 7,000 Muslims. | | Reply To this Message

ONE did not place responsibility for the deaths of Muslims in Serbia on the Muslims - he said it was the Bosnian Serbs. I think you missed his point - that Muslims are so obsessed with Israel that they tend to ignore or minimize other atrocities committed against Muslims, or even those committed BY Muslims, while making a huge outcry about everything that Israel does.
The Muslim world needs to quit obsessing about Israel and focus on defining its own destiny. The Arab world in general is too bound up at defining itself in opposition to Zionism. It needs to focus on addressing its own internal problems - and those problems are numerous.
I leave you with a quote from the great Arab author Fouad Ajami, from his book "The Dream Palce of the Arabs." The highlighted portion is most relevant, but the entire passage is an interesting metaphor:
"Unloved and unclaimed, this great accommodation between Israel and Palestinian nationalism had a force all its own. It was bigger than the political players caught up in it. It had going for it the fatigue of the protagonists, their recognition of the entanglement of their destinies. The truth of this entanglement was captured in a dazzling work of fiction written in the mid-1980's - Arabesques by Anton Shammas, an Israeli Arab novelist of the finest literary sensibility-that the work was written in Hebrew by a Christian Arab from Galilee was a commentary all its own on the layers of this deadly, intimate conflict. In that work that summoned the fight for Palestine in 1948, Shammas produced one of the most memorable of metaphors for that conflict. The Palestinian narrator's Galilean village is about to fall to the Jewish forces, and from somewhere a flute is whipped out to its strains, as the villagers break out into a "dance which had in it something of the joy of those who had been passed over by a fatal decree, and something of the pleasure of submission of the weak, and something of fawning before the stranger, and something of the canniness of the villager who draws the most unexpected weapon at the most unexpected moment ... One way or the other by the time the feet tired of the dance and the capriciousness of the defeated had cooled down, all those present at the ceremony were covered with a thin layer of dust, and as is the way of all dust, it did not distinguish between the conquering soldier and the conquered villager." A swirl of dust had covered everyone there, and a nemesis overtook the victor's triumph. Vanquished, the Palestinians had hitched a ride on the coattails of a successful Zionist enterprise. As the world batters the modern Arab inheritance, the rhetorical need for Anti-Zionism grows. But there rises, too, the recognition that it is time for the imagination to steal away from Israel and to look at the Arab reality, to behold its own view of the kind of world the Arabs want for themselves ."

| Posted by: TWBR | | Ok, so if thats why he made the thread then i understand.
Also, this happened in 1995, how are we sure that the Muslim world didnt complain?
Go to the Al'Jazeera homepage and you'll see a report about it. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: oneofpeace | | TWBR I only ask that you read the thread before posting as your previous posts are unresponsive to the original thread. I only perceive this action from you as immediate rejection of it (probably because it is I who post it) instead of being of open mind.
Still, you have not responded to the question I asked. Instead you point to Al Jazeera's website. Surely you cannot say that with any reasonable voice that the Muslim world did outcry about this.
When the US bombed Afghanistan in response to 9/11, Muslims in many countries made such a loud cry and attacked US Embassies in their lands. Can you imagine if the US or Israel had done such a thing as this Serbian leader has done?
There are stories about Serbia on other Muslim websites but that is not my point. My point is why do they make it known loudly to the world when Israel or the US engage Muslim countries and raise little voice when others commit atrocities like ethnic cleansing and deposition of lands among their own?
Clearly there is a double standard here and I asked your opinion as to why this exist. Can you do that without being closed minded or immediately dismissive? What I stated above are facts nothing more so why not answer genuinely? If you believe that this isn't fact then simply point that out. Pointing to an article on Al Jazeera about it is nothing in comparison to how the Muslim world raise issue with Israel. | | Reply To this Message

Merkava said this in post #3 :

I'm talking about the land itself. |
I understand this Merk, however I made a point about that land and how Jordan got most of it yet this matters little to Muslims or Arabs.
I think AZ gave me the most responsive and reasonable answer to why he believes this is so in another thread. He stated that maybe it's possible they don't raise issue with Jordan because they are Arabs and Israel isn't.
I happen to agree with him on that point, however it does little for the sake of Palestinians who stay in refugee camps and are refused citizenship in Jordan and other neighboring Arab states.
What they accuse Israel of goes on around the world many times over ane far wores yet there is no adaquate response from the Muslim world concerning it or at the very least pales in comparison to how they complain about Israel.

| Posted by: woolfe99 | | I'd bet a broad analysis of Arab media would show that there is as much or more coverage of a single incident where 2 Palestinians are killed by the IDF than there was of the entire Bosnian affair that resulted in 8000 Muslim deaths. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: TWBR | | I have access to the Arab Media so i can clear up any accusations that Zionists make against it , since the incident happened in 1995 and at the time i was young and wasnt even in the states so i cant say if its true or not. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: devildog | | Of coarse there is a double standard. Good grief. If you say otherwise, you are either intellectually dishonest or you are historically challenged. I believe the short answer is this; Anytime a Muslim can get a fragment of negative press from an American or Jew, they love it. They use this to confirm,so to speak, what their god tells them. It's like; SEE!!! I told you. Now lets go wipe them out till the last as Allah has told us. Anything that goes against what Allah said is quickly swept under the rug. For example: The prison situation. They used this story to tell them that we ALL are this way. Never mind that their entire family was tortured and killed by Muslims there a few months ago....it is the Americans fault. Now, I have made an evidence rich case destroying Islam and its sole prophet. What do Muslims do when faced with this proof? They say the messenger is a liar. Even though he has proved it with THEIR scriptures! When Islam is understood( don't want to take this off coarse Peace), you would know that Mo himself said to lie in order to fool the infidels. They laugh at us over there, people. The "legal lie" is working perfectly for them. Our president has perpetuated the biggest lie Islam would have us believe-Islam is a peaceful religion. Another example of the "legal lie" is that Jihad is a spiritual struggle. With the hours I have invested in debating Muslims, I can tell you this; Do not expect this to change anytime soon. Islam turns a brain to mush. | | Reply To this Message
