| Posted by: Lakota | | I've taken St.John's Wort as an alternative to perscribed anti-depressants (my parents didn't want to pay for a psychiatrist basically). My advice is to stick to the dosage specifically and don't expect much of a change until about 2 weeks. Don't get into the bad habit of just overdosing whenever you are in a bad mood. It won't hurt you since they're all natural, but it can't help much. So I say, it's worth a shot! St.John's Wort was recommended to me specifically by a social worker, so it's not an empty claim! | | Reply To this Message

Kava-Kava and Valerian Root are two others, you can try too. |
Thanks..I have used them in the past and they absolutely do not affect me.
I am now taking Kiri St. Johns Wort. Its German made and certified by testing. I am feeling much better now.
I even get sleepy enough to want to go to bed, and my mood is on an up note all day.
Will post more results after I have been using it for a time.

| Posted by: Lakota | | The St.John's Wort that I have is from Sun-village brand. It hasn't worked too well for me, I'll have to try the Kiri Brand!! So what else are you taking it for, or is it just for insomnia? | | Reply To this Message

Sun makes low priced stuff under various names. You never know how good the product is.
CVS Drugs carry Kiri.
If you have read my previous posts beginning in December you will know that it's not only for Insomnia. Most posters know what I went through.
I can only tell you that the stuff is working wonders for me.
Much better than Presciption Drugs.
Let me know how you do.

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | While it is natural, that does not mean it cannot hurt you. Experts don't know enough about St. John's Wort to call it safe. There are some known side effects. Never take more than the recommended dose, and if you are feeling depressed you really should seek professional advice. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lakota | | I've overdosed on it before, nothing really happened to me... but then again, like becker says, I had the sun brand (which isn't that great)
Did you know that vitamin B-12 is supposed to reduce depression? I get lots of that in my diet, but it doesn't seem to be working. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | There is no evidence that B 12 reduces depression. Lack of it, may cause lethargy, but increasing your intake hasn't been proven to reduce depression. | | Reply To this Message

From my experience, B-12 may be absorbed somewhat by subliminal approach..However it is only partially absorbed into the bloodstream by oral ingestion.
I used it in past years by having a Doctor give me shots. That works well. But it is not convenient.
As far as I can tell by my in-depth research..St. Johns Wort is and has been used extensively in Europe for a long time.
The only side effect I can find is that if you are light-skinned , exposure to sunlight may redden your skin..That's it.

Please be careful. When I go outdoors, I cover up with sunblock....SPF 50. ...So I have had no problem. Maybe St. Johns is not for you. But its the only thing that works for me so I have no choice. And I have tried everything else.
Be very careful. Get on Google and check it out.

| Posted by: Lakota | | ooh wow, yea st.johns really does affect the skin and UV rays...i already have to spray on this stuff that the hospital gave to me every time i go outside... so i think i should stay away from anything that affects skin.
i don't know what else to take though. my parents don't want to pay for a psycologist or perscriptions or anything. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | If you take oral birth control, St. John's Wort can affect the reliablility of that also. | | Reply To this Message

May I suggest you go to your nearest "Health Food" store and ask someone there who is knowledgeable. Thats where I go if I need advice.
I could suggest some things, but you should go there. Good luck.
