Oscar De La Hoya won a world title in a record sixth division with a very close unanimous decision over WBO middleweight champion Felix Sturm Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. De La Hoya went right after Sturm with a strong body attack early while Sturm had good success with a hard jab. Oscar continued to outthrow Sturm, but both fighters landed at a similar clip. The rest of the rounds (6-12) were very tactical with Sturm dictating the pace mush of the time. Scores were 115-113 on all cards with all three judges awarding De La Hoya the final round and the win. After the fight, Oscar admitted "everything went wrong" and said he was disappointed with his performance. He added that he is still planning to face Bernard Hopkins in September. Sturm said after the fight "I was the better fighter and I won the fight...everyone saw who won." (More to come) |
