Thread open to dementors. How difficult is it to produce a patronus in the presence of a dementor and how many wizards are able to do this? Is their strenght in numbers? How effective are they for Voldemort?

I have one as a pet.

But seriously, not that I wasn't being serious (or Sirius! Haha! Ok...bad joke...), I would hate to be near a dementor. Ick...I like being happy!

I would imagine it would be very difficult to produce a patronus when you are feeling so upset. I just want to know how many wizards can really do this.

We are going to find out in the next book what Dudley heard or saw when the dementors were near him. I am thinking it was an empty refrigerator.

The Dark Lord is not vulnerable to the powers of a dementor.The Dark Lord had a very traumatic childhood.He was at an orphanage and was daily abused by the other children.Anyone must see what a great man he is...even though the other children were phsicaly stronger than him he had the courage to stand up to them,and he never used his powers against them.The Dark Lord has many sad memories.We all must follow him.Let's do it for the Dark Lord,for the good wizarding comminity,for the good World.

Tommy-poo must have some very bad memories, but he is strong enought to produce a proper patronus. Harry was able to drive away 100 with his stag patronus. The big questions is are most average wizards able to do this?

And the answer is ......No!
A wizard producing a patronus is not as rare as an Animagus but is rare.Most wizards can't produce a physically patronus because they haven't really learned to do it right.In school they would most probably try to do it but won't have the time because they would need to learn spells that are most commonly used.
The patronus spell is used against Dementors and against the those creatures that suffocate you.A ordinary wizard would not be confronted with these kind of creatures.At least that's what I think.

Correct, Nion... Harry's ability to preform a TRUE, and full, patronus is a huge accomplishment.
Older wizards are astounded to learn that Harry has this capability...

We also have to wonder if Dumbledore's Army can produce them in front of a real dementor. I will bet 90% of the kids would not be able to do it.

I happen to agree with you, Sherry.... I guess that we could find out in book 6 or 7.

I can't wait to see the Dementors on the big screen on Saturday! It will be cool.

POA Lupin says that many qualified wizards have difficulty with the Patronus Charm.

No, she doesn't seem to do too well with the DADA magic. She doesn't seem to have the interest in it though. So, we know that she's going to be in the fight in a different way, right? I mean, others can fight off the dementors.

Maybe she will try to sick the house elves on them.

I would assume that the dementors will have targets that Voldemort sends them after. They will work in groups to make it harder for a patronus to work.
