GO IRAQI PEOPLE!

That was quite a sight to see Iraqis carrying a big banner saying, "Go Home You Human Shields."

Appropriate timing. I just watched the largest statue of Saddam in Iraq be pulled down to the ground in the centre of Baghdad, surrounded by a crowd of cheering Iraqi onlookers. We have bombed and raided his palaces, destroyed his communications, and crushed his military, yet this is the real symbol of the end for his regime.

The US forces covered the face of the statue with an American flag for a short time while they were making the preparations. This flag was removed shortly afterwards, and replaced by an old Iraqi flag brought by one of the people in the crowd. (Phew! Close one!)

Immediately afterwards, the crowd rushed at the statue, jumping on it and smashing it with whatever they could get thier hands on. This scenario is repeating itself all over Baghdad, and indeed even all over Iraq, as more symbols of Saddams rule are demolished.

Have to wonder if what we are seeing is the majority Iraqi's or the minority. Let's face it, the western media can slant it anyway they want.

The only way we have of judging that at this point is through the media, and so far the message coming from the media seems pretty clear. There are no doubt people who are opposed to what is happening though. Just the same as if you looked on the streets of many countries before the war, it would appear that most were opposed to it, but the fact is there was a pretty even divide, it's just there weren't too many pro-war marches.

The people who are opposed to what is going on will be in thier houses, staying away from the commotion of outside. When a government starts being put in place, and the people start feeling more comfortable with the US as an occupying force, those people will either change thier minds, or stand up and be counted. Time will tell.

Western media? The Arab media were there too. All the world's media were there. Some people will choose not to believe even if God (whatever God you believe in) himself came down.

I'm not saying that it is not happening. I hope that what is being shown, is the majority of Iraqi's. However, I never take anything at face value, because the media from all nations, can and have shown things from their point of veiw. One of the reasons I come to this message board is to see other opinons that I do not see in by the Canadian or US media.
