I have installed Medal of Honor, and every time that I go to connect to play online, or connect via ip address, it just times out, with no connection. It's telling me that I don't have an internet connection... but, obviously, I do, since I'm online, and getting e mails as well.

Can anyone help me out?

I've had this problem with my Diablo game as well. I can play the single player, but I can't get on the server, or connect to play with someone via ip address.

I have always been able to do this, but not on my laptop. I meet all the requirements.

HELP!!!

Someone move this to the computer and tech support forum

Do you use dial-up?

No, I'm on a cable modem.

KJ, do you have a firewall installed and running while you are trying to play that game?

M.

its prolly your firewall, maybe the network settings for it spacificly... if you want to connect to someone's game via IP, then add his/her ip in the "trust zone" or whatever your firewall calls it. it may also be a port problem, which also has to be configured in your firewall or on your router/hub if you have one. also make sure the other person your trying to connect to is also letting you connect to them by means of firewall ect. i dont know whatelse to say, i need to know more about your computer settings

Posted by: Lawless

Nope... I have no firewall. I had ZoneAlarm, but I uninstalled it from my computer.

Do you have a router?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Yes, I do! DUH! That's got an automatic firewall on it, I believe, doesn't it?
What do I do???

I have the router because Heidi and I each have a laptop connected to our service.

NAT routers indeed do have a firewall which is activated by default. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to routers, mostly because I have never dealt with them. We need Josh or Ron for this. If Chodder knows about them, that is good.

Yes, I am hoping that Josh will come around. He really knows computers.

For the record... I have a Linksys router. Don't know the series/number, since I'm not at home right now.

Shes trying to connect to my ip. Ive had other people on my server so I dont think its me

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

No, but if there is something in my router that is blocking the connection, that would explain things.
Now I just need to know how to "alter" whatever it is.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Advance

I have linksys too, and I am able to play online games. I would check your network settings and see if anything "firewall" related.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Okay... WHERE do I check my network settings? I don't know where a lot of things are.

If I am thinking what Advance is thinking, they should be in your Control Panel. If you have a windows firewall active, you need to disable that.

M.

Okay... so I need to look in the Network and Connections section. I will do that when I get home and see if there's something there.

Reply To this Message

Phew, I thought I was only having these problems trying to connect, KJ. I have zonealarm, so I'll have to turn that off.

If you have XP (like me) you can go to administrative tools under control panel. Then go to services, and STOP internet connection firewall. That will turn off any built-in firewall your computer may have. It helped me when I was playing command and conquer, you just have to remember to turn it off whenever you want to play.

Hopefully this will solve your problem and mine as well.

Thank you, Spaliznad... I'm going to look in there tonight when I get home.

I really appreciate everyone's helping me out with this. It's frustrating.

I hope everything works out for the both of us. I wanna frag chodder and Mr. F.

Check to see what port Medal of Honor uses. You will probably only need to insure that port is being passed thru.

I found this

quote:
port number set net_port ##### Set prot number for game. Default:12203

Make sure you have port 12203 open unless you have changed the port number.

How do I find what port, Ron?

Reply To this Message

Log into your router, usually it's at http://192.168.1.1/

I'm not sure which Linksys router you have, but if it's like mine
enter the password to get in
Click on Advance
Click on Forwarding

You can IM me if you need to.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Okay, so I will go to that address... but what do you mean enter the password? I don't have a password on my router.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

I just clicked on that link you gave me and it can't find the server.

better late than never i guess. all the good suggestions have been taken, though.

definitely do what spaliznad suggested and make sure your windows firewall is disabled.

if that link ron posted doesn't do anything for you, then double check your paperwork for your router if you still have it. if you do, then there should be an ip address in there listed for you to make configuration adjustments to your router. if you don't then post the model number if you can. that ip address will take you to the internal server of your router where you can change your settings and such. in there you can do what ron said and allow the MOH traffic to 'pass through' the router. i think if you can get inside your router there may even be a list of common games pre-defined for you to use.

one thing i would like you to expand on if you can is what you said in your first post.

are you saying that at home you can connect with your desktop but not your laptop? or some other scenario?

Ok I worked with KJ a bit and turns it wasn't a port problem or if it was she has more problems than that. Here is the error that she is getting.

"Server connection timed out"

I don't play games so, I'm of little help. I think someone who is familar with the game needs to jump in.

Thanks, Ron.... I just don't know WHAT to do.

kris, have you ever been able to connect to an online game from home? and just MOH and diable give you problems?

one more thing. you mentioned a laptop. is this your primary computer or do you have a desktop too? if you do, have you tried playing MOH between these two? just to see if you can?

You have to download the v1.11 patch. After that then the message will go away. I had the same problem and got the same message. Then I got the patch and it had worked ever since. I will try to find a link to download it... on the official site they want you to "buy it"... yeah right

Reply To this Message

Posted by: chodder

This link should take you directly to a site that will allow you to download a free patch.

and thus chodder presents the most simple and obvious solution. and it is probably the right one. you don't happen to live at 221b Baker Street do you chodder?

No, I gave my desktop to my mom when I got my laptop. I played Diablo all the time on the desktop, and I think once or twice on my laptop. But, all of a sudden, when I try to play again (it's been a year) it won't connect. Never had MOH before... but they both do the same thing.

Those are the only games that I've tried that are online gaming...

Don't know what else to do! I'm truly at a loss.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Chodder, I will try that... but I thought that I did the patch. I will do that tonight when I get home from work. See if that will help!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Mr. F

She told me on the phone that she cant even get onto Gamespy, you dont need the patch to do that

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Hey Ron, I'm going to disconnect the router, and just run the main line into my computer and try that. I will call you tonight and we will see if that does the trick. If so, then we know that it's the router. If not... then it's definately not the router!!

i can't remember if you use 2000 or XP or neither. but if you do, do you ever modify your 'services'?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Spaliznad

Can't get onto gamespy huh? Did you download the latest version, because I had to do that to see the servers.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

I'm going to try to do that patch that Chodder suggested... is that what you're saying, Spaliznad? If not, what do I need to do?

Josh... I have XP. What do you mean by "modify" my services?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Spaliznad

Chodder is talking about the v1.11 patch for MOH. Yes, you need that.

I'm talking about the update for gamespy. I had to get it since it wouldn't let me view the servers otherwise. It would just lock up and I've have to ctrl-alt-delete out of it.

You don't need gamespy to connect to Mr.F though.

Modify services? I think that's what I was talking about before, but I believe he means to do something that I didn't cover. Hmm....

She already has the 1.1 us patch. If you need an updated version of gamespy you can borrow my Spearhead/ Breacthrough games

I only have the two disks for Allied Assault and it works for me. I don't have any of the expansion packs.

KJ - Make sure your second disk is in the computer when you try to play

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Spaliznad

Whoa, I've been using the first and it works just fine......

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Larke2000

[EDIT]oops. nevermind about the services. that's already been covered by spaliznad.[/EDIT]

Reply To this Message

Posted by: chodder

Spaliznad - You use disk 1 to play Medal of Honor? That doesn't sound right... you have to keep the 2nd disk in to play. Disk 1 is just installation.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Chodder - you can use either disk!

Reply To this Message

Phew, thought something was messed up there for a second. KJ assures me that I'm not the only one once again.

I just tried opening Medal of Honor using disk one and got this message:

Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Spaliznad

Hmmm....you're just not special enough, chodder.

I'll play using the second disk from now on. I did get some weird glitches when I used the first (ie: invisible gun)

That happens to me sometimes too. I also get a minimized screen sometimes.

Yeah, I get a minimized screen when zonealarm pops up wanting me to approve some program.

....stupid....

Did you modify your services? That's the only thing that I can really think of........

Nope... haven't done anything. I guess that I just need to find someone here, that knows computers really well, and have them come take a look for me.

Or you could just borrow my bat. That usually takes care of things REAL quick.

the only other things i would try would be to try any other online games you have.

try and setup a game between your computer and Heidi's through your router.

take a screenshot of your 'running processes' and let us have a look-see. (hit ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager and then make sure the 'processes' tab is selected.) from this we will be able to tell which services are running. perhaps one of these services may stick out like a sore thumb.

Larke, could spyware have anything to do with it?

Also check for viri.

i certainly wouldn't rule it out. she's not using a software firewall to restrict program access. so if she's got some spyware tying up ports (not to mention bandwidth) her online games are trying to use...

good suggestion advance.
