A year ago, poor little Monica Lewinsky burst into tears in front of a room full of TV critics and complained that she was misunderstood. That she agreed to be interviewed for an HBO documentary because she wanted to set straight several misconceptions about herself.
"The main one — that I sought this celebrity by seducing the president and going to the White House with an agenda and then turning on him so that all of this could happen. So that I could enjoy it," she said. "So that I could then cause trouble for the country and then make millions and millions of dollars and then continue to perpetuate this celebrity and enjoy and make the most of it."
We were supposed to feel sorry for Lewinsky. In the wake of her scandalous behavior with President Bill Clinton, the poor dear lost her "private life." And, she assured us that she "really tried" to lead a normal life and retreat from the public view.
In a related story, Fox announced this week that Lewinsky would be the host of its new reality series "Mr. Personality." Apparently, it's all part of her plan to "normalize" her life.
Lewinsky told TV critics that the second big misconception about her is that she's "stupid." Perhaps not, but apparently she thinks the rest of us are.
"Mr. Personality" will be Fox's next attempt to re-create the success it had with "Joe Millionaire." The concept is that a "young, beautiful, single woman will court several eligible men who must rely strictly on their personalities to captivate her." They guys will be disguised to keep their "looks hidden."
In other words, it's "The Bachelorette" with masks.
Fox's release about Lewinsky is unintentionally hilarious. It tells us where she went to college; that she's a handbag designer; that she was raised in Los Angeles and resides in New York; and that she "is considering a future career in law."
(It didn't say which side of the law she's considering, however.)
What Fox failed to mention is that she was a White House intern who got involved with the president of the United States and prompted his impeachment. You know, the infamy that is the only reason she's hosting "Mr. Personality."
Lewinsky released a statement saying, "Since Fox is the network that has had the greatest success with this genre, I was very excited when they approached me to host the show. It sounds like good fun."
Notice she didn't say good, clean fun.
GET REAL: Lewinsky aside, there is good news on the so-called "reality show" front. Americans seem to be getting tired of them.
Oh, some of them — like "Survivor," "American Idol," "Fear Factor" and "The Bachelor" — are still big hits.
But networks that are already over-relying on the genre are already suffering. ABC's "I'm a Celebrity — Get Me Out of Here" bombed, as are "The Family," "All American Girl" and "Are You Hot?"
And Fox's "Married by America" is also failing.
Reality shows aren't going away anytime soon. But, hopefully, the glut won't last too much longer.
