| Years ago we located the grave of a young local Marine who was killed in Vietnam.
Although it was near the Military section, his grave did not have one of those white upright head stones of the type you see marching in formation at Arlington National Cemetary.
It was just a plain, flat stone with grass overgrowing the edges and threatening to hide his name.
He no longer had surviving family nearby, it was Memorial Day and the visiting Veteran's group had put flags on some graves -- but not his.
So ... some friends ( former Marines and their families ) and I now go every year to tend that grave and several others nearby that are in the same danger of being forgotten.
We tend, and bring flowers, flags (U.S.A. and Marine Corps ) and have even affixed miniature purple hearts and other medals to the some of the headstones. It's the least we can do. After that we go have a HUGE breakfast and enjoy the rest of the day ... with gratitude.
If all would give some in remembrance of those who gave all, none would be forgotten. | |
