If you didn't give these countries money they wouldn't let you build or keep the military bases in their countries so you can protect your investments around the world. So look at it this way - you're paying rent.
The solution is to get rid of gasoline/diesel powered cars and trucks, as well as thermal power generating stations. We have to come up with new technologies, because the world is going to run out of oil - sooner or later.....
To be able to develop these new technologies, we better start teaching our kids some math and physics. These sciences as well as chemistry, biology, geography, have to be mandatory for ALL primary and secondary school students.
Letting children become fat, sit behind the computer 24/7 and use drugs will lead us nowhere. It's easy to say "oh its ok". It's not easy to solve all the problems arising later.
This is way offtopic, but banning 'junk food' from schools wont help. Kids will start going to nearby malls and buy Big Macs. Inactivity, physical and mental, is much bigger issue than availability of junk food.

I was reading about a Japenese car company ( Honda I think) who are devolping cars that need no oil whatsoever. And in the UK trhe government is investing in wind and wave power rather than reinvestinf in oil and coal power stations. Slightly off topic I know but it was just abit of info regarding the points that MR J made.
