I've been thinking, what if there's something special about hedwig? She's a very very smart owl, and her coloring is rare. Any ideas?

She is quite wonderful. Do all the owls follow directions so well? I mean Pigwidgeon is not that special. I think Hedwig is a snowy owl, not a common one. I think it is wonderful that Hagrid bought her for Harry.

Hagrid bought her for Harry as a birthday present when they were shopping in Diagon Alley.

hehehe we know that Sherry, he's wondering where Hedwig came from... did Hagrid simply buy her from the owl store? Or had Hagrid prepared her earlier for Harry... is she special? Was she always meant to be Harry's pet?

Hmm.............

Thats it, pick on the old gal.

I think she is special and she could have been picked and planted by Dumbledore.

Yeah, in book 7 we'll discover a huge recording device hanging around her neck

"now why did we never notice that before?"

No not a recording device. I think that Hagrid being an animal lover, picked out the very best owl for Harry.

maybe he did pick out the best owl, but do we even know that hedwig is an owl, ok no that sounded weird, i mean what if she is mostly owl, but has some really smart other birds genes in her from way back in her ancestry. Maybe shes like 90% owl and 10% something else thats a really smart and wise animal.

I think that there is definitely something special about the animals witches and wizards keep, but what can you expect from a "wizarding" community. Normal animals themselves can be highly intelligent. Dogs, cats, and birds... add a bit of magic... wallah! :P

Some wizards and witches can speak to them. Well the next step is for them to understand us and therefore help us in ways.

Crookshanks is a great example, as the high intelligence of that cat has certainly spawned many a Animagus theory.

But anyhow. As for being planted by Dumbledore or anyone else? Not likely. Hedwig is a great bird and in my opinion probably has a bit of magic of her own, but I suspect that is all. Then again...anything coming from Hagrid...lol.

Boy I talk a lot. :P

I think it's interesting how Hedwig and Harry communicate with each other. She gets mad at him when he upsets her, she is affectionate when he's worried, she knows when he serious, and she has never failed him. She has a personality of her own. I consider her another character. She is definitely a special bird. I don't think that it's just "luck" that Hagrid bought Harry such a wonderful owl.

Maybe Harry inherited her/him from his parents, like a family airloom or something. Or maybe she was always meant to be his pet. I mean if she wasn't that special then the school might have some snowy white owls, along with their barn owls. Wouldn't they? But who knows it is J.K. Rowling we are talking about!

I think Hagrid just bought him the best owl there was. He wanted Harry to have a very special birthday present since he never got any.
