| Posted by: marilyns_hope | | I am a 31 year old mother that never understood Eminem or his music...not really. I would listen to a few of his songs and enjoy them. But I just watched his movie, and I always liked Eminem, but he put a whole new perspective on my outlook on Rap. Because he came from nothing. And he has never forgotten it. And to some of these out there that cant relate to it, you just need to go your own way and forget it. You will never understand and dont even try to. If you have never had a hard life you will never understand. I know the movie isnt based completely on his life... but I have an Idea now. I salute you Marshall Mathers... you made your dream come true. You tell em how it is...!!!!! Dont ever stop. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: elkabong2k | | yeah, neither eminem or ja is that cool... so however they diss each other is great, and congratualtions to ja for stepping up his usually weak rap game for 3 seconds on that dis track. um... about 8 mile, to the mother who started the post, it's BASED on his real life... not a biography so don't go thinking you saw the whole truth or that you know him and that he's like jesus or something. he's not. I'm just a little pissed that white folks didn't seem to give a damn about rap until eminem got into it and have immediatly called him the best rapper out right now... when they can't name 15 other rappers to compare him to... yeah... back to 8mile... it was ok, but it's kinda unrealistic to make him the only white man in detroit trying to rap (kid rock, cage, icp all started before the rabbit), and having to go up against the evil negros. We generally aren't as cruel and unaccepting as the movie (not written by black folks) made us seem, if dude had skills he would be respected, and not viciously beaten for no reason besides his skin. anyways, just had to inject a little bit of reality into the situation | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: beortnoth | | I didn't think 8 Mile portrayed "evil negroes"! His best friends were mostly black, especially Mekhi Pheifer's character (Future?) In the movie, he probably never would have had the guts to keep trying if it weren't for his friends urging him on. And I think I've read that that was like his real life - that most of his friends were black, and that he did get beat up or ridiculed for being white, and that people would often boo him off stage before he even opened his mouth, assuming that a white guy would be a lousy rapper.
I'm sure Eminem is popular partially because white people generally like white musicians, and black people like black musicians. Of course that's not always true, but I'm speaking generally! I guess people feel like they can identify with someone of their own race. Not that that's good or bad, but I think it's just the way it often is. It's almost like he's making it legitimate for white people to like rap. (Btw I'm a white female myself). I feel like people are staring at me in surprise when I pull up beside them in my car, blaring the rap station! Like they're thinking, "You sure don't LOOK like someone who likes rap!" It's almost like rap is a very exclusive club. What do you think? | | Reply To this Message
