| That clever Mr. Cargo posted this the other day,
"Following the Arab/Israeli war in 1973, Henry Kissinger declared that Oil would be at the heart of the USA's foreign policy. Let me explain.
Because the USA supported Israel in the 1973 war, the Arab oil-producing nations in OPEC decided to cease exporting oil to the USA for some time, which caused all sorts of problems in America (long queues at the petrol stations etc due to oil shortages). Kissinger saw the effects of the OPEC oil embargo, and stressed in 1975 that he would never let this happen to America again, and stated that the US would go to war if any oil-producing country held the USA to ransom.
Christopher Hitchens, a British pro-Bush commentator in the US has written a book called “The Trial Of Henry Kissinger”. The book outlines Kissinger’s criminal behaviour (helping to overthrow the democratically elected Allende government in Chile, Kissinger’s support for the Indonesian dictator, Suharto, whose military killed over 250,000 East Timorians, using US-sold weapons, 250,000 East Timorians whose only crime was that they desired independence from Indonesia). I won't list Kissinger's other crimes because they are not germane to your last post.
Whether you believe it or not, the US is attempting to win the hearts of as many countries as possible where oil reserves are to be found. The Baltic region is decidedly important to the US because it is close to the Caspian Basin, where there are huge oil reserves, and where the US and British are, at this juncture in time, building a huge pipeline in order to feed the oil all the way from Uzbekistan to the Turkish coast, circumventing Iran. Ideally the US would like to see the Iranian government overthrown so that a pro-American government would allow them to thread the oil pipeline through Iran, saving an enormous amount of money. An unstable Balkans would be a danger to Britain's and America's links with the Caspian Basin oil reserves. This was one of the reasons for attacking Kosovo, but not the only reason.
Iraq was important to the US, according to an Oxford Middle East professor, because both China and India are growing massively in economic terms, and are becoming more reliant on oil, and both China and Oil were brokering deals with Hussein for oil contracts. Now, according to this Oxford professor, if the US could somehow control Iraqi oil, it could limit the growth of both India and China’s economic expansion (China, it has been said, will, by 2038, overtake the US in terms of economic output). This prediction is a threat to the USA’s current position as world super power. In order to hold on to this position the US has to somehow control the flow of oil to China. And, as many of us know, Iraq has the second biggest oil reserves on the planet, which China and India would like to further tap into."
Interestingly brilliant.
