yes, merciless dictators were once young too...

Even if the inspectors were left there to look in the dirt with their magnifying glasses and blue hats, do you really think they would have came to a conclusivie summary with all questions answered?

How long would it have taken to realize we would never get anywhere with Saddam?

Can you imagine a Saddam Hussein being left in power until the year 2010?

Taking Saddam down was unavoidable. Maybe he knew this himself and therefore continued on with his non-compliant policies.

Lastly, do not ever think that it is the fault of the United States and/or the coalition of the willing, to have such disarray currently in Iraq. The fault lies soley on Saddam Hussein, the tryant, the Anointed One, Glorious Leader, Direct Descendant of the Prophet, President of Iraq, Chairman of it's Revolutionary Command Council, field marshal of it's armies, doctor of it's laws, and Great Uncle to all it's peoples.

I must give some credit to Mark Bowden of The Atlantic Online, for the extended list of Saddam titles. Thank you Mark.

Saddam used to be our friend when he was at his most vile. Look at who we're friends with now in the area - Uzbekistan, led by a human-rights abusing, torturing, tryant. How hard did we even try to change Saddam's brutal ways? We fell out cause of oil not because of human rights abuses. The sanctions probably killed more people than he did.

None of this help though because until Bush starts telling some truths and admits to the mistakes he's made in starting this war he's going to be fighting virtually alone. And you can face this fact or not, but even the mighty British empire couldn't crush Iraq in the 1920's and that was when there wasn't the ever present media lens flashing back the images to Britain daily.

I will admit that it was almost painful to watch Bush not come up with an answer to the mistake question he was asked....(Probably because he was overwhelmed with thought of (more) negative light it would have possibly cast on him if he answered)...even if morally he was obligated to answer, his image, the image of the president cannot be tarnished with self admissions of error. I would think there will be a time though, some time where he speaks in regret. Could be years though for that.

Good point H@ts.

Perhaps if our one-time friend, Hussein, had grown bananas instead of creating oil, do we think the US would have invaded Iraq? Not likely.

Hopefully when Hussein stands trial, he'll spill the beans on his seedy relationship with the US and Britain and the other countries who supported him for all those years when he was at his worst.

Yes, and all these countries will be smeared if all of this comes to light.
Sordid, I find it amazing that some people comment on the civil war starting in Iraq as "how come ...?" or "why such mistakes have been made (so-called "bad intelligence", ...) even though we in Europe have been attempting to warn about the stakes and dangers of this powder keg there.
Deposing Saddam - we should have done it years ago with the UN backing. It was still time to do it together with real justifications.

First, rather than inherit a failed (French) imperialism, we liberated the country from a deeply reviled tyrant…
