AND you thought Simon Cowell was cruel ... the ultimate spoof of Pop Idol is to be unveiled on US television.
It will shatter the dreams of America's would-be starlets who thought they were in for a taste of fame and fortune.
Dubbed Superstar USA, the WB network series will take the talent show format and give it a wicked twist by rejecting the contestants with real talent.
Instead, it will reward the misguided souls who are clueless and tuneless.
'These people believe they're the next pop superstar, even though they're horrible singers,' said the show's executive producer Mike Fleiss.
'It's not funny seeing bad singers doing karaoke. This is all about people who are clearly delusional and watching them butcher song after song.'
The first two episodes will feature footage from open auditions in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Miami and Minneapolis.
During the show, 12 wannabe superstars will get complete fashion makeover s and be treated to a glimpse of the celebrity life complete with fake fans.
The judges are forced to keep a straight face as they heap mounds of praise on the not-so-brilliant crooners and tell truly talented singers they're going home.
Participants aren't told the show is not a real competition but a hoax until the final episode, in which two finalists compete for the bogus title of Superstar USA.
After the winner is crowned, everyone is told the truth. And to ease the embarrassment, the winner gets $100,000 and a recording contract.
