LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A 5-year-old girl is in stable condition Wednesday, a day after she was discovered by highway workers near the scene of a car crash that killed her mother about 10 days ago, according to police and hospital officials.

Ruby Bustamante survived by drinking Gatorade and eating dried noodles found in the car, according to family members.

Police believe Norma Bustamante, 26, drove off a highway near Banning, California, about 70 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, plunging 400 feet over the guardrail to her death, according to Capt. Bob Clark, commander of the California Highway Patrol's station in Banning.

"It appears that the crash, the collision did occur 10 days ago," Clark said. "We're really not sure exactly how long, we're assuming it's been 10 days because of the amount of time that they've been missing."

"I couldn't imagine having to survive like that for 10 days without any help," Clark said. "It's amazing she was able to live that long."

Clark said police believe Ruby and her mother were reported missing from nearby Indio, California.

California transportation workers, repairing the guardrail on Freeway 60, "noticed movement approximately 150 feet down a steep embankment," according to a CHP report.

Rescuers, right, prepare to remove the body of the girl's mother on Tuesday.
The workers found Ruby, who "appeared to be uninjured, but was hungry and thirsty" near the site of the crash, the report said.

They also discovered the "very decomposed" body of the child's mother.

The girl is in stable condition at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

She was able to eat a hamburger and drink some apple juice, according to hospital sources.

Her great-grandfather, Bill Cooney, criticized the CHP and other authorities for not searching for Ruby and Norma Bustamante when they were reported missing on April 4, according to The Associated Press

10 days - That is pretty amazing taht she is still alive.

It is sometimes wierd the things kids can do, especially little kids. I remember a kid who was about 7 or 8 living by himself in England for like two weeks, including getting himself ready for school (he didn't miss a day) and making all his meals. And another one about a young girl who survived being locked in her house for a few days by drinking out of the toilet because she could not reach the sink taps.

What happens to that stamina and ability in adults? You hear of adults dropping dead after being left alone for a day or two. ?

I saw this on my local news last night! Banning is about 30 minutes away from me, you have to drive by it on I-10 to get to L.A. or San Diego. Trip out. I've driven that freeway a thousand times. They're from Indio too, that's about 30 minutes the other way.

A lot of wacky stories seem to come out of the Coachella Valley, it seems. Remember that crazy teacher who wanted to be kicked in the junk?

That is where it is? I have been out that way before. I had no idea it was out that way.

Remember how much energy you had as a kid? Full of life. Maybe adults are just too bitter and cynical and just say "screw it."

I was full of enthusiasm and energy. Not to mention innocent (and sometimes not so innocent) wit.

I feel really old now.

Turns out they weren't on the 1-10, rather the I-60, just off the 10. Man, everyone in the Valley calls this stretch of the 60 where this lady wrecked 'The Badlands.' It's a very small four-lane road weaving left and right, up and down through the mountains at 70 MPH. But the road is so small, like a two lane that had both lanes spilt. Only a narrow cement barricade separates the two. There are more paint marks on that damn thing than a Nascar track. The guardrails are spaced sporadically and really flimsy. Oh, and there are 5 or 6 spots for big rig's to turn off in case their brakes fail. This road sucks, I hate driving it at night. There are several spots where you could drive off to your death.

And if you're going to the LA area from Palm Springs, the 60 cuts like 20 minutes or more off your trip (anyone is So Cal knows the 10 is freakin' nuts). Back in the day it was just a two lane highway with no barricade.

They showed video of this little kid leaving the hospital, she's going to be messed up for a while. Sucks.
