I am apalled the John S and JPL ranked worse than Jasmine. Dont get me wrong, Both have awesome personalities, both can moderately sing. but not to the quality, vocally, versility that Jasmine and begrudgingly Diana can.

I was thrilled with the top 3 choices..

And I must say that if Jasmine had been healthy enuff to sing last night like she did tonight... she definitely would NOT have been in the bottom 3.

Is AI going to do the 3 groups all the time... cool concept, I like it.

Also... loved the AI skit going back to the 70's with the hair, clothes... what a riot!!

They did it differently.

3 Groups

Highest Votes

Second Highest Votes

Bottom 3 .....

They were grouped like this:

*Group A

Jasmine
Diana
Camile

*Group B

John S
JPL
Fantasia

*Group C

Jenn
Latoya
George

They didn't tell us which group was highest or second highest, only that Group A was the Bottom 3.

Very interesting this way.

Which do YOU think was highest Group B or C

I'm really disappointed that she's gone but i guess from all the reviews it seems as though she just didnt pick up the pace quick enough.

I dont think that losing in this competition will harm her though because i think that if she's guided correctly and gets the chance to sing songs in her style then she could have a very good future. I am sure she will get signed up - her voice is soo much like Lauren Hill's .. she's just a little raw at this stage. I am in no doubt that if she did release an album that i would get it and i dont think i would be in the complete minority.

I am surprised that Jasmine was in the bottom 2 but i guess that could have been cos of the split in voters between the 2 girls. John S not being down there yet again proves my theory that his voters are waiting for him to sing in Big Band week ... in which case it looks like Diana could be in trouble next week!

ahhh welll now i'm really gutted.... i'll have to think who to support next...

She needs a little more work and a little more experience. I think a year or so working with a vocal coach should do her well.

i think the highest votes goes to group B. they have the craziest fans! as much as i love John Stevens, i think its mad! but i'm so glad he's safe and i'm so glad i am not living in the states otherwise, he'll be the next American Idol.

Hi Sand67 ... No ...

Group A was
Jasmine, Diana, and Camile. They were the BOTTOM 3

Group B was
John S, JPL, and Fantasia

Group C was
Jenn, Latoya and George

Ryan NEVER said they were the Top Group ... In fact what he said was " I can only say, Group C ... you are safe."

I think it's a tough call as to who got the most votes, although it's possible it was Group C as Jenn and Latoya were Bottom 3 last week so maybe their fans amped up the votes ... but then again, Group B has strong fan bases ... so who knows.

Sorry KJ but i'm going to have to disagree with on you that one. I think that Camille has a lot of talent and will do well in the RnB/HipHop genre of music with the right guidance. Her voice is not just a normal voice or not just a loud one it has a tone which is natural and expressive and captures people....

She needs to be nurtured and trained a little but she definitely has the talent to base it from and succeed in the industry.

Out of curiosity - who do you think in the competition that is left does have talent?

I've posted about this before but maybe the thread is gone - the media has created this scenario where John, Jon Peter and Camile should have been in the bottom three. I saw the announcers on Fox news discussing it the morning after Amy was voted off. They all just acted like it was common knowledge that John, Jon Peter and Camile were the worst and that it was a shocking mistake, they were aghast, blah blah blah.

So that immediately makes fans of John, JPL and Camile comrades in arms. The whole world is against these three because they thought Amy, Latoya and Jennifer were "better". And everyone's saying "I don't understand how people can vote for these people who aren't any good. etc..etc...droning on indignantly.....etc.." Frankly, it gets old ppl.

The whole thing is so distasteful to me. Maybe a lot of people have short memories but I remember each audition. I remember when these kids were all equally unknown. I saw the public fall in love with each of them including JPL, Camile and John. Sure I think Amy and Jennifer and Latoya are talented, I feel that way about all 12 of them and some of the ones that were not even in the final 32. I still miss Erskine Walcott I wish we had Suzy Vulaca. But we're talking about choosing from the twelve.

I 'd like a 12 way tie, frankly, but 4 of them are already gone and that's not the way the show is structured.

But I know that it is pretty clear from reading (and I do read too much) what JPL's, John's and Camile's fans have in common. They respect the divas but they aren't moved by them. They don't want to listen to them more than once. They were moved, and charmed, by something special in these three little underdogs. And they aren't going to stop liking them just because Fox news tells them to.

When I watched the night Amy was let go, it was not a surprise. (i know you have a thing or two for Amy & please I'm not bashing or criticizing her) It was clear from her being in almost everybody's bottom three for weeks. I mean you must have seen the constant "list your faves in order" and her name was rarely near the top. Everyone liked and respected Amy but she was not the one getting all the votes. As for Jennifer and Latoya they had their fans but they were clearly just not voting.

Why did the infamous 3 get more votes? Clearly their fans wanted them to stay in. What does it mean being a fan anyway? They aren't related to us - there's nothing in it for us - until this season started they were unknown to us. But somewhere along the line, whether at the audition or the day they made the finals, somewhere we realized we liked them best, believed they should win, and decided to like them "better" than the ones the judges were currently praising more.

At some point, all 3 of them had outstanding reviews from the judges. So how can people say they are talentless? The fact is their natural talent was not a one shot deal, or a fluke. It was there and is still there. If anything, the format of the show makes it hard for them to blossom, but that's another whole topic. I understand the argument that the winner has to be comfortable with pressure, able to shine in every performance, have a great charisma and stage presence, be able to sing every genre BLAH BLAH BLAH. But please, when you ARE the American Idol, no one tells you that you have to record so many motown tracks, so many disco tracks, etc. You record the material that you are best at.

So if American Idol is the people's choice, what the heck is everyone so shocked about when people choose someone from the twelve and vote for them?

Ummm regarding the health issue... yes.... last night they specifically pointed out that JASMINE and DIANA had tonsilitis, laryngitis.... and made a joke regarding multi itis" ... So YES there was mention of Jazz being ill....

Either way,, the results are what they are... im happy.

John Stevens has won my heart and my vote. He has a great voice but like people have said, they need to do BIG BANDS...or some kind of older music that his deep sexy voice could pull off...I mean then he would be staying because he is awesome but I don't care...I am still going to vote for him because one I love his red hair and he does have a great voice the show just needs to let that show.....
Now onto Jon Peter Lewis....he is my 2nd favorite, right behind John Stevens....he did well but when they put him and John Stevens in the same group...my heart dropped because I didn't want them pinned head to head.
But again this week, we have.... in Simons face and showed that sometimes.....he don't know best....

GO JOHN STEVENS

I disagree with the Big Band thing, I think we are seeing John branch out to the other types of music and I think it's cool that we are seeing the transformation live on national TV.

Yeah, Ron. We have been trying to figure out for a long time if the order that they deem them "safe" is from the top down ... sometimes it would seem to make sense ... but they never DO say it ... so we never really know for certain.

Also even though they didn't out and out say it, it's clear that both Jasmine and Diana were sick last night.

You think so ? Diana looked ill ... bloated or something, but for some reason to me Jasmine looked and sounded pretty good on Tuesday ... and I'm the only one.

My bad Sand67 ... I missed the first half of the Wednesday show so I didn't know they said that and I was referring to what was said on Tuesday by Paula regarding Diana. Sorry for confusion.

They have these younger kids ( Jasmine, Diana, John S and Camile ) doing schoolwork for I think 3 hours a day plus the VERY rigorous schedule. No wonder they get sick.

Anyway, it's weird ... but I didn't think Jasmine sounded that bad on Tuesday.

Look how I ranked the Tuesday performances.

Jenn
Jasmine
George

JPL
Fantasia
John S

Latoya
Diana
Camile

So except for Latoya/Jasmine flip ... I got the groups right

Again ... sorry for the confusion and thanks for filling me in ... and BTW ... welcome to InReview

Next week's theme may work for him Ron ... see Theme Nights thread.

As for the Big Band ... I don't want him to get voted off before he has a chance to really shine *wringing hands*

I totally agree with you about the transformation though. Maybe John is learning through this process to adapt his own style to make it more "today". I hope so because I think he has a really good voice ... just not practiced in the other genres.

Really great analysis, really great post, skylar !

Even Simon said he didn't "get it" -- but that people are entitled to vote for the one(s) they like best.

By the way ... you said:

See ? I DO have Easter Eggs in my ears !

Considering how things shook down, I think it's interesting that

Diana sang "I'm Still Standing"

Jasmine sang "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"

and

Camile sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road "

in fact ALL of the song titles were interesting in a way.

purplefish posted another excellent recap of the 4/7 show ... just pasting here in case you missed it.

purplefish said this in post #36 :
First of all, i almost missed the show. Uggh! i thought its coming on at 8:30pm, good thing my husband reminded me

Alright, this is our long await show. Give us the "surprise" already!!! JPL is wearing an awesome TREAHUN SURETER jacket. It's so cool! That's gonna stay an inside joke with those of us who DID see the show. You gotta have your priorities, people! Camille gives a quick shout-out to her dad in Japan since today is his birthday. Shortly after, Ryan lets Gladys Knight plug the new AI finalists' SOUL HITS cd which will be in stores soon. We see a clip of Matt discussing last years American Idol greats and says he's happy to be one of them. He's gotta start getting used to past tense I think . They also point out Julia DeMato from last season and give details on her new single.

We get our big Elton John medley which consists of the girls singing "Benny & The Jets", the guys giving an awesome "Daniel" and a way toooo extended "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." They easily could have added another couple songs, but what we get is good anyway. One of the small groups while they are singing is Jasmine, JPL and Camille. It's so funny to see that JPL is easily the shortest one of the three.

We see a quick clip of the Nickelodeon Kid's choice awards, before Tamyra Gray from Season One makes a special guest appearance. She looks a lot like Beyonce tonight and sings a song she wrote called "Raindrops Will Fall." She really is fantastic. The best of the returning contestants if you ask me. She couldn't have been any better. Latoya's fashion consultant from last night must have also helped Tamyra out because she has the same tasty sherbert colors on. She gives a really geeky laugh though after her song is over and Ryan anctually uses the word "parlay." I look twice to make sure he's blonde. Yup.

Our Ford video this week sucks again. They are singing "Love Machine" and all dressed in seventies punk gear. They think that is joke enough and just make cars magically appear during the video. Um...the outfits are funny, but that's about it.

Okay!! Here's the big twist!! All nine have to walk down from the couch and form three groups. One is the highest vote-getters. One group is the bottom three, and the remaing three fill out the middle. That sure is a new method, but hardly a "twist."

Well here they are... Jasmine- A. Jennifer- C. Diana- A. Johhny- B. Latoya- C. JPL- B. Camille- A. Fantasia, go join the Jo(h)ns in B. and George, you're in C.

So we have three groups with no word of which is which.

A- Jasmine, Diana, Camille

B- Johnny, JPL, Fantasia

C- Jennifer, LaToya, George

But which is which? Well, Group C, go sit. Group A, stay standing because B is safe.

So- Bottom 3- Jasmine and Camille watch as Diana gets to go sit back down. Both Hawaiians are left clutching each other as one must head home, but first they each get to sing again. Camille is up first but she doesn't sing what she sang last night. She changes the words to tell the rest of the Top9 that she loves them. She sings she's going back to the islands of Maui, and she does better than she did last night. Jasmine gets her chance and sings worse than she did last night. But Jasmine is the safe one tonight. They share a long embrace, but Camille fiinally gets to thanks her fans and say her farewells. So long Camille and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. We'll see you on the tour!!!

Thanks again, purplefish !

Quick note ... on Seacrest's show today ... Ryan said FOUR (4) Contestants have tonsillitis.

Paula (on the phone) also says John S & JPL's performances have been somewhat inferior BUT said no matter what your opinion, she gives kudos to John S who she says has been "painfully shy" for "breaking out of the mold".

She says "it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to see who has been exceptional but the girls just love, love, love the Johns."

Camile is Seacrest's guest. Each of the boots is a guest on ONAir on the Thursday after their Wednesday boot.

Camile says Wednesday was kind f sad but they have a "kiss off" dinner every Wednesday night.

Camile says they were all very good friends. She was roomy's with Amy, Latoya and Fantasia and they are very close. Fantasia and Latoya helped her pack after the kiss-off dinner.

If you were wondering, Jasmine & Camile's conversation during the extra long hug consisted of "make Hawaii proud" stuff.

They all work 8-12 hour days, rehearsing, photo shoots etc. Some days they are up and out at 8AM and don't get home until 8PM.

She's grateful for the experience, thinks Paula is awesome and will follow her career advice.

It was time for Camille to go home. She picked a song that was too low for her to hit all the notes.

I found it interesting that on Wednesday, they mentioned that Jasmine was sick, not on Tuesday like they did with Diana.

I think that John Stevens would do much better in the competition if he picked better songs. OH, and I love how JPL sounded on Daniel.

I was so sad that camile was voted off. I voted for her 2 hrs straight after the show, but it just wasn't enough. Though I really hope she follows paula's advice and establishes a singing career, because she is a real talented singer, I just thought, the elton john and motown songs aren't her style of songs. She's got more of that hip-hop-r&b jive goin down. As for now, i'm not sure who to root for....maybe jasmine, diana, goerge or latoya. But I just really hope I will hear camile sing again.

I was watching Ryan Seacrest when Camlie was on there on Thursday and they were talking about how 2 other people in the house are now since with what Diana and Jasmine had...so now they are 4...and I don't know who though because he didn't say but I hope it's not John Stevens....I mean that would suck....I really think this week, he could have it...I think this would be his night to shine andI would hate to see that messed up because he got sick from one of the girls...more then likly though...it's going to be the other girls that share the room with them....you know....
I also think I am the only person in GA not going for Diana...but the fact be told...I just don't like her. She goes to school about 10 min away from me...and when our school plays her school in anything she is always there singing ...so I am kinda tried of hearing her and that is why I am not going for her but for someone with real....i'm going for John Stevens because he is different, hot, and got a great voice.........

Im not sad about Camille leaving...she was one of the worst of the bunch, and I agreee with KJ...her attitude was horrible on that night...

I think Camille should have flowered over the few weeks, but she never did...she just stayed in her shell....I think that was her downfall (along with the fact that she didnt open up her voice either). You cant be shy that way...its a nice quality but not in the entertainment field.

I still think John Stevens has not proven himself at all....to think that people are voting for him makes me laugh....I cant believe that people honestly think he is capable of singing anything outside of old music. He has proven that he cant do it...not now anyways.

he's young....he needs training first...maybe then he can show what he has...but he needs to pick his songs wisely and he cant even do that on his own..he has already proven that also.

I dont understand the votes for this guy....he hasnt sung in key for weeks....I agreed with Randy...people are voting on personality and NOT on singing....its a singing competition..do people forget that?

not to borrow too much from dear ol simon, but AMERICAN IDOL is a singing competition AS MUCH AS personality. whatever simon says, ppl dont forget. not easily.

I seriously apologize if I don't see it your way or agree with your humble opinion but with all seriousness, i think John Stevens CAN sing, he just doesn't sound POP, doesn't dance POP, doesn't speak POP and that, i think, bugs the hell out of individuals like you.

ahhhhhrgh im so sad to see camile gone. i guess when i think about it, picturing her as a pop star doesnt seem to be the right fit. shes definatly more of a hip-hop or r&b singer. i know that she'll hve some kind of future for her and i know that when she makes an album ill definatly buy it cause shes an awesome singer and and she made hawaii proud.

I just have to say IT'S ABOUT TIME! Thank god that someone is booted that doesn't have talent. And Camille's face was horrible to look at tonight. It's like, "Miss Attitude." Glad that she's gone.

haha you know nothing man...."miss attitude"? ok well... i didnt know that the most quiet and shy person on the whole show could be labeled "miss attitude" camile had talent but not for the whole pop genre. its obvious to see that shes got a more hip-hip and r&b flavor to her. dude your seriuosly messed up to not see that. your probably rooting for someone crappy like jon stevens...the guy, like camile, can sing but definatly, definatly NOT pop music.

I think that Camlie should of been cut....it was her time to go...she should of gone way back when she up against Matt. She was awesome before the big shows but then her nerves got the best of her and she messed up........My mom and I started to cry a little when she was called out to leave because by now....you kinda like hearing all of them and it's hard to watch them cry....and then watch that video.....
I think John Stevens gets votes because he is different and not to many 16 year olds has that voice and can do stuff like that....if he makes it to the top 5, he will get a record deal from someone because he can sing....he's awesome.....

LET THE BEST PERSON WIN....GO JS

Sorry Skylar...as much as you think you can speak for individuals like me...it doesnt work.

What bugs the hell out of me is listening to the guy sing off key every week, and then individuals like yourself cant hear that and still think he is vote worthy.....

If we have to vote on singing and personality...John S. still doesnt hold a candle to half of the people left on that show.

So, instead of thinking that you know how I (or others) feel and think, I think you should just accept the fact that some people dont think the guy is talented enough to be an American idol this season.

mystic ... I put the Theme for next week in the Theme Nights thread here ... see Post #77 dated 4/6

http://www.inreview.com/showthread....15&pagenumber=6

I always put it there so I can find it. So many threads ... so little time.

The funniest thing is see Post #78 ... I said the very same thing you did about "My Heart Will Go On" ( Titanic).

You'll also find some suggestions there for some of your "favorites" to sing.
You just keep your apples away from John.

I agree with your post.

I can't understand why John S. is still there. Because of the manipulation of the votes, my family and I have stopped watching.

I'll just wait for the end show and hope that J.S. has been eliminated by then.

We're not sure of any "vote manipulation". Do you have something that confirms that ? Have they been officially accused of fraud or something ?

Seriously, we KNOW that they ( the producers ) try to orchestrate the outcomes via judges comments, the musical genres, performance order, etc. ... and by that measure ... it would seem they are trying to orchestrate John Stevens OUT ... wouldn't you say ? I'm just saying ... Soul, Motown etc., and John has NEVER gotten the first or last performance slot.

I guess I could say the same thing. Fantasia, LaToya, Diana almost always have a prime spot in the performance order and the genres have been more suitable to their styles than John Stevens'.

Poor John Stevens ... a nice 16 year old kid with a very good voice ... has become the scapegoat for everyone's frustration with this season ... in general and I think it's awful.

I DO like your "judges" attachment though.

Keep my apples away from John, huh? Well...okay, Ill try...but I cant promise anything!

I always thought "pop music" was music that is popular or becomes popular.

I just found this definition ... Is THIS what we're searching for in the AI contestants ?

pop music, pop music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.

popular music, popular music genre -- any genre of music having wide appeal but usually only for a short time.

==================

So what are we looking for ? A lukewarm flash in the pan ?

PS: Reminder ... everybody said Clay Aiken didn't sing/sound "pop" too, that he was Too Broadway, too this too that ... but his CD's sell like wildfire and the Kelly/Clay concerts are sold out !

So what's Pop(ular) ?

The pop music I have always referred to is the definition you found. When I talk about pop...I talk about the music that is what you described "the bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll"

I was always under the assumption thats what AI wanted because they have age limits....if they wanted to appeal to an older crowd...wouldnt they accept older contestants who know and like that type of music? (I may not have explained that well here...but I think I made more sense below).

Yes, they said Clay was too broadway, and yes, we disagreed....people thought he could be a great pop star and he has proven himself to be just that....

but since they were talking that they thought he was "too broadway" that should have let people know then that they were looking for the definition you found and not what is popular...because that definition is too broad.

Its like having punk music, alternative, country, pop, hip-hop, etc...these are types of music (but yet all popular to the people that like them).

So thats what "pop" is to me. popular is another term altogether IMO.
