Looks like you wanna sort everything out.

My idea? US went to war for the sake of stabilizing a region, which threatens USA's interests, as well as bringing an oil-rich nation to the global market, - these, i believe, are the main reasons behind this war. This is going to be achieved thru political and social liberty, education for every1, free market, - institutions we've been developing for centuries. Also US had to show off it's power, bombing the hell out of Taliban and Saddam's army.

I think i outlined my position clearly. Pro or anti? Guess.

I think that if this is STEP ONE that you need to go back and highlight some of the events and facts pre war. What prompted the US to even want to do such a thing.

Great idea Ron Ackerman.

What I meant by step one was to gather the main ideas. If anyone else wants to provide an UNBIASED post on what led up to the War in Iraq Feel Free. It would be an introduction to the Ultimate Guide.

PRO WAR
The US went to Iraq to democratize the region.

ANTI WAR
US shunned the international community to go to war

Reply To this Message

Posted by: JY_French

ANTI WAR

The US went on war without waiting for the inspections to be completed.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: JY_French

ANTI WAR

The US went to Iraq on false premises: the "tons of WMDs" whose existence could be proved with "clear and convincing evidence" and posed "an imminent threat" were a bogus claim.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Dekka00

PRO WAR
Iraq was a threat to its neighbors

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Advance

Not My Opinion:

ANTI WAR
The US went to war for oil.

ANTI WAR

The war in Iraq is counterproductive in the global war on terror.

Violence goes sky high, terrorists gather there and the country is on the verge of a civil war.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: JY_French

ANTI WAR

The US bribed or berated some of its allies during the process of the building of its so-called "coalition of the willing"

Reply To this Message

PRO WAR

The world is better off one of its most brutal tyrant - Saddam Hussein.

(But the side-effects undermine this good point ...)

PRO WAR: Thanks to the U.S., Iraq now wields NO WMD and thanks to the U.S. it never WILL.

PRO WAR: The U.S. gave Saddam over a decade to comply with international law—we should have invaded sooner.

PRO WAR: Res. 1441 was signed unanimously. Res. 1441 DID authorize force and anyone claiming that it did not, is peeing on your leg and telling you that it's raining.

PRO WAR: According to international law, the U.S. is not required to obtain neither French, German nor Russian permission to go to war to hold a rogue state accountable for repeated violations—especially since said rogue state held "sweetheart" deals with France, Germany and Russia.

PRO WAR: According to international law, the U.S. is not required to obtain neither French, German nor Russian permission to go to war to hold a rogue state accountable for murdering millions of people.

PRO WAR: The U.S. is a sovereign nation. The U.S. is not required to obtain neither French, German nor Russian permission to go to war. PERIOD.

PRO WAR: The U.S. did NOT go to war under false pretenses. The FACT that Saddam possessed WMD was acknowledged by every U.N. nation and its mother. Saddam refused to provide evidence of any destruction of WMD as REQUIRED. Saddam paid in full for his error.

PRO WAR: Saddam will never again procreate. Saddam's sons will not procreate.

PRO WAR: I love to piss off pathetic, anti-war-peace-at-all-costs types.

Anti War

US went to war to

1. Gain another oil rich ally in the Mid East
2. Make money from lucrative contracts

It was about the most obvious and compelling observation. All else is secondary.

as Iraqi
pro war: we get rid of Saddam
the price: our oil

anti war: Iraq became a ground for every creep to settel his problems with the west

anti war: the complete destruction of what was remained of the infra structure

Pro War: The countries around the world that support terrorism see that the United States is not afraid to take the war to them, on their soil.

Reply To this Message

Pro War:

Saddam is out of business

Anti War:

There is no guarentee that war will not emanate on our soil because of our lack of focus on real global threat and their efforts by exhausting resources where they are least needed.

PRO WAR

Any nation in Limbo now has to "wake up" to terrorism as the U.S. did on 9/11/2001, thus seperating the doers form the talkers. Less uncertainty in a matter like this is a good thing.

ANTI WAR

It's difficult for out troops to distinguish between an Iraqi Civilian and a suicide bomber--until it's too late. Losing American lives.

Wow, you guys have done AMAZING!

I am compiling what we have so far. Here is my idea:

We have certain topics

For example. Oil.

It would look like this.

OIL

One arguement, up to 300 words, of how the US went to war for oil.

One arguement, up to 300 words, of how the US went to war for oil.

One Rebuttal to the 2nd statement

One Rebuttal to the 1st statement

-----

Do we even need the rebuttals?

I think you could just group statements opposing each other by categories like you described above, so that we can look at the difference between the sides' argumentation.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MrJukoVette

That would raise lots of healthy debate, don't you mind gentlemen?

ANTI WAR 1 : you do not fight terrorism by a conventional war.

ANTI WAR 2 : no need of a war to get rid of Saddam. The US proved in the past that with money one can get rid of any dictactor of the world. It is then just a question of will.

PRO WAR : world is better without Saddam (but see above)

ANTI WAR 3 : will it be safer ??

Human life is equally important, regardless of nationality, sex, age, etc. It's sad that we lose hundreds for the sake of saving hundreds of thousands - but we have to.

Pro war: enforcing UN resolutions, giving the word of the UNSC more power.

PRO WAR: 5.5 million Iraqi children enrolled in school.
PRO WAR: Girls outnumber boys.
PRO WAR: Exam week attendance at 97%.

5.5 million children not affected with islamic radicalist propaganda. Sounds fine to me.

ANTI-WAR

The majority populace didn't/doesn't want us there. It is now considered an occupation and they are warring against us and coalition nations. (Note 12-13 Marines Killed Today in Ramadi. Multiply by number of days until end of June, add all humans already lost.)

ANTI-WAR

War is reportedly in response to and to prevent terror but terrorists respond to war with more terror. No lessening of terror or terror threats, but increases instead.

anti-war

Ron, before the invasion started I think the anti-war marches were about the biggest worldwide protests the world has ever seen.

History told us that the insurgency would happen. From the Indepedant newspaper yesterday: it took the British 3 years to fall out with both the Shiites and the Sunnis. It's taken just 1 year for Bush to do so.

pro-war
I've heard many Iraqis including the famous blogger Salom Pax say it is so far worth it

PRO WAR: A majority of Europeans believe that Bush is as bad or worse than someone like Hitler. That is NOT going to affect the way America conducts itself.

PRO WAR FACT: It matters not a lick what protesters have said/will say or have done/will do. The invasion has taken place. The occupation is under way. And the coalition will be present in Iraq for many years—as long as is necessary.

PRO WAR: 1960's

Many succomb to the magic bullet theory when Kennedy was killed because of his position on the war.

PRO WAR: 2000

Many succumb to the "tons of WMD" theory when UN refutted US claims.
