Guys and Gals,

Camile is good. She has a really nice voice and good looks. Yes, she sang a terrible song, but the judges made it clear to her and now I think she understands.

Imo, all the other contestants have had an audience to sing for all their lives. Camile just went out on a limb and auditioned for the show. The fact that she cries every chance she gets tells me something. She is so new! But, she is so good. She sounds like Christina Augluira(sp?) Even if she doesn't win the whole gig, somebody will spend a lot of time and money to tap the well. She has "IT".

Will only get better.

Go Camile!

i definetly agree agree with you that she is a great singa but i just dont think that she has the potential of another christina.christina has more of a tone and powa to her voice than camile does.but its probably only cuz she waz in the mickey mouse club sense she was about 8 or younga years old.but i also wish camille luck cuz she may not have as much tone as christina but shes definetly got da willingness to make it all the way and succeed to a level that is pretty hard to reach.and i also have one comment to everyone that reads this,TO ALL YALL HATAS THAT THINK THAT GAY CLAY SHOULD HAVE ONE THEN U NEED TO THINK IT RETHROUGH AND HAVE A TALK WIT YOURSELF CUZ RUBEN JUST GOT IT LIK IT WAS GOIN OUT OF STYLE.

Last season is over. Clay is not gay and who would care if he was. This board is not filled with haters. InReview is a very friendly board without all the flaming that others allow. This message brought to you by your local moderator.

camile is definitely one of the sincerest contestants on american idol, i mean when she sings, she radiates this really powerful vibe that gives the song she sings an even deeper meaning. GO CAMILE!!!!!! just a question you guys: does she know how to speak tagalog or any filipino dialect? YOU ROCK CAMILE!!!!!! you were the person who came to the auditions (in hawaii) with the fewest people to support you, and the voice!! oh my god!!! she go' be the next lauryn hill!!! aiight!!!

Hi Annie! Yes. Camille is a Filipino like me too . I am not sure if she is half filipino / half american. She was born in the Philippines but immigrated at a young age with her family in Hawaii. She is 18 years old. She is not only very talented but also very pretty. The judges said that she has a great potential and over 20 million viewers registered their votes for her. She has a chance to capture the title.

About Camile:

A website created in her honor states that she is 50% Filipino, 25% Spanish, and 25% Irish. However, anyone who knows her birth parents knows that neither have Irish blood--regardless of what is currently published in websites and newspapers. Camile’s mom and biological father are both immigrants from the Philippines.

About Jasmine:

A website created in her honor states her ethnic mix to be Filipino/Spanish/Chinese.

================

I have been around many Filipino-American (Filipinos who are American citizens) communities both in Hawaii and California, and have made this observation: There is a likely tendency for some Filipinos to spice up their ethnic mix by adding unnecessary ethnicities or unnecessary breakdowns to their racial make-up. For instance, there was this one guy who happened to have a thick Filipino accent, but yet claimed to be of Russian descent. His last name “Lauchengco,” he claimed, was Russian. Yeah, right. “Lauchengco” is a common Chinese-Filipino last name. Another example is how some in Hawaii who have the Filipino last name “Quijano” have gone as far as changing its spelling to “Kihano,” in order to have it appear Hawaiian.

Filipinos from the Philippines are already very likely to have an ethnic mix of Filipino, Spanish, and Chinese. Spanish blood comes from more than 300 years of Spanish rule and Chinese blood comes from the steady influx of Chinese immigration to the Philippines. Therefore, I find it unnecessary for some Filipinos to have to break down their ethnic make-up. One would have to go deep into the mountain provinces of the Philippines in order to find truly indigenous 100% Filipinos.

Back to Camile, I am not saying that she is the one claiming to be part Irish. All I said was that “a website created in her honor states…”

Before the flaming begins, let me say that the number of Filipinos who have true ethnic pride far outweigh those who like to modify their racial make-up. In no way am I making a broad generalization. What I have indicated as observations are exactly that--observations. I am certain that I am not the only one who has these thoughts. One can only wonder why there are Filipinos who like to shy away from just saying that they are just “Filipinos.” Perhaps it is the desire to be more part of the “mainstream.” Or maybe, to put it bluntly, they are ashamed to state only “Filipino” as their ethnic background.

Hi ... JustAdmitIt Welcome to INReview and the forum.

Thank you for a most informative post.

I can't answer the questions posed in your last paragraph.

I can fully understand the Filipino community's pride in and support of both Camile & Jasmine.

What I hope is that bloodline and website declarations do not amount to the questioning of either girl's pride in her heritage. That would be an injustice to these two lovely and talented singers.

Since tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day ... maybe to play it safe we could let all 12 be a little bit Irish ... and perhaps on Thursday, accept them all as talented Americans ?

i am so glad that there are two asians in the top two..
filipina pa rin! But between the two of them.. id have to say Camille.. even tho she didnt do too well, id blame it on nervousness.. she definately has that 'IT' that you guys had said
my parents are a psyched about there being filipinas in the competition and that we should vote for them.. i think its showing a bit of favoritism there.. maybe bcuz were filipinos, too.

ah well, GO CAMILLE!

btw.. HAWAII is such a beautiful place! go visit it

Maui's Camile Velasco hits 'Idol' stage tonight
By MELISSA TANJI, Staff Writer

KAHULUI - Haiku resident Camile Velasco begins another phase of competition tonight in her quest to become the next "American Idol."

Velasco, 18, is among 12 finalists on the popular reality television series with performances starting at 7 p.m. today on Fox Channel 2.

Tonight's show is the first of a series of weekly competitions that will seek to eliminate contestants until only one claims the crown of "American Idol." TV viewers participate by submitting votes for their favorite performers.

Fox declined The Maui News' requests for an interview with Velasco last week, saying contestants were not available for interviews.

But Velasco's father, James West, said last week that Velasco was already in Hollywood and was busy recording an Aretha Franklin song for the American Idol compact disk.

West said Velasco and the other contestants didn't know what they would be singing tonight until a few days beforehand.

But he hopes Maui residents will be ready today to vote for their own Maui girl.

Votes are submitted by calling a number provided on the show or by sending text messages on cellular phones. Results are revealed on the following night's show, with those with the least votes getting the boot.

Tonight, AT&T will provide phones for people to text message their votes at the Kahului International House of Pancakes restaurant. Velasco's parents James and Rennie West own the restaurant where Velasco spent years waiting on customers.

Among the dozen contestants, Velasco is joined by fellow Hawaii resident, Jasmine Trias, 17, of Mililani, Oahu.

"I think it's an honor for Hawaii to be a small state and have two singers that are really good. I think part of what it does is showcase the different talent," West said.

He said he has heard "a lot of different versions" on how to vote or root for Velasco and Trias, including someone saying a husband will vote for one and a wife will vote for the other.

But "it obviously is going to split the Hawaii vote," he said.

While the Hawaii vote is special and important, what really carried the girls to the finals was the Mainland vote, he said. There are not enough votes in Hawaii to push the girls over the top, he added.

West said the two girls have their own individual styles, characterizing Trias' singing as "more of a belt-it-out singer, in the Mariah Carey mode."

While Velasco is "more smoky, silky, type of singer," he said. "All the judges have compared her to Lauryn Hill and Beyonce."

Coincidentally, Velasco has said her favorite female pop artist is Beyonce and her favorite album is by Lauryn Hill.

West said both Hawaii girls are talented.

"It isn't that one's better than the other; it's just a difference. They are both very good," he said. "If you had a choice, Mariah Carey or Beyonce, which one would you choose? They are both very good. They are both very attractive. They have different styles. That's the way Jasmine and Camile are."

The show's judges, and show watchers, are wondering if the shy Velasco will overcome her nerves and perform well, but West said Velasco has realized she needs to calm herself and has worked on it.

"What she's realized she's nervous before the performance, once she gets on the stage, she feeds off the excitement. When she gets off the stage, she wished she could get back on. So there is no reason to be nervous," he said.

West said he and his 14-year-old son, J.J., will be in the audience tonight, while his wife, Rennie, and 7-year-old daughter, Divina, will be at home.

"Mom and sister had their turn, now it's dad and brother's turn," he said.

I actually think that her wavy.curly hair suits her better than the straight look... but she does look good either way.

i hope she picks a good song and nails it for motown. i am really willing her on to get some confidence so that she can shine and entertain us all with her great voice.

I really love Camile in her audition, and I believe that each week she is slowly over-coming her nervousness. Her soulful-ness was starting to come out during her "Desperado" performance. I hope she picks a good Motown song that showcases her beautiful voice!

From the initial readings it looks like Camille was given the tough task of being first out to perform!!! Poor girl - i hope she didnt sink.... lets hope people vote loads for her to keep her in. I'm sure with time she will get better and better. i mean if she sings ok starting off ... with her nerves problem.. then that would really bode well for the future... fingers crossed XXXXX

the band really overshadowed camille's soft tone. i was a fan of her in the auditions but if she does make it through one more week, she has got to really step up. if she doen't there's no way i see her making it to the final few weeks.

Although Camile seems to be have a rough time so far, she's not nearly as bad a John Stevens. I feel embarrassed for him when he sings. The phone lines in Hawaii were so jammed last night, unable to vote for Camile. Jasmine got 40+ from me.

You are absolutely right on this! In the Philippines, the popular term for this is "TCS" or Tia Carrere Syndrome. Filipino-hawaiians are known in the Philippines to break down their racial make-up. When I was ten, our family was suppose to migrate to hawaii. Thank God it didnt happen, the state of hawaii would probably label me as filipino-chinese-spanish-italian guy. Kinda sad dont you think? I consider myself (as well as my family) as "full-filipino", even if we have strong bloodlines on the other three because its just quite common in the Philippines. It is just unnecessary to say these, unless if you're insecure. Goodluck to Jasmine Trias, hope she can make it. I also hope that she wouldn't say im chinese-spanish-filipino if asked of her ethnicity. Represent jasmine! Truly represent!
