Celebrity Marriages - Help or Hinderance?

Well Rosie whatever her name is did it, now there is rumours Ellen Degeneres will be doing it, but do same sex Celebrity marriages actually help the cause of "real" lesbians and gays who want to get married?

Considering your average celebrity marriage straight or gay lasts about 10 minutes, I think that celebrities who do get a same sex marriage have a great risk of ruining it for everyone.

Lets say that Rosie and her partner get divorced, that will cause an upriar amonghst people who are against gay marriages. They will say that all gays are flip about wedding vows and that all gays are sleeping around, etc, etc.

Is it worth it? Should celebrity gays stay in the closet?

you're right about people pouncing on the issue if they get divorced. That's probably the reason Elton John is not talking about marrying his partner.

I don't think that they should either. And, Rosie and Kelly O'Donnell have been together for some number of years. They aren't just a new couple out to make some political statement.

Ellen Degeneres and her partner have been together for about 3 years, I believe.

Melissa and Tammy Etheridge have been together about 3 years as well.

Why would a gay couple who marry and divorce be any different than a heterosexual couple that gets divorced? Did Brittany Spears ruin marriage for future heterosexual generations because of her quickie divorce?? No, she didnt.

Most of the gay couples getting married have been, like KJ said, together a long time. Some heterosexual couples get married after dating for a few months....some of these couples have been together for years. Like KJ said...Rosie and Kelly have been together for a long time....longer than most straight couples who would have married long before Rosie and Kelly did.

If somewhere down the line Rosie and Kelly divorce...I doubt they will...but who cares? They should have the right to marry like anyone else. If somewhere down the line their marriage fails like some marriages do, are they supposed to stay together because people might say they are "flip" about wedding vows?

I guess I dont see why we have to put labels on some (gays), while others (straight's) are free to do as they please. Its so wrong to do that.

PINK has spoken out in defence of gay marriages in her latest rant. Asked about celebrity weddings, she said: 'If you want to marry your high school sweetheart for 55 hours, go ahead. If you're J-Lo and you want to marry 18 people for six days each, go ahead."

"But if you're reasonably minded and in love and want to marry your soul mate and make a life of it, and you're the same sex, we'd rather you just buy gasoline, support our war and continue to consume and fear in our country so we can make money off you. And don't hold hands in public.

I think she's being facetious. Well, that's the idea I get from reading what she's said.

Good for Pink. She's got a great point there.

I don't think Pink sees the argument. There is a reason (not just anti-gay) for an opposition to gay marriage.

It has to do with the institution of marriage as it is. By definition, it would have to change. Furthermore, courts are disregaurding the definition of marriage and marrying gays anyway. Judges aren't supposed to do things like that. And that's before even bringing up the general Christin's position on this, which America MOSTLY is.

Instead of marrying now, I think it would be healthier for the country, morally and legally, for gays to push for a change in the definition of marriage or invent a new 'term' for it.

Pink's statement is irrational in my opinion.

While it might be irrational, sayzak... let me tell you a thing or two.
I have been together with my partner for FIVE years.
We just had our wedding this weekend, but it's not real.
Why is that... because people with the opinion, like you, say that it changes everything.
Sure... what Heidi and I did changed the world. Right!
I can't wait for it to change, and we have the rights.
