Ustinov funeral in Geneva -31 mar 04

THE funeral of Oscar-winning actor and writer Peter Ustinov who died earlier in the week at the age of 82 will take place Saturday in Geneva near where he had lived for more than 30 years, his widow said.

A religious ceremony is to be held at the Saint Pierre Cathedral in the western Swiss city at 11.30am local time (10.30pm AEST), Helene Ustinov said today.
A decision on where the British-born Ustinov will be buried will be made tomorrow, though it is likely to be Bursins, the Swiss village where Ustinov had made his home since 1969, his wife said.

The local authority at Bursins has not yet been officially contacted, official Philippe Parmelin said.

Ustinov could also be buried at Westminster Abbey in London alongside other great actors, his wife said, adding she favoured this option.

The actor, who was also revered for his humanitarian work, died in the night of Sunday to yesterday at a clinic close to Bursins.

In a career spanning 60 years, Ustinov played in more than 70 films and was first nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the Roman emperor Nero in Quo Vadis in 1951.

In 1971, Ustinov became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Married three times, Ustinov had four children.
