| Posted by: fuscia | | Johnser welcome to the forum. I think they made a lot of bad decisions as to who made it to the top 12.
Stay tuned folks, some commentaries should be coming to this thread from the West Coasties about the show. They can be quite funny some weeks. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: JPLalltheway29 | | I didn't really think Amy did well at all tonight. She was nothing compared to how she did last week. Jennifer... not one of my favorites, but not bad. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | First off... obaf, I LOVE you!!!! And Amy loves you too!! Thanks!
Okay, on to Motown Night, with guest judges Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. First with them.... Nick had poor Heidi confused, and she thought that she was looking at a "SheMan" I was dying with that comment. Too funny.
Camille Valesco:
What in the WORLD was she wearing around her hips... a rug?
She can't project her voice, and she definately can't sing AND dance at the same time. But, my cats tried to help her out, and show her how.
Best Performance? What in the HELL has Paula been smoking?
Average? Simon was more on with that one. One more week though?
Personally... I say, "Pack it up!"
Jon Peter Lewis:
What is that move he was doing? That thrust! He looked like his dad, when he gets up and dances. BLECK! And my poor cats... they are laying on their backs, laughing their little heads off at this dancing, if that's what it's called... and just his overall looks tonight.
He can't dance... and no matter WHAT he's singing, he does the same moves each time.
I didn't like his voice tonight. I felt that it was "weak"
Wow... 2 for 2 - Randy and Simon agreed, back to back so far!
LaToya London:
If I didn't love Amy Adams so much, this girl would have gotten every call of mine tonight. She came out sounding incredible... and she ended sounding even better. This performance was just amazing. The cats laid in front of the tv, very focused on her... very content and purring away.
I think that this song was the right choice for her. Motown is her style... and she was by far, THE BEST performer tonight. No one came close, in my opinion. It was allllllllllllllllll her tonight.
Amy Adams:
I know that the cats were dancing in there own street while Amy was performing. They enjoyed her... but, also agreed that this wasn't her best. Country/Bluegrass is where I think she fits... and I could see her taking the Nashville Star competition on her own.
I didn't like the top that she was wearing... And what in the heck, blue in her hair now, with that bright pink? I don't like it at all.
John Stevens:
Someone PLEASE put me out of my misery. I just can't stand this kid. He belongs in Vegas, headlining a show as Frank Sinatra. My mom called me as he finished and said... "The Crooner has GOT to go!"
STOP SNAPPING AND STOP BOUNCING!! Both made him look horrible.
The cats just threw my slippers at the tv. Not happy with this performance at all. At least it's something soft. They find the remote, and I'm going to have to watch in the bedroom, due to a busted tv screen.
Jennifer Hudson:
Off key right from the first note.
Oh god... the cats have grabbed the fan and aimed it at the tv, hoping to cool her down, since she's in a heatwave, and seeing if it will blow her off the stage at the same time. That's my babies. Good taste.
Jasmine Trias:
She looks great and sounds good. She has a great presence on stage. She hit some pitchy notes throughout the song. Her voice isn't motown though...
The cats enjoyed her performance, even though it wasn't her best.
Diana DeGarmo:
First off... this song doesn't "sound" motown, in my opinion.
Second... the cats don't like her, but they ARE doing the Mashed Potato and The Twist quite well. It's impressive. My children are talented. Hey, does anyone have the number to Star Search?
Her singing
Performance on stage was good though.
Fantasia Barrino:
She did Marvin Gaye extremely proud tonight. This is her style, in my opinion. I don't like when she does those "screeches" though. Ending like Aretha wasn't good... for me. The cats... their tails poofed up with that.
George Huff:
He's active on stage... but, his voice just isn't appealing to me.
What was up with that towel? If you have it, use it. That's what one of the judges said LAST season. And then, throwing it out to the crowd? What, does he think that he's a music legend already? My cats did try to jump through the screen to chase it.
Still... it was an okay performance.
Now... who's my vote to go tomorrow night?
1. Camille Velasco
2. John Stevens
3. Diana DeGarmo
The best tonight was, by far: LaToya London
1. LaToya London
2. Fantasia Barrino
3. Jasmine Trias
4. Amy Adams
5. George Huff
6. John Peter Lewis
7. Jennifer Hudson
8. Diana DeGarmo

| Posted by: jayb47 | | Wow i'm actually surprised by that cos Amy performed amazingly last week. Jennifer always is consistent but just doesnt get the votes it seems from time to time....
Ok so in order of preference how well do you think all 10 contestants did tonight?... and who would you put in the bottom 3? | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: JPLalltheway29 | | I see the bottom 3 as being Camille, John Stevens, and either Diana or Jennifer. None of them were too great... I still gotta stand by JPL though... something about that boy... at least he was better than last week. | | Reply To this Message

|
| Posted by: JPLalltheway29 | | Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Diana at all... I don't get all the hype about her. Jennifer... she's talented, there's just something about her... I can't tell what it is... just something that bugs me about her.... *shrugs* | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | I agree... Jennifer is far from being my top 3. But, she's not the worst. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: Lawless | | 1. Amy Adams - I've liked her since her auditions, and it is NOT easy to pull off Celine Dion.
2. LaToya London - that girl is on fire, and she's got a GREAT voice.
3. Fantasia Barrino - I don't always like her voice, but, she can sing. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | Motown night was a HUGE disappointment for me. I adore Motown music, and no one really wowed me.
Camille -sang "For once in my life". A song I really like, but she sang it like a really bad wedding singer. She appeared more comfortable with the audience this week. Did her grandma know she stole her afgahn to wear as a waist scarf? She is a pretty girl and could dress better. I had to agree with Simon "she did not raise the bar".
John Peter Lewis Not his best performance when he sang "this old heart of mine". I don't care for his excessive dancing, but I love the tone of his voice. It is really growing on me every week. Simon was quite mean to him. He showed great restraint after Simon's remarks.
LaToya sang "Ooh baby baby" and she did a nice job, but the song will be forever Smokey. She had on a strange outfit. Her makeup was very nice, but the cat hair has to go.
Amy Adams Sang "dancing in the streets" I found it very boring. Amy has a great voice and she picked a safe and boring song. She does know how to connect with the audience though.
John Stevens Oh John, John, John, so out of tune tonight. His unique sound really stands out when he is off key. This style of music is not his type. I must say that his grandparents are adorable. Better luck next week and I hope he survives to do the Big Band night. He deserves a night to shine.
Jennifer Hudson Sang "Heat Wave" another song I love. well, I kept thinking Vegas when she sang. She overperformed it and I just don't like the goofy faces she makes. You should not look like someone pinched your tushie when you sing.
Jasmine sand "You're all I need to get by" a song I have never heard before. She sounded beautiful. What a great voice. So far, the best of the night.
Diana Degarmo -sang "do you love me" she sang very well, but the performance was too cutsie and cheesy. She could have picked a better song.
Fantasia sang "heard it through the grapevine" and did a bang up job. This is her style of music. The "I gotta pee bounce" still needs to go away. I did not care for the snarly face she made at the end of her song. What was that all about? Ver odd. Overall her best performance yet, but I still don't like the tone of her voice. Just my own personal taste.
George Huff sang "Aint too proud to beg" and he did the best performance of the night. His voice fit the style. George, you too have to lose the "gotta pee bounce". It is distracting as all get out. I liked the performance. Great job.
Who should go home?
1. Camille
2. John Stevens
3. ? no clue
Tops of the night
1. Tie George and Jasmine
2. Fantasia
Overall, not a great night. Last season there was always 2 or 3 people who really brought it on every week. This season, they are not even close to the plate. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Edward Teach | | I thought Camille got off to a bad start but was better in the end. When she get's out there and belts out a song it's good. She is not good with the soft low parts.
Jon Peter Lewis no matter what Simon says is pretty good. I still think he could end up in the top 3.
I was not impressed with Jennifer's song choice I don't think she came over all that well.
John Stevens was a big disappointment, he started off key and stayed off key.
I thought Amy and Diana were pretty good. Probably good enough to go thru to the next round but I still think Amy's problem is her hair. That is a huge turn off for a lot of people.
Tonight I think the powerhouse's were LaToya, Fantasia, George and Jasmine. LaToya not as good as her past performances but still up there. I am not a big fan of Fantasia but she did a very good job with her song. She just may turn it around for me. George I think found his niche, Motown was made for George.
Jasmine in my opinion is the STAR. She brings it home every week. She is fantastic.
My top 3
1. Jasmine
2, LaToya
3. George
My bottom 3
1. Camille
2. John Stevens
3. Jennifer | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: ShanFan | | LaToya and George are tied for my favorite performance of last night--I always love George, and LaToya's song blew me away despite the bad hair. I think Camile should go home; we haven't seen a single standout performance from her. How did she and JPL end up in the top 12 again? OK, John Stevens was awful last night, but we've seen spectacular quality from him in the past and I expect to see it again, provided he isn't voted off this week. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: ClaynJPLnJohnS | | Ok, guys, here's my review:
Camille: I can't stand this girl! She sings like some kind of freaked-up thug! She totally did the song she sang a BIG injustice!
JPL: Love him, love him, love him. And despite what everyone else says, I think his dancing is cute.
La Toya: hmmm....Nice hair. NOT! Not the best performance, either.
Amy: What were you thinking, girl? Is you deaf?
John: Ok, as in love as I am with John, I must say he was a tad off tonight. But (and I know people will bash me for this) I LOVED HIS PERFORMANCE!!! I'll tell you why- 1. he sang "My girl"
2. With his voice, the second i heard "motown" I was thinking 'oh, no! John's gonna stink!' but all things considered, with his style of voice, he worked with what he had. He did good considering he was way out of his element.
Jennifer: What's with the facial expressions? You look like you're in pain, lady!
Jasmine: Love the song. hate you. Sorry.
Diana: She's waaaaaay too bouncy and cutesy for american idol. I cringed when she said in her high-girlie voice "You broke my heart because I couldn't dance" I don't even want her around! And. for the record, she can't dance.
Fantasia:She rocked it!!!
George: Love ya, man! Love the energy!
Top three: JPL, Fantasia, George.
Bottom three: Camille, Amy, La Toya
They don't call me Simon for nothing! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: purplefish | | Welcome 10 tonight Motown Ryan hair shorter Funk Brothers guest judges Ashford suit... Well if I'm to do this recap properly, that was the speed at which the show was shoved down our tender throats. Every week so far has been stuffed to the brim with filler, but tonight they more than make up for it by zipping along faster than I can watch. And I'm a fast watcher, mind you. Anyway, tonight we get our first taste of guest judges. *whine* Do we have to? I have no problems with the guest band The Funk Brothers, since they are doing what they do best, playing music. If that follows, then the guest judges should be off singing somewhere and not making polite generalities in front of the real judges who have gotten the contestants this far and can finish the job on their own, thank you. Okay, enough whining. Tonight's guest judges will be played by singing/songwriting team Ashford & Simpson who I will not mention further since they said nothing worth mentioning (much like Paula).
Camille comes out first singing "For Once In My Life" and for once she is comfortable and competent. She grooves her way around the stage and looks really good up there. She looks happy for once. Her vocals are not amped loud enough, but overall it was nice. Not nice enough for Randy, but it did please Paula, who actually proved her intelligence by calling Camille Carmen! Simon said Camille had one more week to impress them and that it was only average.
How about a little JPL? Well that's all you're gonna get because he ain't getting any taller. Wow, that joke was lame! Anyway, JPL sings "This Old Heart Of Mine" wearing a country leather jacket that belonged in last week's show. This week, the Jon Peter shuffle is back, but the vocals are still underwhelming. It's not deplorable, but far from enjoyable. Randy didn't dig it, Paula said he was in the pocket, and Simon said it was very amateur.
Simon sees a cat!! Well, he'll explain in a minute. Latoya gives us her best "Ooh Baby, Baby" and once again delivers a solid, controlled performance. Her voice is smooth and her head is leaking. Well, that's the impression I got from the ultra-long wayward extensions spilling out from the tangle on her head. Randy liked the song, but not the hair. Paula shocked us all by saying she loved it. Simon said the stray matter on her head looked like a cat. Latoya claimed, maybe so, but she thought it was a beautiful cat.
Amy is next, doing exactly as she sings by "Dancing In The Street." She looks cute and hip tonight and sings very well. Not as well at last week, but no complaints here. Randy doesn't like the last note, but the rest was aiight. Paula loved it, and Simon said she looks like Jay Leno. I know that certainly reflects on her singing somehow, but I haven't latched on to it yet. One of the producers must have a thing for Amy's boyfriend as he always gets some long lingering shot after Amy sings. And we're not talking some quick side angle like most relatives are seen. Dude gets some good face time.
Alright, who wants Big Red? Yup, John Stevens is next and he sure looks sweet while he's up there slaughtering "My Girl." WoW, is it bad. Right in the middle he does a nice "so much honey" but then plunges right back into (I was going to say Leah territory, but thought I'd better not) his weak rendition. Right from the start you can see his heart is not in it. But for whatever reason, Johnny tanks. The judges all have thumbs down with Simon labeling it "abysmal."
Now that the judges are all icy, it will take Jennifer's "Heatwave" to warm them back up. She rocks the song like last year's Kim Locke only wishes. Jennifer adds sass and spark and really gets the crowd going. Randy says it was a bit over the top, but good. Paula loved it (surprise of the night) and Simon said it was "entertaining, manic, mad, but good."
Jasmine follows singing one of Ashford & Simpson's own- "You're All I Need To Get By." She looks very "womanly" in her black Lucy Liu outfit. Her singing has a couple brief weak spots, but overall it was strong. Solid, but not amazing. Randy said the last note was good and the rest was just okay. Paula loved it and Simon said she was the best of the night so far.
"Do You Love Me Now" is Diana's question to all of us. She coos and wails intermittently, putting her big voice to good use. She again has on a long skirt- just a poodle short of the real thing. Now Randy says SHE'S the best of the night, Paula says she can blow, and Simon says she's vocally good, but gave a high school routine instead of a superstar performance.
Fantasia walks out next wearing a bathmat as she sings "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Well, someone from the other end of the grapevine should have whispered not to wear that thing. It is strapped to her back in a way that looks like she's being devoured by a giant pink clam. Sure, when she wears the elegant black gown last week, Simon whines, but he says nothing when she looks like she's escaped from a vicious bowl of chowder. hahaha Sorry i just dont like her outfit last night! But She really sang well last night! I love her voice and her stage presence. The judges all rave, with Paula noting that she touched everyone, including physical touches for the band members. Simon said "superb." I especially loved Fantasia's look of supreme superiority that dared anyone to oppose her as she sang her last few notes. It's her modesty that just wins me over every time.
George comes out to clean up, even bringing a hand towel out with him. After beating down an immediate flash of Corey from last year, I refocus on George's awesome "Ain't Too Proud To Beg." Sorry judges, but HE is the best of the night. His bounce is back and when he throws is towel into the crowd it nicely lands on some girl's head. AWESOME!! Randy raves. Paula says George proved Simon wrong for calling him a background singer during the Semi-finals, so Simon went ahead and actually took back his comment.
Overall, I wasn't too impressed tonight. Jasmine, Latoya, Fantasia and George were the most entertaining in my opinion. We'll see what the voters have to say about it tonight. If people voted based on performance alone, I'd say Camille, John and JPL should be in the bottom, but everyone remaining has their own hefty fan base by now, so anything is possible and I'm not even gonna try to predict this one. Drumroll..... | | Reply To this Message

I think JPL would be good if he could sing. Huff has goodboy appeal. IF DIANA LEARNS SOME MOVES SHE WILL TAKE IT. John Stevens needs a certain song that fits his style. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: oldbutafan | | I keep doing this --- typing out reviews and my sub-standard clipboard eats it ! Again ... I don't have the time to re-type it all so here's a down and dirty:
In performance Order:
Camile Better. I have to give her credit for trying ... (even Simon started to compare her effort when critiquing John S. ) ... For once in her Idol life Camile has almost stopped crying ... although she still looks on the verge, and sadly after the pitchy performance and rough stage movements ... we may see tears from this beauty. Will they carry her out wrapped in that rug she was wearing?
JPL Jon Boy did not sound pitchy to me but looked uncomfortable yet again. Could it be that old heart of his isn't old enough to understand things like stacking the deck via the themes, and favoritism and all that ? I thought his voice sounded better this week, but his delivery was quite stilted. He looked like he had gum on his shoes tonight. Maybe he was trying to follow their "advice" and NOT bad-dance ? He is VERY polite and said thank you very calmly when Randy and Simon ripped him.
Latoya Ooooo Baby, Baby ... I'm gonna' barf. Latoya certainly CAN do wrong and this was NOT a near perfect performance as they made out to be. Randy was right ... she started out bad ... very bad ... and did not truly get it together for the rest of the song. She tried to do the designer thing with this song and really ...Latoya is an off-the-rack girl. Accept it. It was "aight" and that's all. Will Randy start hollering cat instead of "dawg" ?
Amy Amy we hardly knew ye ! Where's our Amy from last week ? And the hair. Is she trying out international flag colors or what ? What next ? Red. White and Green for the Italian Flag ?
Not up to snuff compared with last week and the final notes sent us out Dancing in the streets ... mostly because our ears hurt inside. She still connects with the audience so maybe a gig on the tonight show ? ... or will there be sibling rivalry ?
John S IV John why the hell didn't you listen when I told you to croon "You Send Me" ? Your girls will stop voting if you don't get it together and pick the right song to interpret in your style ! This was a very tepid delivery of a song that has no boiling point anyway. This worries me. I hope he'll last long enough to at least have a bright shining moment.
Jennifer It was a good performance ... and leave it to Simon to occasionally find the right word ... "manic". Jenn, you are trying way too hard and when you display those facial expressions ... especially the eyes ... you slip into a frightening heat wave that has us sweating !
Jasmine She''ll need more than last night's performance to get by ... but that's all she did ... just "got by" with an off-key, off-tune and very poorly arranged rendition and so-so delivery. I know some heard this as better ... but rewind and replay ... you may agree.
Diana "Coming to you from tonight straight from the Pop-Farm," ... Diana wan'ts to know if we love her in this high school recital calibre performance. Still very off-the-rack and tonight it was discount mall. Diana doesn't connect and I feel like she thinks I'm dumb enough to think she is singing for me. No you're not Diana ... it's all about cutsey you.
Fantasia Fantasia now just does the minimal with a little yeah, yeah, yeah at the end. I guess she heard through the grapevine that all she has to do is show up to win. The touching the band during the performance was over-the-top in the classless category. In my opinion it was without respect and condescending to these older musicians. Like touching the patients in a nursing home.
George George connects and combine this with a genre he was born to sing and I guess his delivery wasn't too proud because doesn't have to beg for votes and he now knows this. He was alright and a good closer for the night... but this will remain Smokey's domain. The towel thing was a big miscalculation IMO, but he mentioned his signature sweating last week and I guess that wss what it was all about , but I hated the towel ! Unnatural and Hokey !
..............................
Throwing towels ?
The only ones who acknowledged this legendary back-up band was Camile with her "Give it up for the band" at the beginning and Fantasia with that embarassing touching condecension.
Not a single one simply turned to them at the end of their song with a hand raised in thanks and acknowledgement.
They throw sweaty towels to the audience instead.
Sorry. No class.
If I sound a little angry throughout my comments ... well I am ... and disappointed. I so looked forward to this and what a big let down.

becker ... glad you're hanging out with us here.
Diana is just too false and "wind-up" for me.
And as for screaming ... they all do. Camile's "screams" are more like wobbly moans, JPL swallows his and George goes raspy and calls them sexy.
Really the ONLY one who doesn't scream at least sometimes is John Stevens and he gets criticized for that.
Stick around, becker.

| Posted by: Lawless | | Okay... the poll has been closed, and it look's like the majority in here are saying that it's either Camille or John Stevens. It's really close.
I've opened the thread to discuss tonight's "dismissal" and please keep ALL convo of that in that thread only. | | Reply To this Message

! Camille is a total disaster for get her she is going
2, JPL. WAs entertaining at least he enjoys what he is doing
3. Latoya she don't move me but the judges all gushed so she will be around.
4. Amy I think she gave a super performance, Dancing in the Streets was good and I resent the udges carping on her.
5. John Stevens. Oh my he was terriible! What a shame!
6. Jenn. I liked her tonight, a bit "manic" but she still came over well.
7. Jasmine Super This girl is going to be in the final three
8. Diana. Contrived but she has a voice, just not for me.
9. Fantasia. I thought she rocked tonight. She will be the top three.
10 George , my homeboy took it home, beat of the eveningIMO
I have something to say about having Guest Judges. May we please have some living ones. These two looked like they were defrosted from their cyrogenic tubes and set up to judge.
EEK! Of cpurse they love everyone, when you have been brought back to life and hear your songs, anyone sounds good.
Bad DElta BAd. JMO
Top three:
George Huff
Fantasia
Amy Adams.

Ok, guys, here's my review:
JPL: Love him, love him, love him. And despite what everyone else says, I think his dancing is cute.

YAY!!! So glad someone has the same opinion as me. I think his dancing is adorable. Simon and Randy are way too hard on him. He's amazing.

Welcome 10 tonight Motown Ryan hair shorter Funk Brothers guest judges Ashford suit...

The judges all have thumbs down with Simon labeling it "abysmal."
http://www.idolonfox.com/photosvideos/3-30-04/images/galpic_10.jpg
Now that the judges are all icy, it will take Jennifer's "Heatwave" to warm them back up. She rocks the song like last year's Kim Locke only wishes. Jennifer adds sass and spark and really gets the crowd going. Randy says it was a bit over the top, but good. Paula loved it (surprise of the night) and Simon said it was "entertaining, manic, mad, but good."
http://www.idolonfox.com/photosvideos/3-30-04/images/galpic_11.jpg
Jasmine follows singing one of Ashford & Simpson's own- "You're All I Need To Get By." She looks very "womanly" in her black Lucy Liu outfit. Her singing has a couple brief weak spots, but overall it was strong. Solid, but not amazing. Randy said the last note was good and the rest was just okay. Paula loved it and Simon said she was the best of the night so far.
http://www.idolonfox.com/photosvideos/3-30-04/images/galpic_12.jpg

Sure, when she wears the elegant black gown last week, Simon whines, but he says nothing when she looks like she's escaped from a vicious bowl of chowder. hahaha Sorry i just dont like her outfit but she sure did a very good performance last night!

Paula says George proved Simon wrong for calling him a background singer during the Semi-finals, so Simon went ahead and actually took back his comment.
http://www.idolonfox.com/photosvideos/3-30-04/images/galpic_13.jpg
Overall, I wasn't too impressed tonight. Jasmine, Latoya, Fantasia and George were the most entertaining in my opinion. We'll see what the voters have to say about it tomorrow. If people voted based on performance alone, I'd say Camille, John and Jennifer should be in the bottom, but everyone remaining has their own hefty fan base by now, so anything is possible and I'm not even gonna try to predict this one. Drumroll.....

| Posted by: becker | | I don't think there were any standouts. I love Diana's voice, the only one that really has a good voice. I think Huff will probably come out on top, not for his voice, but his stage presence. If he keeps picking up fans he could go on to be successful-even tho' I don't care for him. If Diana gets a stage coach, she could zoom past them all. | | Reply To this Message
