Do you agree with the British poll that says The Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written? I've ben thinking about it and I can't make up my mind whether I do or not!

I do, but i think its obvious i would say that!

I think it was the best book ever.

I very rarely read a book more than once. I will read a book twice if it was really good. I've read Lord of the Rings 6 times. It's the best book I've ever read, and I don't even like fantasy. Middle Earth and it's characters feel real to me. I don't feel like I am reading about fantasy or mythology, I feel like I am reading about history. Tolkien even created languages for Middle Earth. It has timeless themes that everyone can enjoy.

It is an incredible book... much thought, and imagination, and creativity went into making the entire story, the whole of Middle Earth so real, and loved. Is this the best book ever written? Well, it depends. It could be the best written of it's genre.

It's amazing how everytime you re read the book, you pick up new details and learn something new. And there are other books that you can read if you can't get enough. Tolkien wrote several books about Middle Earth.

There are so many reasons to love LOTR. I think one great reason are the Hobbits. These small little folk that were overlooked by the powerful change the course of Middle Earth with their courage and desire to do the right thing.

Yeah, I agree with mistyrain. It's probably the best FANTASY book ever written. The sheer detail that went into the story is what drew me. But I don't really think that the "best book ever" can really be stated. It's really an opinion. So this should really be "your favorite book". Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed the story.

I agree with MistyRainWater agreeing with KJ... they are definately the best Fantasy books (in my opinion, though I'm not a huge fan of the genre), but best ever? Well, for one thing, I don't see how you you can say something is better than another, because it's generally a matter of opinion... and also, just a reach here, but if you'd asked that same question 5 years ago, I don't think Lord Of The Rings would have gotten anywhere near as many votes as it did in this recent poll.

Yeah I think that there were quite a few young boys who thought the film was "wicked" so voted for the books.

That's what they say, HECK. But it took him many years to write it, so he couldn't have been under the influence the whole time.

yes, it IS the best book written though it tops with one of my favortie series "The Outlander series" But Diana Gabaldon.

I think the way the writer has written the book is simply awesome. The mood he creates, the creativity and the meaning in it as well. These were probly the things I liked best about LOTR. It was not plain fantasy, it also carried good messages creatively. But I wouldn't say it's the best book EVER either. I reckon whether a book is the best or not is more of an individual opinion depending on factors like their age, their liking etc. But its definitely a really good book.

I've always heard that War and Peace is the best novel ever written. I got it at the library once and had it for 3 weeks and only made it to page 13. Those names!!!!!!!!!!

He wrote the book for 19 years. And the story was originately for his kids, not for the whole public. It says that he was about to not publish it when the publisher says that he had to divide the books into three parts! He didn't like that idea.
How can he be on something? Usually the pot heads' memories are very poor. JRR Tolkien knows 14 languages. And one of them the Old English. He taught it in Oxford University. He was also the editor of the Oxford (or was it Webster?) Dictionary. Which is why there's the word "Hobbit" in it! I checked it. He was a great friend of C.S. Lewis. And a very religious man.
