| Posted by: up_to_no_good | | Do you agree with the British poll that says The Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written? I've ben thinking about it and I can't make up my mind whether I do or not! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | I very rarely read a book more than once. I will read a book twice if it was really good. I've read Lord of the Rings 6 times. It's the best book I've ever read, and I don't even like fantasy. Middle Earth and it's characters feel real to me. I don't feel like I am reading about fantasy or mythology, I feel like I am reading about history. Tolkien even created languages for Middle Earth. It has timeless themes that everyone can enjoy. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | It is an incredible book... much thought, and imagination, and creativity went into making the entire story, the whole of Middle Earth so real, and loved. Is this the best book ever written? Well, it depends. It could be the best written of it's genre. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | It's amazing how everytime you re read the book, you pick up new details and learn something new. And there are other books that you can read if you can't get enough. Tolkien wrote several books about Middle Earth. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | There are so many reasons to love LOTR. I think one great reason are the Hobbits. These small little folk that were overlooked by the powerful change the course of Middle Earth with their courage and desire to do the right thing. | | Reply To this Message

Good point, Sherry. Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

I have to agree with KJ on this, not sure if its the best book EVER....but probably the best written of its genre....But as fuscia said there are so many things you can love about Lord of the Rings! It's incredible how Tolkien created an entire Middle Earth and an Elvish language, dont think I can think of any other books that did that

| Posted by: Spaliznad | | Yeah, I agree with mistyrain. It's probably the best FANTASY book ever written. The sheer detail that went into the story is what drew me. But I don't really think that the "best book ever" can really be stated. It's really an opinion. So this should really be "your favorite book". Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed the story. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: gaboman | | I agree with MistyRainWater agreeing with KJ... they are definately the best Fantasy books (in my opinion, though I'm not a huge fan of the genre), but best ever? Well, for one thing, I don't see how you you can say something is better than another, because it's generally a matter of opinion... and also, just a reach here, but if you'd asked that same question 5 years ago, I don't think Lord Of The Rings would have gotten anywhere near as many votes as it did in this recent poll.
Definately awesome though. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: up_to_no_good | | Yeah I think that there were quite a few young boys who thought the film was "wicked" so voted for the books. | | Reply To this Message

In all honesty... I don't want to look at a post that says, Ditto.
We prefer talking on here, to a one word post.
Grant, you're doing just fine.

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | That's what they say, HECK. But it took him many years to write it, so he couldn't have been under the influence the whole time. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: RedNoodles | | I think the way the writer has written the book is simply awesome. The mood he creates, the creativity and the meaning in it as well. These were probly the things I liked best about LOTR. It was not plain fantasy, it also carried good messages creatively. But I wouldn't say it's the best book EVER either. I reckon whether a book is the best or not is more of an individual opinion depending on factors like their age, their liking etc. But its definitely a really good book. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: KerryO | | I've always heard that War and Peace is the best novel ever written. I got it at the library once and had it for 3 weeks and only made it to page 13. Those names!!!!!!!!!!

Do they say that? No way. They say that Lewis Carrol was on drugs though. And I'mnot suprised. Have you read Alice in Wonderland?

Do you really think that the boys who watched the film and liked it would watch a competition for the best book ever? It's not the sort of T.V they'd watch. And I suppose the Americans didn't see it, but does anyone think that they were being really harsh on it? Apart from Meera Syal, they were critisising it at every possible moment. I was yelling at the screen... Did I just say that?

| Posted by: twisted_wizard | | He wrote the book for 19 years. And the story was originately for his kids, not for the whole public. It says that he was about to not publish it when the publisher says that he had to divide the books into three parts! He didn't like that idea.
How can he be on something? Usually the pot heads' memories are very poor. JRR Tolkien knows 14 languages. And one of them the Old English. He taught it in Oxford University. He was also the editor of the Oxford (or was it Webster?) Dictionary. Which is why there's the word "Hobbit" in it! I checked it. He was a great friend of C.S. Lewis. And a very religious man. | | Reply To this Message
