i saw that when he and fantasia were going at one another that night. the camera stayed on it for some time. i don't know if it was intentional or not. i've seen simon do that many times, though. i've just never seen it (the gesture) stay apparent for that long. fantasia was giving him some lip though. who knows. i can't believe someone as professional as he is would do something like that in that environment.

Ryan said he has seen Simon do that hundreds of times ... that he sort of rests his hand that way.

So ... Ryan asked Simon about it by phone on his OnAir show and Simon said "Give me a break, this happens every year."

He said that finger doesn't mean anything anyway as in England and for the British, the equivalent flip-off hand gesture is "an upside-down peace sign".

I think he is just one of those people who scratches with that finger.

I've seen a lot of people do that and they don't even think about it. When I saw it I knew it was innocent.

I actually lost a good contract because my business partner made a gesture that was taken wrong. He was directing it to someone else and was told that gesture was a way to secretly contact others in his group when I think they really were pulling his leg about it.

I can't believe that it has become such a big deal. He's not the type to be so subtle. If he wanted to be disrespectful, he'd just come out and say something rude. I don't think he would resort to a subtle hand gesture.

My dad used to do that and he was not being rude.

Thanks for the welcome Sherry. I'm not really new here though. I originally came to Inreview because of AI, but got distracted by the LOTR forum. Now that is all over, so I'm back. Never really gone though. I read this forum a lot, just don't post

Chodder you nut.

I'll bet there are more than a few people Simon would like to flip off.

No big deal. Simon's not like that, he wouldn't do that on purpose, he knows he could get in to trouble if he does anything like that. He enjoys himself a lot on this show, even more so than in the British version. He has what could probably be the best job in the world, he gets paid millions. He would never do anything to jepordise it.

Would you?

COWELL DEFENDS HIS OFFENSIVE FINGER

"American Idol" judge Simon Cowell has come under fire for inadvertently giving contestants a rude finger sign on the show on Tuesday night.

Keen-eyed viewers felt sure that Cowell purposely "flipped the bird" for all to see while resting his head on his hand, and Internet site the Drudge Report exposed the controversy Wednesday.

But Brit music mogul Cowell insists fans of the show and TV watchdogs are making a fuss about nothing.

He says, "Give me a break. If you scratch your nose with your middle finger, you're flipping somebody off; you put your head in your hands. It's crazy.

"If it carries on like this, we'll all be wearing boxing gloves on the show."
