Do you think the contestants need help from a stylist or a vocal coach? You can pick individual contestants and answer.

I think you need an ear coach.

You seemed to have missed the point of the thread. Actually I was a music major, so my ears are just fine. I have the grades to prove it.

J&B, is that a fresh attitude, aimed at one of our staff? Not the way to start out at INReview.

Now, I'm sure that you have a lot to share, but tearing down our staff, and members, isn't necessary, nor welcomed.

I think that they really could use a stylist sometimes. I'm not really familiar with the people this year, but Clay Aiken sure needed it last season. I think that some of the girls are probably more into fashion than the guys and probably know how to dress already, but guys, like George Huff, could really use a stylist to help with the image thing. I don't think they should get a vocal coach, because if they can't sing by now they shouldnt be on AI. i think maybe they could get some help and advice for thier voices, but not anything major, like lessons.

I like George Huff's style, I thnik it makes him unique and the person he is. I don't think they need a voice coach OR astylist because it's better for them to be natural, and show off their personality, not be moulded into something that they're not.

ohhh.....i do agree with that. I think that the contestants shouldn't change their style, but should be given a hand if they need it with what clothes they wear. They don't have to be turned into people they're not, but I think that a lot of the finalists wouldnt know where to start if they had to dress themsleves with somehing to wear in front of 30 million people. I certainly hope I'm seeing the top 12 dressing in a way that suits their own personality and that they're not made up to be something that isnt at all them.

I think that the wardrobe assistance and vocal coaching is and definitely should be one of the priveleges of making it to the Final 12 of 70,000 or whatever.

The vocal coach assists them with rehearsal and presenting their individual instruments (voices) in the best way. She may also assist with songs that they perhaps have never even heard before. It seems like the right thing.

The contestants are given money each week for wardrobe and the stylists go shopping with them and help them find the best and the most for the money allotted.
Of course they make suggestions and they are professionals.
So let's say George asked their advice on how to look younger ... and they suggested he shave his mustache and maybe try a leather jacket and they help him find one cheap. I think that's great !

I think the only one who really has a sense of her own "fashion" style is LaToya. The rest of them need some help.

John S ... needs to let his hair grow and work his look to give it a "today" feel and younger. He looks like he's headed for church.

JPL ... needs something. He always looks a touch messy. Not just casual ... messy. He needs something to pull it together.

Jasmine ... wears skirts/dresses of the wrong length for her. I don't know if it's the camera angle or what, but she looks squat and knobby kneed. No fair !

Diana ... looks just okay and surprisingly a bit "stocky". What's up with that ? She needs to try all one color that makes her look slimmer and taller.

Camile ... she has a body that can pull off most anything ... except camouflage skirts and bubble-gum tops. She needs help "co-ordinating" things.

Jennifer ... Well she's working on it. She needs to loosen up the tops a little. They always look just a tad too small. I was distracted by her blouse coming ot of the front of her jacket last week, so maybe the jacket was to small or the wrong cut.

Fantasia ... the black sequinned dress was horrid and it greyed her skin tones. Prints look crummy on her too. She needs some solid colors that flatter her skin tone, and that don't distract from her.

Amy ... She needs to continue to tone down the hair. I'll leave the rest to KJ because she's been watching her more closely.

See fuscia ... aren't you sorry you asked ?

Nope I am not. Are you sure OBAF that you are not a stylist? You made some good calls. I agreed with all of them. I think the vocal coach is needed for the yellers out there.

Vocal coaches are good to help them gain confidence in the songs that the contestants are about to sing - there are definitely going to be weeks when they have to sing a song that they have never heard before. It enables them to gain constructive critisism from someone who listens to their performances during training so that they can be better prepared for the big nights.

Stylists is a strange one. I'm not too convinced on that one. One thing i have noticed is a trend for the ladies to go from curly to the straight look! Would that indicate that they all have the same stylist or do they get indivual stylists/vocal coaches??? Does anyone know?

i thought about this a little more, and I think the Idols would benefit from both a voice and style coach, but only for a little bit. Like, jayb47 said, vocal coaches would allow them to expand their voices, and help them hit the notes perfectly. I know it sounds weird for people in a singing contest to need voice training, but it's not liek they need to know how to sing better, they just need to learn how to control their voice and use it to their best advantages. My best example would be Jennifer Hudson, she has a really REALLY good voice, and I thought her perfomance was when she sang "Imagine".... but I think her voice she over-shouts at times, and she should control this.
And about stylist... they might need a style adviser.... as in someone who would look over a selection of their clothes and sort of guide them alon their way, but they don't need someone who tells that what to wear and what not to wear.

I would venture a guess that there is a team of stylists.
Ryan Seacrest had the head hair guy on his show ... and basically he/they make recommendations as to how to enhance a look or how to move towards a look that the contestant might want or that a stylist might suggest.
He took "credit" for putting hair extensions on Kelly Clarkson.

As for the wardrobe ... as mentioned they are given money each week to shop for wardrobe Some things that are in the suitcases they brought might suffice, but they're not going out to a bar. They are performing on a stage, under lights and being televised. The wardrobe choices have to "work" --- for their comfort, perhaps with the evening's theme, then there's the lights and cameras for TV and for the people sitting furthest away from the stage, etc. Think about it. The contestants can't know what will work best in that compound situation. Their job is to sing. I guess we could almost call it costuming. It's necessary.

As for the voice coach ... it's a coach, not a voice teacher, per se. Again ... the circumstances may be totally different than anything they have ever done. One of them Camile or Jasmine had NEVER performed before a large audience. John Steven's is shown singing at family weddings and in the High School gym.
They may not even know how to properly use the microphone !
Again ... this is different very different for some of them, and the coach helps them showcase their singing talent in this venue.

Make sense ?

Source of this article is a Columbus, Ohio Newspaper ... so that's what they mean by "Local".

Local stylist tapped to work on American Idol finalists

Local stylist Jacob Neal will make over the final eight contestants on "American Idol" in April.

Neal, founder of Jacob Neal Salon on 275 S. Fourth St., will take a team to Los Angeles April 7-10.

Neal has styled hair on VH1's Born to Diva tour and for Olympic Gold Medallist Kristi Yamaguchi's wedding party.

He founded his salon in 1991 in German Village and relocated downtown in 2001. His salon employs 25.

Maybe for an Oldies theme ? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Ohio, right ?

Anyone here from Columbus and know this guy and his "work" ?

Will he put Jasmine in Vera Wang so she really looks like Kristi Y ?
