Spain politicians voted out for support of US led war in Iraq |
| Posted by: oneofpeace | | MADRID, Spain - Spain's Socialists scored a dramatic upset in elections Sunday, unseating conservatives stung by charges they provoked the Madrid terror bombings by supporting the U.S.-led war in Iraq and making Spain a target for al-Qaida.
It was the first time a government that backed the Iraq war has been voted out of office. Incoming prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has pledged to bring home the 1,300 troops Spain has stationed in Iraq when their tour of duty ends in July.

I guess this is just more victims in the wake of blind support. There will be more fall out in the days to come. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: JY_French | | Peace, there is another source of dissatisfaction for the Spanish, even if it was certainly not prevalent in their decision to vote out Aznar, given the recent tragedy - the wreckage of the tanker "Prestige" some time ago, polluting hundreds of miles of the northern coasts of Spain. This is mainly due to a poor management of the crisis by the authorities - such a disaster was avoidable. Millions of inhabitants were particularly infuriated by this. It certainly came in the balance. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: oneofpeace | | Yes I know, but Spain's support of Iraq has sealed Aznar's fate. In the end what has the world gained from Iraq's invasion? Look what the US has gained. They ask themselves (citizens) was it worth it, especially since it seems to have made little to no difference in Al Qaeda activities or ridding the world of WMD.
Britain, France, and Austrailia are next on the political fallout agenda. The people will speak loudly and those that simply tell the world this is a fight against terror while having little to show for it will now have to pay the piper. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: JY_French | | Agreed Peace. My conclusion is that it is more urgent than ever that our governants meet together and - really - work hand in hand within the UN. It's time to give away the good ole rhetorics about France (or X)-willing-the-US-undermined. Conversely, I would appreciate myself the Chirac's crowd to leave behind part of power within the UN if it helps this institution to work efficiently (is the veto power still relevant ? a real international representation isn't it more appropriate ? - shouldn't the five permanent members give this world a real representation, instead of a League of Nation-like impotent organism ?).
There is another condition - I leave to you, Peace, and to your fellow countrymen, the choice of tomorrow's world come November 3rd. I think you see what I mean. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: oneofpeace | | Yes I do. JY I think Bush is jeopordizing the US maintaining their seat on the UN Council (5 permenant members with veto power). We were voted out once beforel. I think Bush showed the world to the extent in which we will wield that influence, even if we appear to be unjust before them. | | Reply To this Message
