Police were called to control crowds when thousands of fans turned up to meet pop star-turned-reality TV queen Jessica Simpson at a Massachusetts store on Thursday night.
Simpson was hosting an album signing at the Wal-Mart in Danvers and the crowd became so big at one point that police had to shut down roads leading to the store. They eventually shut the signing down and told fans to go home.
Police then had to keep the peace when fans outside the store rushed to get a last sight of their heroine.
Three teenagers were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and another was charged with assault and battery and a police officer was scratched in the face.
Simpson has since apologized to fans who missed out on meeting her. In a posting on her Web site she says, "I want to thank all my fans in Danvers and Boston for coming to see me. I am so sorry that I was not able to meet all of you. Given the large crowd, the police asked the store to shut down out of concern for your safety. I feel very blessed to have the love and support of my fans and hope to meet you all in the future."
Singer Nick Lachey has expressed his frustration at the musical success his wife Jessica Simpson is enjoying, while his own pop career continues to flounder.
Lachey and Simpson enjoyed a huge boost to their celebrity status when they hit the TV last year in their reality show "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica."
And while Simpson is currently sitting high on the Billboard charts with her album In This Skin, Lachey's first solo effort, Soul-O, has performed very badly.
He tells Details magazine, "It's been frustrating. For Jessica, the show has translated into musical success. For me, it's been a little bizarre.
"I'm now more recognized as the start of a reality-television program than as a musician."

On the season finale, when Nick gave her a Valentine's Day card, she handed the card back to him saying that she couldn't read his handwriting and that he should read it to her, which he did.
In the back of a limo on her way to tape a segment for VH-1, Jessica says she can't read her script because she'll get car sick.
While staying at a hotel in New York, she couldn't figure out which room she was in even though the hotel keys had the room's number printed on them.
She couldn't figure out the directions for payment methods at a gas station pump even though they were written on the pump.
She constantly gives Nick presents, but is never shown giving him a card.
Even with the infamous 'Chicken of the Sea' incident, the can clearly says "tuna."
Pop couple Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have turned down a reported $1 million deal for their proposed marriage advice book.
The pair submitted a book proposal to a New York publisher earlier this year for "Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's Secrets for a Happy (and Sexy!) Marriage," a how-to guide on marital bliss -- even though they only wed in October 2002.
Simpson says, "Nick and I would love to do a book about [reality show] 'Newlyweds,' about surviving it and what goes into it, what to expect.
"I think people expect marriage to be perfection, and that's not what it is. You see that on the 'Newlyweds' -- we fight all the time. That's what makes a marriage healthy.
"We are not scholars on relationships, but I think we're definitely in a groove."
However, the couple's literary agent says they're going to pass on the current offer on the table.
