Pretty scary: Pentagon's report |

I just hope Bush tries (again) to get the country moving forward on hydrogen fule cells. | | Reply To this Message

Sayzak, as already discussed in another thread, hydrogen fuels isn't a solution as long as hydrogen will be obtained from oil reforming. Pollution is even increased since global yields are worse. Honestly, can you expect an oilman such as Bush forget his friends, his former business, his own interests in this field, and decide that it is time to really change the sources of energy ?
It is time to wake up, and this awakening does concern everybody. | | Reply To this Message

MrJukoVette, just remember: If it's BAD thing, Bush either did it, is doing it or will do it.

| Posted by: JY_French | | Stop to spin things this outrageously guys. Unbelievable. Juko, I might be a fool - who knows, that's perhaps the reason why I am coming here to discuss with you - but I am not the person asserting that hydrogen needed at such industrial scale created by this new american market could not be provided by other means that oil reforming. Scientists and skilled engineers do so. Do you have any idea of the quantity of fuel at stake ? How do you want to have so much hydrogen produced at the beginning ? With electrolytical cells converting water to H2 and O2 ? Even if so, where would the required electricity come from ? Nuclear power plants ? Give it a break.
I will try to find some more stuff on the web. My sources are picked from printed magazines (scientific ones, not political). | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: MrJukoVette | | JY ofcourse we are not going to move the whole country to use hydrogen at the same time! I think, first existing gas stations will be modernised to support hydrogen cars, gas prices will go up to stimulate hydrogen industry. Then slowly, year after year, gasoline and diesel engines will be fully replaced with hydrogen or other types of fuel.
Bush actually set a time period - 2020, when people should start buying their new hydrogen vehicles. Bush allocated funds for the research. And really, why do you think it's not possible? Nuclear reactors provide a lot of energy, and fusion reactors are to be developped sooner or later. Sun, wind and water are not used as energy sources to the possible extent yet. And, we are only in the beginning of the 21st century. Imagine the possibilities, and remember: humans have gone thru much bigger problems than electricity shortage or unavailability of personal transport. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: MrJukoVette | | For example, i would be fine to take a bus to work and back - if there was one coming close to my workplace. Unfortunately, there is none.
What do EU countries do to get rid of gasoline cars? I guess we could discuss the differences between our ways of achieving the same goal.... | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: JY_French | | EU countries have very different policies regarding public transport. Car manufacturers lobbying is powerful - particularly in France, where the automotive industry is more than significant within the whole economical activity.
In France, the railways are a dense network. Fast trains reach a commercial speed of 300 km/h. It is an easy and affordable way to cross the country in about all directions. Meanwhile, the motorways network is itself very dense. France is a crossroad in western Europe and roads here are very busy. You will see solid columns of trucks on the highways wherever you go. Transport of trucks by train, even officially promoted, is insufficient in comparison with what it could - and should - be.
There are policies encouraging the use of natural gas to fuel the cars. This technology is far less polluting and the number of equiped vehicles is growing fast.
There is research about hydrogen and electricity powered vehicles, but it remains an unsignificant part of the vehicles on the roads. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sayzak | | hydogen fule cells aren't even the best alternative, in my opinion.
Soy beans!!! (research this, it's amazing, and enactable right NOW). | | Reply To this Message

I simply can't believe it. For the very first time, I do agree with you. This is what we expect the USA to do: lead the way to a safer and better world by using its fantastic ability to research and developp new technologies, not to go to war against pretended facts.

| Posted by: MrJukoVette | | Actually - you might call me a dead-end neocon - but private mass-transit is better than public one. I believe, all transportation should be privatised - highways (express routes), railways, etc. would operate better if controlled by people and not government. | | Reply To this Message

I agree with you there. I don't want the government havong conrtrol over any aspect of my life. But it would be cool to put some money toward creating fule cells or grassolean products. Then let the private industries take it from there.
I'm not sure about the roads though, people might invent a concrete which appears nice at first (like a car) but falls apart as soon as someone drives on it.
