Rosie O'Donnell flew across the country Thursday to marry her longtime girlfriend in the city where more than 3,300 other same-sex couples have tied the knot since Feb. 12.

The couple traveled to San Francisco from New York on Thursday morning, said Cindi Berger, O'Donnell's publicist. They have a 1 p.m. appointment to pick up a marriage license, according to the mayor's office.

"We, too, have a dream of equality for all families," the comedian and former talk show host said in a statement. "The only way changes are made in society is when people like Mayor Gavin Newsom have the courage to stand up against injustice."

City officials didn't know who O'Donnell wants to officiate when she marries her girlfriend, Kelli Carpenter, said Francisco Castillo, a spokesman for the mayor. The women plan to take their vows on the steps of City Hall, according to Berger.

Earlier Thursday, O'Donnell announced her wedding plans on ABC's "Good Morning America," just two days after President Bush called for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

She said the president's call is what inspired her to come to San Francisco, where city officials continue to perform same-sex weddings even as state courts are considering the legality of those marriages.

"I think the actions of the president are, in my opinion, the most vile and hateful words ever spoken by a sitting president," O'Donnell said on the program. "I am stunned and I'm horrified.

"I find this proposed amendment very, very, very, very shocking. And immoral. And, you know, if civil disobedience is the way to go about change, then I think a lot of people will be going to San Francisco. And I hope they put more people on the steps to marry as many people as show up. And I hope everyone shows up."

O'Donnell said she decided to marry Carpenter, a former dancer and marketing director at Nickelodeon, during her recent trial in New York over the now-defunct Rosie magazine. During the case, she referred to Carpenter as her wife.

"We applied for spousal privilege and were denied it by the state. As a result, everything that I said to Kelli, every letter that I wrote her, every e-mail, every correspondence and conversation was entered into the record," O'Donnell said. "After the trial, I am now and will forever be a total proponent of gay marriage."

That's another way that civil unions are not equivilant to the rights and privilages of a marriage. To say that civil unions are just as good, if not the same thing as a marriage if completely false.
If same sex marriage is legalized, people would have to accept the fair and equal treatment of homosexuals in society. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Good for her

Could I ask who her wife is?

Kelly is her partner of many years. She's not anyone famous.

Oh I see, that's nice then

I like to see when celebrities marry outside the "popular" circle...

I do too... Rosie is really happy with Kelly. They are a cute couple.
And, they have like 3 adopted kids, and Kelly gave birth to their first child last year.

that's nice. I heard about the adoption thing, that's how I found out Rosie was gay...

It's actually a joke in a TV show. Girl wants her dad to teach her to drive, but he wont so she cries: "Fine, then I'll never learn how to drive, so I'll never become popular and I'll never get married and I'll end up having to adopt a kid like Rosie O'Donnell" ... to which the father replies "...Are you implying that Rosie O'Donnell can't drive?"

So I looked it up

Though I should've guessed... I mean... she's actually funny. That should've been evidence enough...

That's funny, Grant.

Well, I'm just so happy for Rosie and Kelly.
And I love that she's standing up to 'fight'

yup, it's wonderful... and as long as you have such influentual people in this battle, it'll never be over

Well, until gays are allowed to marry of course... then it'll be over

I'm happy for the two of them too. I hope more gay celebrities follow in their footsteps to help support the cause!

Yes, I'm waiting to see if Melissa Etheridge and her wife, Tammy Lynn Michael's go do this. Or Ellen Degeneres and her partner. Or Chad Allen and his lover. It will be great to see this happen.

Rosie O'Donnell would do anything to keep her big head in the news.

I could care less about her marriage.

She had to the power, influence, pull and support to marry a long time ago if that's what she wanted to do.

I'm not impressed by her doing it now.

It's not binding anyway.

She had nothing to lose.

The End.

Ditto tsky29. She just wanted the publicity.

I don't know, I've always liked Rosie. Ever since "Stand-Up Spotlight" on VH1. Sure her yelling is obnoxious at times, but how can a gay woman in her position not want to stand up for the plight of other gays and lesbians?
Way to go Rosie!

That's quite true... but see, if we're standing up for the rights, we must not truly care about the cause. Sure, it's all publicity to us... don't you know that, chel?

Kris, I forgot my head...please forgive me. I forgot that lesbians and gay men only "acted" gay and only publicized their efforts for gay rights for the "show" of it! Silly me!

I can forgive you, chel... after all, that's what friends are for, right?
Ummmmmmmmm, unless being a dyke means that I just forgive you, to make it LOOK good on my part!

Get back to me, and let me know... okay?

Well you know Kris, if you forgive me, then it will look like you're just doing so to show that heteros and homosexuals can coexist in peace...therefore it MUST only be for show!

Damn... so, what choice do we have? I mean, I want to be like Rosie!!!

Speaking of Rosie... isn't she an incredible woman? She has done so much for kids, all over.
Her and Kelly are great mothers... and I'm just so glad that they "tied the knot"

Me too. I always knew she was family. I loved when she came down the steps after they were married and said "Peace and justice for all."

That was a great moment, in my opinion!!

Oh, outsider... a couple years before Rosie "came out" she was down in Florida, where she has a home. She was attending these basketballs games, and a bunch of my friends went, knowing that she was there. They were all wearing these speciality made t shirts that all said "Rosie... just come out" It was cute... and she blushed and smiled and waved at a lot of them.

I know. I used to watch Melissa's partner Tammy (I think is her name) on a really funny show called Popular. She is a really good actress, and extreamly beautiful. I was so happy to hear that they got together.

Ellen will be forever famous for the Toaster Oven thing.

Yes, and Tammy Lynn Michaels (Melissa's wife) is on The L Word... she does guest appearances on there.

Oh yeah... I loved when Ellen did that part on her show, with the toaster ovens.

Wish I had cable, I really like Tammy Lynn. She played this really evil girl on Popular. She was so funny though. I wonder if I can find the toaster oven thing on the net.
