I figure that lesser known musicians should be thankful for peer to peer networks like Kazaa sharing their music. The marjority of their target market would otherwise never know they existed without this free "marketing".

I agree.. in fact, I think it'd be cool if lesser known musicians could market themselves fully online without a need for a parent company to take them under their wing..

Just as there are independent film distributors, there are a plethora of independent music labels now.

Since the Internet makes a professional corporate identity out of anyone with more than a little time on their hands, there are certainly thousands upon thousands of additional musical artists out there pushing for the big contract.

In the end, these artists are promoting themselves (and would be stupid not to use services like Kazaa and Morpheus) and the scene has become so saturated that quality music can be difficult to find.
