Sirius' family tree is on a tapestry in the Black Mansion....

There was talk about how all the pure blood families inner-marry, so that they can keep their lines "pure." The Blacks are related to the Weasleys, and the Malfoys, etc...

Why weren't there more family names, that should have been VERY obvious and reconizable to Harry and Ron, from the house of Slytherin? They are filled with 'pure bloods.'

Why wasn't Professor Snape's name upon that Tapestry?
Is he pure blood?

Interesting topics! The Black family has been pureblood since 14th century. There must have been other Slytherin names on the tapestry, but Harry was too occupied with the *Lestrange* name to notice it.

But surely he would notice Professor Snape's name, if it was up there... so it's possible that either Snape is Muggle-born, or, what I think is more likely, only Snape's father wasn't pureblood. His mother could have been a pureblood witch... coming from a very respected family, but she married a Muggle-born, who, not being the best person you could imagine, slowly became frustrated about his lack of *wizarding blood*. So he started beating up his wife... that's why Snape, despite his Muggle blood, would be accepted in Voldemort's circle - Voldemort sort of understood him, having a similar family picture. Maybe Snape's father was put in jail after murdering his mother, and that would also explain Snape being such a dark, revenge-loving, *nasty* person.

On the other hand, his Muggle roots would have been a motive for Snape to think it over and become Dumbledore's spy.

Ummm... or something like that. :?:

I knew Maja would come up with some awesome ideas. She always does.

I think that Maja is on to something with Snapes father possibly being a half muggle. I think that he was so cruel, that that could be the reason for Snape changing sides.

WILD THEORY ALERT> I just came up with a theory. Voldemort wants his death eaters to be pure blood. So why was Snape not on the Tapestry? I think it is because he could be Sirius' half-brother! Think about it. Mrs. Black would not allow her husbands illegitimate child on the tapestry. Sirius would hate a kid who took his father's attention away.

J.K. Rowling quote from an interview when asked why Sirius sent Snape to the WIllow.
"because Sirius loathed Snape (and the feeling was entirely mutual). You'll find out more about this in due course."

Oh man... that's a GREAT theory, Sherry. That would really be something. Man, would that explain A LOT of things.

hmm could be, or even about snapes dad beating up his mother, maybe it was the other way around, maybe his father was a wizard and his mother was a muggle, maybe she just didnt understand the whole wizarding world thing, or maybe didnt like it at all, and that could have been why he was beating her too... just a thought... does anyone know snapes last name?
