This thread open to strange facts about the writing of LOTR. I just bought "Shadow of the Past". It tells the different drafts of the chapters in LOTR. So this thread can cover things that ALMOST were.

*Biblos birthday party was originally for his 70th
*Biblo was going to be married and have a son named Bingo in one of the earlier drafts

frodo's name was originally to be Bingo.
Treebeard was originally evil, as was Farmer Maggot.
3-4 characters were combined to make Pippin.

There is a Frodo, Bingo and Odo in one draft.

Merry's orginal name was Marmaduke, Sam was always Sam. Pippin is a combo of hobbits named frodo (before that name went to the main character), Odo, Fosco, Falco, and i think some more.

Very strange names. Who could like the name Bingo? I am so happy that name was lost.

Bingo Baggins- that sounds like the name of a clown. Plus I had a rabbit named Bingo, that never would have worked.

And how does everyone find out this cool info?

Did you know that Tolkien had no hand in the naming of the books. He didn't have a problem with the names except the Return of the King which he though gave the ending away.

That's interesting, Tiger. I like the names of the books. Except for Two Towers. What exactly are the two towers? Orthanc and Barad dur? Excuse my spelling.

Isn't it Minas Morgul and Barad Dur? I don't know!

I think the Two Towers are Orthanc and Barad-dur. As Saruman says in his voice-over in the Two Towers: "Who can now resist the might of Sauron and Saruman, the armies of Mordor and Isengard, and the union of the two towers..."

I might be slightly off in the quote, but I am pretty sure about the 'union of two towers' part.

In the books Saruman never said that, it was used to clear up the two towers problem.

What the two towers where was never cleared up. It could have been the tower of Minas Tirith, Orthanc, Barad-Dur, one of he three towers on tower hill outside the shire. That is why Tolkien wasn't to sure about the title with that either.

Did you know that Tolkien didn't finish writing the Silmarillion before he died and his son Christopher Tolkien put it together using the notes that his father had scribbled out.

Well, I was just quoting from the movie White Tiger.

It is very clear in the movies what the two tower were, Orthanc and Barad-Dur, which was what the people who changed the script slightly were trying to do, but for fanatic like me who like to read all Tolkiens books and like to know the history it still is uncertain.

Tolkien wanted to call it The War of the Ring

Yep that is what he wanted it to be called Misty but the publishers thought it was a bad title

That would have been a better title.

I think 'Return of the King' was the better title.

I don't know which one I like better, but Return of the King does knd of give away the ending. But some of my friends thought it meant Sauron would return They obviously dont know that much about Lotr

In my copies of LOTR it says that the Two Towers were Orthanc and Minas Morgul.

From the movies, Peter Jackson puts the Two Towers at Orthanc and Barad 'ur.

In the books, Tolkien is pretty explicit about the Two Towers. From the end of Fellowship:

"Here ends the first part of the history of the War of the Ring. The second part is called The Two Towers, since the events recounted in it are dominated by Orthanc , the citadel of Saruman, and the fortress of Minas Morgul that guards the secret entrance to Mordor"

The reason for this difference is simple. Using his artistic license, Jackson ends Frodo and Sam's journey in TTT before "The Crossroads", and so Minas Morgul does not factor in the story at all. I think Jackson postponed the encounter at Minas Morgul (w/the witch king and his army) because it fits better the overall flow of ROTK.

Also remember that Tolkien was never trying to tell 3 separate and autonomous stories - they flow from one into another, without resolution in some cases, and were only separated later for publishing reasons. Peter Jackson had to represent Tolkien's flow, but also bring some resolution to each movie. I think this was Jackson's biggest challenge, and biggest success.
