Dolores Umbridge. As I sat up reading OOP for the 6th time , I began to wonder about the true allegiance of the Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Toad like woman with a massive hatred for non-humans. She works for the Ministry of Magic, but do we really know whos side she is on? Things that suggest she is possibly on Voldemorts side:

*sent dementors to attack Harry without Ministry consent
*enjoyed punishing students with her quill
*attempted to perform the Cruciatus Curse on students-note that this is one of the unforgivable curses.
*brought aurors to attack Hagrid
*had spies in the Hogs Head -not a very savory place, and not a very nice person who did the spying.

Personally, and I've said this since day one... Umbridge isn't on our side.
I think that she was sent in, possibly by Voldemort, to change things.
She did everything she could to destroy Harry... and I didn't see here as being on the side of the Ministry.
She went behind Fudge's back (as far as we know). Could Fudge be a 'double agent'?

I too believe that nasty old Dolores is a Voldemort supporter. She has too many classic signs such as hating half breeds.
A point to ponder. Dolores is unable to undo all the things that Fred and George sent after her. Yet, the other teachers had no problem setting things to right. Not a strong witch. but I bet her breath is strong.

Fudge, I do think that he is after the Goblins and becoming more and more power hungry. At this time, I don't think that he is a Voldemort supporter, but I do believe that he is ripe for some blackmail by Voldemort. Keep in mind that Lucius Malfoy is close to Fudge and Voldemort. Fudge could also be controlled in the future by the I Curse. He does not appear to be a strong wizard.

You're right... she couldn't break the spells that the Twins set off.
Hmmmmm... never thought of that. Perhaps she's a 'minor' witch, or she has powers elsewhere... such as, deadly breath!

What if Umbridge isn't a Voldemort supporter, but she believes that his side is the one that will win, and will side that way?

How did she have control over the Dementors? Can anyone from the MoM do that? Or, just high officials, etc...?

I think she as the Under Secretary told them to go after Harry. The Ministry controls the Dementors, sorry, did control them. So, it would not seem out of the ordinary for the Under Secretary to send out an order to get someone.

Have you noticed that the word play in the book keeps using "toad" and "stubby or short fingers" when they talk about her. I wonder what it all means.

Well, maybe she's got toad like powers?
I don't think that JKR is just saying that... especially when it's something said, over and over.

Well, okay... so the Ministry controlled them.
Don't you think that they would have KNOWN that she did that?
I wonder if Harry talked to Dumbledore about this, and if Fudge will be informed!

She said that Fudge did not know. She mentioned that when she caught Harry and co. in her office trying to contact Grimmauld Place to see if Sirius was there or not. Toads, there just has to be something. Mundungus thought that they were valuable enought to steal them. Very odd. The same with Trevor always running away, Ron having frog spawn, Lily having frog spawn. Frogs good? Toads bad? We just do not know yet. NOTHING with Dolores can be good.

I too agree that Umbridge is a Voldemort supporter and that she is passing information to Voldemort.I think we'll hear more about Umbridge in the 6th book.

Maybe Umbridge is no a strong witch, maybe the twins magic is too advance!

You know what, Voldemort's quite picky when it comes to Death Eaters. He only accepts the best, and I don't think Umbridge's among them. Voldemort's servants are all, *being objective*, powerful wizards. He accepted Pettigrew only because he needed him. He could have picked many stronger wizards from the Ministry for this job, than Umbridge. Plus, Sirius is pretty sure she's not Voldemort's spy/whatever. Umbridge's just impersoning the attitude of a big part of wizarding world towards Harry's and Dumbledore's news about Voldemort's return. Just remember -- in the moments of her greatest enthusiasm/madness throughout the book, she never mentioned Voldemort namely nor in any other way, she was only mentioning the Ministry and Fudge all the bloody time. Surely it could just be cunning, but I think it's sincere. She's not Voldemort's spy... although her actions help Voldemort a lot.

Maybe she's here so Harry would realise that not all the evil in his life comes from Voldemort (and the consequences of his actions). There are other people who can make his life miserable! *smiles sarcastically in a dark teenage mood*

I think Umbridge is just an idiot.

...wait, that wasn't the question, was it?

Oh well, my opinion still stands!

It would be interesting to see whether or not she makes a significant reappearance in either of the next two books. I for one hope she will, as I don't think her character got the closure it deserved. The point at which she got my attention was when Harry had that moment in which he believed she could have been Voldemort. However, after learning that this was not the case, her sub-plot became somewhat of an anti-climax. I thought having Voldemort so close to Harry without him realising it or being able to do anything about it would have been far more suspenseful than her just being a disgruntled old lady. I hope she is on Voldemort's side, because otherwise her motives for causing Hogwarts so much trouble are somewhat vague. Would any other ministry member go to the lengths she went to?

See, I agree with Mike. I think that the lengths that she went to speak a lot about her character. She is very evil. I also think that she should be suspect because she uses very dodgy people as her spies.
