Well...the top three...Matt, Fantasia, and Diana..

Well my personal number one and two picks were Fantasia and Diana...(as stated on the other thread)

Im so HAPPY Fantasia made it through...I still think she was the best of all of them last night (IMO).

AND Im really happy Diana made it through....I just thought her performance was top level especially with the fact that she was first, which can be a scary thing!

So Im two for two in the top two....Im really happy my two fav's made it through!!

We voted for Diana, so we are glad she is in the top two. She has a good voice, that's for sure.

An AMAZINGLY great voice! I would have never thought she could belt out a tune like that! I was VERY impressed!

That Matt and Diana thing was NERVE WRACKING!!! I couldnt stand it! I was like tell me already who is going!

Diana was my favorite of those 8. I liked Fantasia and her voice, I can do without the hairdo though. A little to short for my taste.

Yeah, they drew that out a little to much between Diana and Matt. They always do that, but it seemed like they went overboard tonight.

TOTALLY overboard...especially when I thought they were going to announce it and then went to ANOTHER commercial break...and inbetween there had to show other contestants from next weeks show.

They need to stop making us wait...because personally I would have liked to have heard from the judges and we never heard from them again.

I didn't do so badly myself ... I said that Diana & Fantasia would be put throughs and that I was hopeful for Matt & Jenn as Wildcards .... so ... sorry Katie fans , but I picked the top Four (4) vote getters

IMO, Diana far surpassed Fantasia when they sang tonight. Fantasia swallows words and notes.

So ... I think Matt will be back ( maybe Jenn too ) and unless she stumbles terribly, Diana will outlast Fantasia on the show.

More later.

Thats true...but I also dont think she was really prepared to sing tonight, and just being announced that she was moving on she didnt really get the chance to let it sink in...I think they caught her off guard...whereas the other two understood that they would be asked to sing knowing that she had too.

You think so ? I kind of presumed they have watched the show and that's what they've always done isn't it ? And I guess I thought they prepped them pre-show for the possibility that they would have to sing. Hmmmmm.

I must admit though, little Diana is certainly very poised and confident for someone so young. I hope the fact that she must still be in school ... right ? ... doesn't end up causing her performances to suffer.

Last year, young Carmen was such a total acne-laden wreck I felt sorry for her !

BTW, I personally liked Jennifer better than Katie, but I'll also admit to being a little surprised that she got more votes than Katie. Matt being Top 3 didn't really surprise me.

I am agravated that they allow Simon to comment on the top 2 in the group before the performance show is even aired ... and that the judges continue to put so much influential spin on the outcome.

Every single judging comment should be less useless praise and opinionated criticism and more speciic suggestions for improvement. Just my opinion.

I agree...but I dont know about the school thing though....she probably has a tutor or something with her..maybe?

She was horrible (as Simon would say! )

I just presumed that they removed them from the bottom (count) up tonight.

Elimination order was Marque, Ashley, Erskine, which made sense to me ... and then Katie, Jenn) They did eliminate Katie rather unceremoniously, and left Jenn and Matt as the last 2 ... one stays/one goes combo. I am presuming they did it that way tonight because these 2 had the most voting fans waiting anxiously for the "verdict".

Well ... I certainly am presumptuous

I am very happy that Diana is going through. She has an awesome voice.

Fantasia is the new Ruben. She is the one the judges will push onto the public, trying to make her the idol. We need to keep a close eye on the judges comments from now on.

Well, just watched the show... and I wasn't very surprised by the outcome.
Here's my feelings... and Sherry and I have been instant messaging throughout the show:

I think that there is "something" going on with how the winners are going forward.
I don't know if the producers have some 'hidden' system through the phone lines, like keeping certain lines busy, so that you can't get through... and stacking the deck for the two they DO want to go through.

Anyway... there is something about Diana's voice, and I don't know what it is. It bothers me, and I wish that I could pin point what it is. Maybe it's that her voice isn't what I expect from that 'package.'

The judges have made up their minds... Simon said that Fanatacia will be the American Idol. Do you all agree????

Also... I think that I was shocked that Katie wasn't in the top three.

I dont remember him saying that she will be the next American Idol...he said she is destined to be a star and didnt need American idol to do that....

I dont agree with it now...but I think like Fuscia said...its just a matter of hearing what the judges say about her in the final 12.

So was I...I do believe, at least for me, that she was better than Matt....but I chalk it up to all the teenage girls calling in because he is so good looking....

I think he got there more so based on his looks and stage presence and not by voice....BUT thats just my opinion....he didnt do much for me last night when he sang...(voice-wise)

Tonight... before they started talking to the contestants, they asked the judges who they each picked as the two who will go through. I think that they were asked this before the results were called in. I don't know....

Anyway... Simon did say Diana and Fantasia... and that she's going to be the winner.

Congratulations to Fantasia and Diana.

I'm disappointed that Katie didn't make it but I knew that Fantasia deserved to get a seat in the Top 12. I would have put Katie and Fantasia through and given Diana the Wild Card seat.

I just don't understand how Matt could garner more votes than Katie. I agree with Randy on Matt's performance, "It just wasn't good enough for me, Dude."

Marque had the least followed by Ashley, Erskine, Katie, Jennifer and then Matt.

Yeah, the performance show is obviously taped well before it actually airs on Tuesday nights. When Simon touted Fantasia and Diana during his Ryan Seacrest ON AIR show appearance Tuesday afternoon, I figured that he was telling us that he had already seen the performances (the ones we would see a few hours later) and that he knew the ones he wanted to put through to the Top 12.

I didn't care for that either.

Ever heard of LeAnn Rimes? She turned pro several years younger than Diana is now. You should have heard LeAnn sing when she was about 14. Absolutely amazing to hear that big voice coming out of that little girl. And she was a cool, calm and collected performer at that young age, too.

Oh, and a long time ago, back when I was a pup, there was a young lady named Brenda Lee. Remember? Powerful voice and confident performer, even when she was still a teenager.

Oh, and going back even farther, wasn't Judy Garland just a teenager when she made The Wizard of Oz?

I don't think age should be a consideration but the Judges certainly took note of it back during the first auditions. It seemed like every time a 16-year old performed, they commented on their age. That ticked me off.

If they don't want 16-year olds in the competition, then make the Rules say that all contestants must be at least 18. But, if you're going to allow 16-year olds to compete, then don't turn around and criticize them for being too young. Arrgh!

And for the record... I've loved LeAnn Rimes since I heard the first note she sang.
That girl has come a LONNNNNG way and her vocals are even better now, 7 years later.

What is with this Fantasia mania? You have got to be kidding me? I think she has tremendous command of the stage (great stage presence), a unique voice, but she is really one of the worst singers. Idol started off to be a singing contest, finding the best singers(with the best voice qualities). I am not a Macy Grey fan and she sounds like macy, but my contention has always been that macy grey can't sing. She has a unique style but voice quality? I think the idol judges sold fantasia, (I can't wait til she tries to sing a ballad with that voice).
Now Diana, on the other hand I thought was excellent on that night and by going first, she set the bar. I don't think Matt was the best of the men that night but I think the voters went with the tall, slender american image.
The two best voices on that night by far diana and jennifer, but so many of the viewers are influenced by the judges comments and reactions that they don't make thier own choices. Now I hope the next round of contestants get a better
shake from the voters and not the judges. They sold fantasia's performance to america (and we bought it).

Okay here is the exchange between mystic and myself ... repeating and commenting here for your convenience and clarification:

mystic asked:

How do you know she got more votes than Katie? I must have missed that....did they say that?

obf responded:

I just presumed that they removed them from the bottom (count) up tonight.

Elimination order was Marque, Ashley, Erskine, which made sense to me ... and then Katie, Jenn) They did eliminate Katie rather unceremoniously, and left Jenn and Matt as the last 2 ... one stays/one goes combo.
I am presuming they did it that way tonight because these 2 had the most voting fans waiting anxiously for the "verdict".

Well ... I certainly am presumptuous.

okay ... I do believe that is how they did it on the 2/11 results show. This is my opinion as it made sense to me, and is not to say this is the way they will do it EVERY time.

Yes, they do SEAT them in a somewhat random order, but the randomness of it is clearly designed to allow Seacrest to try to create maximum suspense.

They will change it up some each time, have him move from the top row of seating to the bottom, but always try to make you guess which of the 2 or 3 in the groupings are the keepers or being eliminated.

When the Final 12 are set, they will of course change it to keeping you guessing about who the bottom 3 on the hot seat will be and stretch it all out until they eliminate one of them.

So ... on 2/11 ... the elimination order as related to bottom up vote counts made sense to me. I felt it safe to presume that leaving Matt and Jenn means THEY the producers, knew they had the most interested fans waiting in suspense.

That's how it looked to me, ... and to my pal, scout ... it is absolutely valid. You have the analyses and clipboard and I have my presumtuous and valid OPINION

Oldbutafan ..............

Right. I understand. It was your opinion. You were not stating it as a definite fact that the seating order was assigned based on the voting results. Just as my "analyses and clipboard" are really only props to support my own opinions.

Okay, with that established and agreed to, do you know anywhere that the actual vote tallies might be obtained? The only real number that I heard was when Seacrest announced that Fantasia had gotten about 23% of the "more than 20 million" votes.

I'd be really interested in seeing the breakdown percentages for each contestant; not only to clarify the seating position question but also because I want to know how close was the tally among Diana, Matt and Katie.

By the way, do you also find it interesting that there are about 30 million viewers for each Performance show yet only about 20 million votes were phoned in? We know that many voters dial and redial to cast multiple votes for their favorite contestants (I certainly did) so, presumably, the number of individual voters might be as low as a million or two.

For the sake of arguement, let's say that there are only two million real people out there voting. That means that less than 7% of the audience who saw the Performance show is controlling the fate of the contestants.

Just some thoughts . . .

See I like the difference in her voice...Im getting tired of listening to the "same" person sing....I mean picking the same "type" of voice every year gets boring. (IMO)

I think the idol judges sold fantasia,

They may have to a point....but I liked her just because..they cant sell me on anyone...I like who I like...and not because they tell me too..I liked her from the get go of the song.

(I can't wait til she tries to sing a ballad with that voice).

I have to admit..that might be a problem for her.

WE? I didnt buy anything...I liked these two before the judges said anything at all...so for me...I dont buy it just because people say something...if someone can influence someone else that much...thats bad!

My opinion was that they eliminated from the bottom (count) up. But the seating order HAS been assigned to allow Seacrest to easily move to create suspense between 2 or 3 kids and this IS based on the voting results. But if someone is on the top or bottom row, or whom they are seated next to makes a difference only insofar as how he pairs the keepers and the go-homes. I hope that makes sense. Watch for that next week.

Just as my "analyses and clipboard" are really only props to support my own opinions.

I think your methods and analyses are great. I, however, would probably lose my clipboard My opinion was based on observation and a few notes as memory joggers.

Okay, with that established and agreed to, do you know anywhere that the actual vote tallies might be obtained?

I don't, but I will look around. I guess the idolonfox site doesn't post them ? I don't remember ever seeing an actual tally.

The only real number that I heard was when Seacrest announced that Fantasia had gotten about 23% of the "more than 20 million" votes.

Indicating that the other 77% was split between 7 other people. I thought he said 11 Million people voted ?

I'd be really interested in seeing the breakdown percentages for each contestant; not only to clarify the seating position question but also because I want to know how close was the tally among Diana, Matt and Katie.

I doubt that they will eliminate from the bottom up every time or do it exactly the same, or we'd figure it out before Ryan told us. Now that I think about it, I do not think that an accurate tally is around ... because if they put actual counts or percentages up from week to week, someone would be calculating who "should" win based on those figures. I'll look anyway ... but I want credit in your book.

Just some thoughts . . .

As said, I thought I heard 11 Million, but the number doesn't really matter ... you are correct anyway about the control factor which I never thought about, and that the total vote count is really skewed by the crazed re-dialing fans

You're right (as usual)! I just rewound the tape and checked it. Ryan said, "Eleven-and-a-half million" people voted.

I should have written that down on my clipboard . . .

What can I say?

You honor me but I am nothing without my clipboard.

With Obaf to keep me honest, how can I fail?

http://pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/19.gif Congrats. (Just subtract 899 and it works for your 101st post)

I might have to eat crow down the road, but I don't think Fantasia is going to make it that far. IMO there were only 3 good singers in that group. (Diana, Katie and Fantasia)

When they get in the tough competition, Fantasia won't be able to compete. (What do I know, she will probably win the whole thing.)

Thanks for the congrats, Whidden.

I agree with you about Fantasia's future. I don't think that there's any way she will WIN this thing. But I've been wrong before. Who knows.

Fantasia and Diana were on Seacrest's ON AIR show today but I only caught about four minutes of their appearance. No big news but a couple of tidbits to share:

1) Fantasia's "BoBo Dance" is something she learned at church. She was in the choir and they used to dance like that as they did their procession into the church for services. They didn't have a name for it then. She named it the "Bo Bo Dance" when she started using it in her singing performance.

2) Diana appeared on another young talent search program a few years ago. She credits that experience with preparing her for American Idol. She didn't say whether she actually won the competition but they showed a clip and she looked like she might well have done that. She was younger then but she already had that big voice and lots of energy.

They said that both Katie and Erskine were crying after the Results show last night.
