Ok... I will start this by asking a question about the LOTR trilogy. You see if you can answer the question, but DO NOT READ THE BOOKS OR WATCH THE MOVIES TO FIND THE ANSWER! This has to be purely from memory. Once you post your answer, wait fr conformation that it is correct and then you can post your own question....and so it begins....

The doors of Durin, Lord of Moria, Speak, friend, and enter.

I know that one by heart thanks to the movie.

Okay... what is the Elvish name of the song sung by Galadriel upon the parting of the company from Lothlorien? And what is the english translation?

Reply To this Message

what?! ok, just to clarify, the person asking the question has to know the answer from memory as well. and thats alot of stuff to have to know by memory!...geez...i don't even know the song's name (if it has one) much less its translation word for word....hmmm....

Reply To this Message

I don't even recall a song, just Galadrial's VO, and maybe a few notes of Howard Shore...

So what is the answer Neo?

I just cheated and looked it up in the book. There is no way anyone knows that by heart. Still love ya though, Neo!

Well since we've abandoned Neo's question, I'll give the answer. I did cheat.

Ai! laurie lantar lassi surinen,
yeni unotime ve ramar aldaron!
Yeni ve linte yuldar avanier
mi oromardi lisse-miruvoreva
Andune pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
omaryo airetari-lirinen.

Si man i yulma nin enquantuva?

Si vanwa na, Romello vanwa, Valimar!

Namarie! Nai hiuvalye Valimar.
Nai elye hiruva. Namarie!

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind, long years numberless as the wings of trees! The years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly. Who now shall refill the cup for me? For now the Kindler, Varda, The Queen of the Stars, from Mount Everwhite has upliftd her hands like clouds, and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country dardkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar! Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar. Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!

The only other Dunedain I know apart from Aragorn is Imrahil, who is at the Council of Elrond. I don't know if he is the one who died at Pellanor, but I thought I'd guess all the same...

In the Fellowship of the Ring, what did Galadriel give to Aragorn as the fellowship was about to leave Lorien?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Erm... In the book it was the Evenstar, not sure about the film

Reply To this Message

Posted by: adityamahesh

I thought Arwen gave the Evenstar to Aragorn.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Chestnutter

Yes adityamahesh, Galadriel did not give Aragorn the Evenstar, it was Arwen. (unless my memory is failing me!)

Reply To this Message

Posted by: No Comment

Didn't Galadriel say something along the lines of, "I cannot give you anything greater than the gift you already have."?

I don't think that Galadriel gave Aragorn anything, she just remarked about the Evenstar, which was given to him by Arwen.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

That was in the movie, I think that Galadriel did give something to Aragorn...I cant remember though, I should

Reply To this Message

Yeah, that was in the movie, let me go do some research, I haven't read Fellowship in a while.

Reply To this Message

Yeah, I'm talking about in the book. Sorry, should have made that clear in my first post!

I haven't posted in this forum for a while, so my reply to these is very much belated. But to clarify, because I do not believe I was done justice in reference to this question, I was not asking for the english translation to the entire song, just the NAME of the song and the ENGLISH TRANSLATION of that name.

And so in reply I answer my own question - the song is entitled Namarie, which translates to farewell.

In addition, I did know that by heart. I also thought this thread was based on the book, not on the movie, in which the song was not featured.
