Since Sirius Black is our character of the month, we should devote a thread to his animagus form. Why a big black dog? Was it solely to keep Lupin under control when he was a werewolf? Did it reflect aspects of his personality?

Well I think it's mainly inkeeping with the fact that Sirius (the star) is also knows as 'the dog star'. Perhaps Rowling was just showing off her knowledge of astronomy.

I think one of the reasons that he chose a dog form was because they are a common animal. You wouldn't find it strange to see a dog walking down the street.

Ms. Rowling's actually said in an interview that the animal chooses the wizard and that a person's animagus form is best suited to their personality.
