As for the Wild Card, they only brought people back last year that made it to the 32 level-I think. | | Reply To this Message

I'm sure you're right, KJ. The producers of American Idol (two of whom are also Judges) know that they have enough talent in the pool (the Final 32) to find a winner who is malleable. Why would they want to let in someone they suspect will become a real pain-in-the-ass to work with over the next couple of years?
The AI contest is a stacked deck. Although I'm sure that the producers realize that the eventual winner might turn out to be someone who was not their preferred Number One pick, I also know that it will be someone who was very near to the top of their list.
They have a good idea -- right now -- who they want to win in each of the next four weeks. They already know a lot more about each of the Final 32 contestants than we, the audience, will ever know.
I'm sure that when the Judges made the final cut in January and selected the Final 32, they constructed a list, a very specific list, with their favorite 6 or 8 contestants at the top. Then they subdivided the Final 32 list into groups of 8, making sure that each group contained a couple of their favorites from the top of the list. The rest of the contestants in each group were selected to fail when compared against the "best" in their group.
The audience might think that American Idol is a contest where they get to pick the winner and, up to a point, they'd be right. But they might not realize that the "winner" they eventually pick has pretty much already been decided. In other words, Simon and Randy already know that the eventual winner will be one of the 6 or 8 people at the top of their list right now.
American Idol is, first and foremost, a BUSINESS venture. The decisions that have been made and that will continue to be made will be in the best interests of the Producers of the show. If the audience is happy with the results, so much the better, but that fact is not the primary concern.
The real goal of the show is to produce a "marketable product" for the entertainment industry, an American Idol who will be able to generate a continuing revenue stream. That's the job description in a nutshell.
Temperamental prima donas need not apply.

scout ... you DID watch AI2 last season, right ?
As they say, been there done that.
Case in point, Clay, Ruben and Kim were all in the same group of 8 and Clay got beaten out by Ruben and Kim.
They KNEW Clay and Ruben were the ticket ... Kim may have been a slight surprise ... They knew by the votes after that group of 8 that Clay would overwhelmingly be America's choice in the wildcard show.
Interesting that these 3 ended up to be the Final 3 ... no ?
I firmly believe that the final outcome of AI2 worked out for the best for the PRODUCERS as well as the performers. Again, an interesting turn of events.
So ... as for Michael, if it turns out that the judges can assemble the wildcards any way they want ... Michael will be back.

Does anyone remember if Carmen was one of the 32 last year ? For some reason I thought not, and that they said they picked her along with a few others because they "watched tapes" and saw something they missed.

| Posted by: oldbutafan | | I KNEW I remembered some sort of announced "twist" regarding the Wildcards !
Here is an edited excerpt from a recap regarding the AI2 wildcard show/process that was posted on reality news:
.....................
The judges have determined who was worthy of a second chance at becoming the new American Idol. The biggest surprise of the season was that Clay Aiken hasn't advanced already. ...
This is it! This is the Wildcard Round, the round that Simon predicted would blow all others away! One would have to consider the process of choosing this year's wildcards a gamble.
The fact that the judges dug way deep, including two contestants cut at the first Hollywood, makes it impossible to handicap ...
... Did the gamble pay off? Did those who slipped between the cracks deserve the slippage?
Ryan welcomes us to the show. He jumps right to it, Simon what is the twist? Simon says the twist is... (drum roll)...
... that the round of 10 is now a round of 12! The judges will choose three performers, and America will decide on the fourth!
Randy says that everyone is even and they will be judged on what they do tonight. (And tonight, they had music track to sing to, and not just a piano accompaniment. Maybe that is another experiment that is gone forever.)
Foul! I have several disagreements with this.
One: America already knows five of these folks, they saw them perform, and if they improve, America is more apt to vote for them rather than the four we haven't seen in awhile/ever.
Two: the five who performed before have the advantage that they have already been through this. They've been through the blocking, worked with the vocal coach, dealt with the cameras, the pressure, the judges eyes, the fact that they are singing to an empty studio... all of these things are quite jarring the first time you have to do them.
Three: the pressure is more intense for the four that were picked from oblivion, because they were selected based on what the judges remembered, not what they just saw... and the memory is fallible. So, if they come on and are ordinary, the critiques from the judges will be worse because it looks like you blew it.
.................
So ... if they use the same criteria as last season ... "digging deep" ... we could very well see Michael and/or others back.
Did the gamble pay off ? Clay was a Top 32 wildcard who made it far. As for those who were plucked from oblivian ... they have returned to their rightful places.
However ... the producers are um ... literally and figuratively running the show, and can do what they want. | | Reply To this Message

OBAF .........
I missed a couple of last season's shows (and a couple in the first season) due to other obligations, so I don't remember all the blow-by-blow results.
One of the things I do remember is that Simon was really put out with the American voting audience on one of the shows. I believe that was the show where Kim was voted in over Clay but I'm not absolutely positive that was the one.
I remember Simon getting all huffy and saying, "Well, the audience was wrong then!" but I don't really remember all the details of that situation. Do you remember?
Kim was definitely a surprise to them, I'm sure. But that's why they have a Wild Card round in the format, so that they have a chance to correct any "mistakes" that the audience might make by voting the wrong candidate(s) in or out.
I'm sure that the Producers are very happy with Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken and not-at-all disappointed with Ruben Studdard but what about Justin Guarini? After the disasterous Justin Loves Kelly movie, he all but disappeared.
I remember an incident that involved him during the first season . . . it happened well into the finals. Simon gave him a couple of the usual acerbic comments after his performance and Justin lipped back with something like, "Let's let the audience decide, those are the votes that count, not yours." Boy, was that dumb, Dumb, DUMB!
Fortunately for him, the audience did vote to keep him (barely) over first season resident bimbo "Ryan Starr". I wonder if Simon (and the other producers) regret that he remained to be Runner-Up?
They tweaked the rules a little bit after that first season and they will continue to refine the format and contestant qualifications as the seasons progress. Their aim being to get from the first pre-auditions to the final crowning of The Winner with as smooth a journey as possible.

For people interested, I found a recent article online about Michael, and about his father's current health condition. Michael Keown article |
Hica thanks for the link ... I had no idea his Dad was sick. That's sad.
Here's the text of the short article hica posted
.......................
Idol´ contestant attends to reality
Local "American Idol" entry Michael Keown is down but not necessarily out.
While a national TV audience tuned in to see if Keown and others could survive Wednesday's episode of the Fox show, the 19-year-old was facing a far more serious reality.
Keown watched the show at the hospital bedside of his father, Michael Sr., who suffered a third stroke a week ago.
His spirits boosted, the senior Keown, who could hear the show but was unable to see it because of vision problems, told his son,
"You're a star."
"He can understand everything," said the junior Keown, pronounced cowan, who has known since October that he didn't make the cut to 32.
A confidentiality clause prohibited contestants from revealing any developments.
Based on how he was edited into so much of Wednesday's episode, he's holding out hope for new life. Back in October, judge Simon Cowell offered rare high praise for Keown's rendition of "Unchained Melody."
"They kind of left the door open for me. There could be a twist, you never know," said the 2002 graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies Performing and Visual Arts.
A second local participant, Erskine Walcott, 24, made it to the round of 32.

| Posted by: hica19 | | Does anyone happen to still have the Feb. 10 issue of the National Enquierer? There is this pretty lenghthy interview article about Michael Keown (before he got cut) that talks about his father and his quest in American Idol. I read the article because someone on another messageboard typed it out as a post, but she didn't have a scanner, and wasn't able to show the pics of Michael and his father. So if anyone has that issue and has a scanner, could you possibly post the pics?
For people who haven't read the article yet, here it its. It's longer and more in depth than the article I previously posted.
Michael Keown has a special motivation in his bid to win "American Idol 3" and the $1 million that goes with it- he wants to share the prize with his family allowing his ailing father to retire. "I'm determined to win the title this season- as a way of saying thank you to my family for everything they've done for me," Michael told the ENQUIER in an exclusive interview. "That is the greatest gift I could ever give them. I also want that $1 million prize to make sure my father will always be taken care of. He's had a lot of complications from diabetes. A few years ago he had half of his right foot amputated and a few months ago doctors had to remove half of the left one too. To make matters worse, while recovering from the amputation of his left foot, he suffered two strokes. The stroeks left him with a slight numbness in the left side of his body, and he has to get around in a wheelchair until his left foot heals and he can learn to walk again. But in spite of everything my dads gone through, he's doing great! His spirits are good, he's working from home and his health is showing signs of improvement. He's a tough ol' guy and I love him like crazy." Michael also points out that he never would even of tried out for "Idol" if his family hadn't pushed him. One of his cousins had heard the auditions were going to be held in New York the same time he was traveling through to vacation in St. THomas. After repeated urging from family members, he agreed to stop in New York for a few days. "As soon as the plane landed, I went directly to the audition. Though it wasn't scheduled to begin for three days, there was already a line of several hundred people on the street. I wound up sleeping there on the sidewalk just waiting for almost three days. Fortunately I made friends with someone staying in a nearby hotel and I was able to take a shower before my audition." When the audition finally came, Michael sang the Rightious Brother's "Unchained Melody". Everybody was stunned at how good he did and he won the trip to Hollywood and the opportunity to be crowned the third "American Idol". "Now the real competition starts" says Michael" and as I see it my voice will only carry me so far through the process- it's the love and support of my family that will give me the real edge to win, and I'm absolutely determined to win- bringing home the title and the prize money is the very best way I know of to thank my family for everything they've done for me."
Too bad things didn't really work out for him | | Reply To this Message

It's really sad that since that article he has been cut, and his father had yet another, 3rd stroke.

Now let's just hope that Michael's Dad gets MUCH better, that they DO bring Michael back, and that Michael brings some humility with him. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: jess_c | | Hi I'm from Australia. It's the non-ratings season in Australia at the moment
(being our long hot summer holidays and all) and so one of our local networks is beginning to air American Idol. First of all, I'd like to say that I personally thought the whole airing of American Idol on our television was a pretty stupid idea, but that is until I saw Michael Keown. Due to this very VERY handsome boy I have spent the last couple of weeks scouring the internet on ANYTHING I could find!
I couldn't believe this boy didn't get through; he had a voice like honey and looks to match. Although I admit I didn't like the way AI3 editors showed his personality very much, he came off too cocky and arrogant, but I'm going to believe that this was just editing, because a lot of the contestants were saying the same things as he did, it's just they aired Michael’s remarks more often. As you can tell from the article what the media want to convey to the public depends on the heavy editing. In AI3, Michael comes off as arrogant, conceited and full of it, yet in that article above he's portrayed as a caring, loving, and to some extent, humble kind of guy.
I REALLY hope he gets through to be a Wildcard, the judges have to be crazy if he doesn't as this is bound to make the ratings go through the roof!
And please, PLEASE if anybody has any pictures, information (profile and stuff), news etc of Michael AT ALL, can you please send them to me??? Thank you!

I tried all I can to find a video of his MTV performance, but couldn't find it. Us to big Michael fans. If we couldn't find anything about him, then no one could lol. I also have all the AI videos that have him on it, except the show in which he got cut. It was just too depressing for me to watch. But I have both the video and the audio of his audition, the audio to his original song, and also the audio to his group song. I really don't know if he will be back for wildcards. I'm just really hoping he will. But if not, I'm sure I'll see him again in the future. He has just too much talent to go to waste. You should also become a member of the idolforums messageboard at <competitive forum link removed> I started a Michael fanclub there. Already there are 23 memembers, and I'm sure that there are a lot of other Michael fans who just haven't come across it yet.

| Posted by: hica19 | | Well there could be other words, but I just couldn't think of any others at that moment except "honey smooth". I was just trying to think of a word that both describes his voice and his looks. I did not want to put in the words such as "hot" or "handsome" because that would only describe his looks, and I don't want people to think I only like him only for his looks. I mean the really big part in this is his voice also. | | Reply To this Message

I thought that Clay didn't make the final 32, but now that I think about it, I do remember him saying that he was in one of the Groups with Kimberly Locke, so I guess you're right. As far as I am concerned they could call back the 6 people from Group that didn't make it through. Group 1 was good.

Well, yes and no . . .
Season One didn't have a Wild Card show in the format that we have today, but it did have a Wild Card show, where a group of performers who had been eliminated from earlier shows were invited back and asked to perform again for the Judges. Then the Judges chose the Wild Card and he (R.J.) was put into the Final 10.
Here's a bit of text I lifted out of the Season One Recap Archives on the American Idol site:

After the dust finally settled, Christina, Nikki and EJay were moving on. That's right, EJay. EJay wasn't even on the show until this episode, as it was revealed that Delano was slightly over the age limit. By five years. Ooh. Just missed. So EJay flies into town, sings and moves into the final ten. Whirlwind journey!
At this point, we had nine, but we needed ten, so the Wild Card show was on deck. Kelli Glover, Chris Aaron, Alexis, Angela Peel and RJ were all invited back by special request of the Judges Panel. Meaning the other sixteen kids from the competition had crossed the realm into "forgotten." Think I'm lying? All right. Tell me what Tanesha looks like.
The judges obviously felt bad enough to bring RJ back for one more chance, and beyond that, they felt bad enough to personally escort him into the finals. At this point, we had done it! We whittled thirty to ten. Now, we had to whittle ten to one. The one! The AMERICAN IDOL! Oh my God! Whooooooo!
|
BTW, R.J. Helton, the Wild Card seed in Season One, made it to fifth place before being voted off.

I thought that Clay didn't make the final 32, but now that I think about it, I do remember him saying that he was in one of the Groups with Kimberly Locke, so I guess you're right. As far as I am concerned they could call back the 6 people from Group that didn't make it through. Group 1 was good. |
cheetah ! Hi good to see you again ... don't be such a stranger !
Clay was definitely Top 32 and Ruben and Kim Locke beat him out for the Top 2 spots. He sang on the Wildcard show and was America's choice.
Anyway ... glad you are back.

Season One didn't even have a Wild Card Show. It was introduced in Season 2. |
old_scout already answered this and as you know they changed the format for season 2, that is:
Season 1 had:
Top 30/Final 10/
1 Wildcard
Season 2 had:
Top 32/Final 12/
4 Wildcards
Season 3 has/will have:
Top 32/Final 12/
4 Wildcards
But, they have changed and put a twist in the Wildcard Process/Structure again for Season 3.
See the thread titled
"Wildcards, the process and our picks"
Post #40 has a simplified explanation.

Yes ... believe it or not I am not as stooooooopid as I act See Post #45 immediately preceeding, where Wildcard discussion is refered/redirected to Wildcard thread.
The fact that so many people like Michael Keown and want to see him come back as a Wildcard was bound to blow things towards a topic drift .
hica ... I think I read that you and jess_c are each missing one ( different ) tape of Michael's auditions. You might consider making a trade !

| Posted by: jess_c | | Hica has waaaay more stuff than I do on Michael, I did download the audio on his first audition and I'm planning on dowload the vidoe to it as well.
But I can up one on the obsessiveness that is Michael.... I went and edited my AI3 tapes so that I put all my Michael segments onto one tape. I even put in shots where he's not actually the one singing or talking but he's in the background. hehe. It's not that long, only around 15 to 20 minutes long. I keep swearing at my television cos I'm trying to work out hy I can transfer my digital camera images to video yet can't transfer my viedo imags to my digital camera....
And Hica, I agree, honey-smooth desribes Michael in everyway. Most other people like Alan Ritchonson (or whatever his name is) cos he's hot, but with Michael, it's not just about looks, it's about how his voice just makes you ....mmmm..... mmmelllllttttt.... hehehe | | Reply To this Message

I do have all the videos that include Michael, except the Feb. 4 episode. I did download it, but then I deleted it because it was just too depressing for me to watch. That's about all I have, except for a few articles about him. Lol. Whenever there's a celebrity or someone I really like, I always tend to find out as much info about them as I can. Then I remember it really easily. You should have seen how much stuff I knew about Nsync back when I was a big fan of theirs. My mom always tells me that if I have that kind of memory on my school work, I would be getting straight A's lol. Oh and another thing...you know how Michael's dad is a diabetic? Well, I'm a second year nursing major in college, and this semester, we start clinicals at a real hospital, and we get to choose our own patients to take care of. If I can, I wanna see if I can take care of a diabetic hehe.

This one girl posted on Idolforums that she's in las vegas for a cheer competition or something, and she was coming out of her hotel, and some guy told her good luck..and she saw his name tag says Michael, and that he looks exactly like Michael Keown. *Sigh*. He went up to talk to her. I'm soooooo envious. Makes me wanna go to Vegas also. Well...to see him, and also to see my favorite female singer, Celine Dion hehe. | | Reply To this Message

And also..w.hile the clip of him getting cut is so depressing (and kinda cringeworthy.... ) If I were you I'd try to get it anyway.... he looks good when he talks... and if you mute the teeviosn it makes it ok! hhehehe

I'll go back next time I have time and fix up some areas. Just wanted to show the drawing to you guys now. Enjoy!

Thanks for offering Tibby ( are there 2 of you ? ) and welcome to INReview.
Questions:
( Note that I'm presuming that you are currently in contact with MK or at least see him 'around'.)
1) How is Michaels dad doing ?
2) Has MK mentioned how he thinks his chances are for coming back as a Wildcard ?
3) Has he mentioned when they let the Wildcards know they are coming back for another chance ? I mean how far in advance of the taping ?
4) Does Michael know that he has a strong fan base -- and also the "Michael haters" someone mentioned ? How does he feel about all that ?

The last time we talked to him was about a week and a half ago. His dad is doing ok right now, and that I feel is all I should say about that at the moment.
He's anxiously awaiting to here about the wildcard and is hoping that he will be called to continue on in the competition, but he doesn't know when they are supposed to contact him. I would guess it would be somewhere in between next week since the Wildcard show is airing the 9th.
As for his strong fan base, we are not sure if he knows about you guys. We called and left him a messege about you guys and this site....that boy is hard to get a hold of with his busy work scheduale and all. So we are just waiting to hear back from him.

Tibby, the Wildcard process is a little different this season. They should be announcing 12 Wildcards on the Week 4 Results show which is March 3 and then choosing 8 of those 12 LIVE to sing on the March 9 show which will probably be taped Saturday March 6.
As for his strong fan base, we are not sure if he knows about you guys. We called and left him a messege about you guys and this site....
Thanks for doing that !

And here's where there could be some "good news".
Maybe you can't reach him because he's a man in motion. Perhaps he's already been informed he is a Wildcard. In fact it's likely that he knows by now.
The March 2 (Group 4) Show has already been taped but not aired, so he may very well be preparing to travel and arrive in time for Wildcard rehearsals which should begin on March 4 if not sooner due to the larger group.
So ... not being able to reach him might very well be a positive sign.

| Posted by: hica19 | | Thank you for answering the questions Tibby! I've been a fan of Michael's ever since the New York auditions where he sang an awesome version of Unchained Melody. I'm really glad that there's someone here that is able to pass the word along to him. Also, I fixed up the drawing I did of Michael. Here is the revised drawing: http://img25.photobucket.com/albums/v75/hica19/MichaelK.jpg

| Posted by: hica19 | | Omg, as you know I'm a nursing student, and I was just at the skills lab getting one of my skills checked off. I saw one of my sorority sisters there. We were talking about how we celebrated our 21st birthdays. My sorority sister celebrated hers in Vegas. I told her that my favorite AI contestant (of course meaning Michael) is from Vegas. Then another one of my sorority sisters said she's also from Henderson and that her mom is a nurse at a hospital in Vegas, and that one of her patients is Michael's dad. Whenever that sorority sister goes home to Vegas, she often goes to the hospital with her mom (I also think she got some nursing assistant job there too) also that she sees Michael at the hospital everyday to be with his dad and he also often sings for the nurses. I just find that really sweet of Michael being so devoted to his dad and also providing some entertainment for the nurses lol. | | Reply To this Message

Thank you so much for answering our questions. This is one step closer to being able to talk to Michael. I really hope he'll be back for wildcards, or if not, that we will still be able to see him perform in the future. He has too much talent to go to waste. I hand drew a picture of Michael a couple of days ago, and took a picture of it with my digital camera to put on here. I was wondering, can you pass it along for him to see? He's already shared so much of his talent with us, and so I'll like to share some of my talent with him. http://img25.photobucket.com/albums/v75/hica19/MichaelK.jpg
