I like Barry! (dont make fun you guys!!!) I like him, cant help it!
That would be great to get McCartney or Elton....that would also be nerve wracking to have to sing in front of two of the greatest!
I still wish they would have gotten Billy Joel on there last year...I wish they would try him again. | | Reply To this Message

Kris I love Reba. Let Simon get smart with her. She is so spunky and honest.

My pick for a judge would be Stevie Wonder. I know, he can't see how they perform, but I would love to hear them sing Stevie. | | Reply To this Message

why don't they change it up a little and bring in willie nelson.

The fact that he can only hear them sing would be excellent because he would be talking ONLY about their voice!
Most of all...I want to see guest judges that would be honest....last year..all we got were "paula" type judges....and I think its important that if you are going to compete in a contest like this that people should be honest with their opinions....If someone sucks, I expect them to say that...maybe not so harsh but in so many words they should tell them what to do to improve...
MJ.....? OMG NO!!! ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!
Oh...and I forgot...if these people are going to choose Barry 's songs...I hope they all dont pick "I Write the Songs"...I want to at least hear one of them "New York City Rhythm." | | Reply To this Message

Stevie Wonder would be a great one. Reba, too!
Paul McCartney would be awesome but I wonder if he'd do it. Same for Elton John. Those guys are still very active performers with heavy schedules. It might be hard to arrange a time fit. But, if they could get McCartney............WOW !
Having guest judges with a lot of A&R experience, not just performing experience, makes a lot of sense to me. How about Smokey Robinson? | | Reply To this Message

Hey, old_scout ... are you an old talent scout ? You sound like you're familiar with the business.
As for this question: How about Smokey Robinson ?
I don't know about Smokey's A&R experience, but I would LOVE it anyway. Look at the old footage, it's fun to watch, and it's clear that they sure knew how to sell a song to their market way back then

Hi Oldbutafan,
Here's a link to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame biography for Smokey Robinson:
http://www.rockhall.com/hof/inductee.asp?id=180
He's discovered a lot more talent than Simon and Randy put together and he's still in the business.
As for me, no, I'm not an old talent scout -- just old!

Or, alternatively, they could create a spinoff of AI.........call it American Rejects...........and have only acts like SCATgirl and Huang She Bang on there........and a panel of weirdo judges to match............Neil Sedaka could be the Simon of that judging panel.........James Brown could be the Randy..........who is bizarre enough to be the Paula character? What if they had the Top 3 from last year Ruben, Kim and Clay "guest judge" ?

I think if they need a back-up judge they might consider inviting Kelly Clarkson.

That's the ONE thing about Paula Abdul that I just can't stand.

| Posted by: oldbutafan | | There is a article about Simon in TVGuide (hardcopy 2/21-27) where he mentions guest judges.
He says he initially hated the idea of guest judges alongside him Randy and Paula.
"It undermined our credibility, and threw off our chemistry" he says. But it's not his call.
He says AI is curently in negotiations with Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder to guest judge. But Simon says his "gut feeling" is McCartney won't show up.
No mention of Barry Manilow this time, so that could mean negotiations are over and Manilow's either in or out.

Yeah, I worked with Arthur Godfrey. I was the one who told him to fire Julius LaRosa.
When we talk about guest judges, we seem to come up with mostly male candidates. So I'm going to throw out a real curve ball for discussion -- would Madonna make a good Pop Idol judge?
Has she already been suggested? If so, I missed it and I apologize. But, if not . . .

In that same TVGuide article I mentioned upthread ... here's what Simon Cowell said about some big names in music:
Britney Spears: "Can't sing."
Bob Dylan: "Too ugly, too boring, too whiny and too serious."
Mariah Carey: "Great voice. Lose the attitude."
Enrique Iglesias: "Can't sing a note."
Madonna: "Over"
I guess they could look to someone like Celine Dion, Beyonce or Alicia Keyes ?
Edited to add: I still think Kelly Clarkson would be a good and appropriate choice as judge.
O/T ... My Grandmother liked Julius LaRosa

Well, I think we can all agree that Simon is NOT the final word on anything, even though he definitely thinks he is.
But, just for discussion's sake ...... if Madonna is "over" then Carole King is practically in the same category with Doris Day ..... and all of the other "oldies but goodies" judges we've discussed are beyond consideration ..... including the ones they've had in previous seasons AND ...... the ones they're considering for this season (Barry Manilow, Elton John, Paul McCartney, etc). For that matter, so is Paula Abdul. In short, Simon's an ass.
Now, what about Madonna? Could she bring anything to the table that other candidates might not have? Perhaps the candor that has been lacking in some past Guest Judges?
Just a thought . . .

Well first of all Carole King is alive and Doris Day is not. I was thinking in terms of a "theme night" where Carole as a judge and some of her music might be appropriate.
Someone mentioned Reba McIntyre who is more country and might be a good pick for a Country Music theme night.
So same-same.
You are correct that Paula really is "over" as well. I didn't think about that but it's a very good point !
I am not and have never been a Madonna fan or non-fan. Basically, indifferent although I enjoyed " Evita !".
So, perhaps some fans or non-fans will be better able to directly respond.
I would lean towards thinking she may be too 'controversial' although that controversy has helped to keep her 'alive' in the public's eye.
Hmmmmmm. Maybe SHE would tell Simon he's a pompous ass.

Still haven't heard any other confirmed names yet.
Maybe they try not to release the names of guest judges too early, so that the competitors don't go picking out songs and practicing them, over and over before the show. They want them to focus one week at a time, would be my guess.

KJ .........
Although I'm not sure precisely the party or the quote that you're attributing to Randy, I'll tell you what I saw. On Access Hollywood , on Monday afternoon, they had a big Oscars recap show and they showed a lot of celebrities being interviewed during the various events surrounding the Oscars.
In one segment -- and it was only about 15 seconds long -- someone stuck a microphone in Randy Jackson's face and asked him about guest hosts for the American Idol show. I don't remember his precise answer but I believe that it was fairly non-commital. Something like, "Well, we're talking to both Elton John and Paul McCartney right now." I took it to be nothing more than a publicity-seeking kind of soundbite.
I hope that both Elton and Paul do sign on as guest judges but I'm still wondering how they'll find the time for that in their busy schedules.
We'll wait and see.

How about Oprah ... Simon guested on her challenge !

Carol King would be awesome. I would hate to see Madonna on there. She does not have a good voice. Madonna was and is a master of public relations. She knew how to keep people wanting more, and was able to reinvent herself over and over.
I did not mind Dianne Warren on there last season. She has written so many great songs.

| Posted by: ShowerClay | | Are we absolutely sure about Barry Manilow being a guest judge? The reason I ask is because when Simon was a guest on Jay Leno a few weeks ago and he and Jay were talking about this AI season, Simon said they were "doing a Barry Manilow NIGHT" and he actually offered the guest judge position to Jay Leno.
