I didn't see Girl With a Pearl Earring, but I can't immagine this award going anywhere but into the hands of Grany Major. As I watched the movies, I noticed that the images strikingly resembled the visions I had in my head as I read the books. I can't help but predict that a majority of fans felt the same way, and so will the Academy.
Costume Design
One of the things one DOESN'T notice off the bat about LotR, the costumes. Along the same lines as the Art Direction, the costumes of the trilogy really did reflect what one pictures while reading the books. I think they'll take this one.
Directing
He's done what, in my opinion, no Hollywood director never has. Oscar for him.
Film Editing
I might sound like a parrot, but I think this one goes to LotR. They shot SO MUCH footage... editing would have been monumental. I think Jamie did a good job.
Makeup
The only other contenders for this one Master and Commander and Pirates of the Caribbean. When you are creating mythical characters, real people just don't compare.
Music (Score)
If it were me, I'd give this one to Dan Elfman for Big Fish. However, I'm guessing the Academy will stick with favored Shore, who is also a wonderful composer. Either one could take it. For an extremely unlikely upset, but also a worthy score, look for Finding Nemo.
Music (Song)
Into the West has been done to death. My vote is You Will Be My Ain True Love by Sting. (for Cold Mountain)
Best Picture
It's a deserving film, to say the least, though there are those among us (http://www.inreview.com/showthread....14682&forumid=9) who wouldn't agree. My guess, however, is that Mystic River will take this one (though I'd be more than happy to see it go to Jackson).
Sound Mixing
The five films in this catagory are more than deserving, but I give it to The Last Samurai.
Visual Effects
LotR had spectacular effects. From a gigantic spider who actually held Frodo and wrapped him in silk, to the inside of Mount Doom (I was literally feeling the heat)... However, I give this one to Barbosa changing into a skeleton in real time. (Pirates of the Caribbean) The storm scenes were great, too (they actually built three full-size ships for the production - wow).
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Is there any question? Didn't think so.

That makes 6-8 Oscars for them this year. Good luck to Lord of the Rings! | | Reply To this Message

all right, most of these i agree with, except for the one above. I think ROTK deserves it over Pirates for the fact that for the set of Minas Tirith, they actually built a miniature model of it, to scale. though 3 full size ships is impressive, i think the sheer detail that you can see on their sets should win it for ROTK... but hey, 6-8 oscars ain't bad even if they don't get this one. i also doubt it will win best picture (though it does stand a good chance) due to the fact that its a final chapter in a trilogy, not a stand alone movie.
and what do ya mean Into the West has been done to death. that song is beautiful, if a bit unnecessary.

Well, Shadow, you might be right. Like I said... the VisFX in RotK were outstanding. Scale models have been done to death (ahem... ILM) but the LotR crew did do it with quite a bit of detail. I wouldn't be surpirised to see myself be wrong on this one, but I'm sill going with Pirates on this one.

You're in line with my thinking here. I almost wish there was a "Second Best Picture of the Year" Oscar!

I didn't say it wasn't beautiful. It is a marvelous song (playing on my computer right now, actually). Having won so many awards already, though, I doubt it will take this Oscar. Howard Shore is an utterly outstanding composer... favored to win the Best Score... but I don't think they'll venture as far as a repeat for Into The West.

what they need is an award that encompasses all three. then it would truly get the credit it deserves.

| Posted by: cute_babe | | Lord of the Rings rocks!!!! When I watched the film, I could feel the emotion inside. No other movie like this. But, there are 2 things are bad: 1.the fellowship is ended and this is the last chapter.... Whatever, LOTR deserve all the best!!!!!! I love all the trilogy! Anyone deals with me? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | Just a few hours to go until the Oscars start. This thread will be sticky for the week for all of your comments on how ROTK did. If it wins, please feel free to celebrate, or if it is denied its rightful Oscar, we just ask that you keep it clean. | | Reply To this Message
