| Posted by: Old Scout | | I voted for Big Band mainly because I think that having to sing the old "standards" puts everyone on a level playing field -- performers, judges and audience.
Everyone has heard those songs performed many times and can form a reasonably good opinion of whether an American Idol performance of a certain song is good or bad.

| Posted by: PuNkY bReWsTeR | | Definately "Big Band". I agree with old scout on this one. Although, the only way they could really pull off the whole "Big Band" thing is for there to be a LIVE band accompaning the competitors, or else it will seem to cheezed up or corny if the producers decide to have them sing via cassette player (or whatever fake technical device they use)
And seeing how they cannot really have this happen with all top members this season (too many different songs causing too many pauses for the band to warm up, and blah blah blah...) I can see them using this idea for the top three or top four. That would actually be cool, a nice change from the regular routine of the past two seasons. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Old Scout | | I don't think Leno has ANY qualifications to be a Judge in a singing talent competition.
But, once upon a time, he did have a prominent role in a classic rock & roll movie. Remember which one? It was American Hot Wax, the Alan Fried story.
Leno played Fried's chauffer / gofer, who was in hot pursuit of Fried's secretary, played by Fran Dresher. Fran gave Jay his first (and probably his only) "screen kiss" in that movie.
Tim McIntyre played the role of Alan Fried. Tim is no longer with us. He died about ten years ago, if my memory is correct.
Tim's first significant screen role was in a movie called The Sterile Cuckoo, based on a novel by John Nichols. The female star in that movie was a very young Lisa Minelli. She got her first Academy Award nomination for her role as "Pooky Adams" in that flick. Wendell Burton was her co-star.
I could go on and on but this could turn into one of those "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" things before it's all over. I'd better just quit ............ NOW! | | Reply To this Message

In Season 1, they had a live big band for Big Band night. I honestly don't remember how few were left standing at that point. I do remember the live band tho' because Kelly Clarkson sang "All That There" and was the ONLY one who acknowledged the band at the end, which is a must ! |

| Posted by: Lawless | | I loved when they did Big Band in the first season. I have a recording on dvd of Kelly's songs throughout that entire season, and I absolutely loved that song that she did. And you're right... she was the one that acknowledged the band. She has talent AND respect.
Anyway... big band would be a great theme night... but I'm STILL saying that I want a country night. | | Reply To this Message

Definitely "Big Band" . . . Although, the only way they could really pull off the whole "Big Band" thing is for there to be a LIVE band accompanying the competitors . . .

Although the Wednesday night Results shows are presented "Live", I'm pretty confident that the Tuesday night Performance shows are taped and edited before they are broadcast. Why would they NOT be? So a live band presents no problem for that show that I can see. Any professional orchestra would not need to pause and "tune up" between numbers, unless it was an all-string band.
One consideration bears mention -- if they used a real orchestra for accompaniment on the Performance show, then they'd need to have them ready to go again on the "Live" Results show the next night, when the two Winners will be expected to re-sing their previous night's winning performance. Even then, I don't think it would be a problem for any group of professional studio musicians.
Of course, the Producers would have to PAY for the band and they might not want to accept the higher production expenses on each and every show.
Just my thoughts . . .

I'd like to see country too but I only got one vote
Too bad it can't be a double column poll where we could say yes or no to all the choices ... I want to just say no to Disco
