Why do we love American Idol? |

| Posted by: mystic | | I think I love it for few reasons...
The main one...Simon, and his comments...I love those comments he makes...there is always something I know he will say that I will be laughing about or otherwise angry about...I think its the unsureness of him that keeps me watching.
Another one would be seeing contestants like Clay who start at the bottom and win people's hearts...I love to see something like that especially from a guy like that who has a really nice way about him. (or gal..if it applies...like Kim)..she was basically written off by many people and ended up being the only gal left..and she showed that she was really good! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | I love American Idol, because it gives a person who might have struggled, for YEARS, a chance to become a singer and have a career. Also, besides the winner, there are others who can be discovered as well, that have talent, but didn't make it to the final position.
I love listening to new voices...
On top of that... I love listening to the comments from the judges.
Randy with his, "Man, dog, dude" words all over the place crack me up...
Paula and her little "miss nice" makes me want to puke sometimes....
Simon and his over the top, colorful words, while harsh, are sometimes very needed. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: oldbutafan | | I love American Idol for mostly the same reasons you've mentioned.
First the oportunity given to the contestants. Talent Shows are not a new concept but AI is different. The final 10 get professional song stylists, and vocal coaching thoughout the competition ... not to mention the image/wardrobe assistance ... and I think get a feel for the business. The experience is unique and priceless.
I also love to see the development of someone like Clay. He started out as raw talent and now he's really cookin'. An extreme makeover of a different sort.
And then there's the critique and comments ... ALL of them and not just THEIR opinions ... I like to "play along". I enjoy seeing how my/our impression compares to the judges'. I probably scream at the TV more during AI than a football game, though I rarely find myself yelling "Dog" as it tends to startle my 4-legged one . And by the way ... I have seen comments in this forum even funnier, more cutting and clever than Simon's ( although I myself can be borderline sappy when suffering from the dreaded Paula Syndrome :lol)
One more thing is the after affect ... I do keep looking at Ruben and sort of internally "pull" for him.
I enjoy seeing/listening to Kelly ... and am still just mesmerized by Clay when I see/hear him singing on some show.
Who's next ?
The beat goes on. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | I like to see someone get a chance who does not fit the record industry's image of what a singer should be. I am so tired of the Brittney's who have no voice and only an image. I want a voice that gives you chills with its purity. I want to hear the talent. Although I believe the voting on the final 2 is so arbitrary that the producers ultimately pick the Idol, I enjoy the chance to see these kids shine. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Old Scout | | It's odd. I'm really not a fan of any of the "reality shows" (Survivor, etc) or the "talent shows" (Star Search, etc) but I enjoy watching American Idol.
The format is really good and the judges (Randy, Paula & Simon) are certainly entertaining, as well as being qualified to judge music talent.
Ultimately, I suppose, I watch AI simply because it is the only venue on television that feeds my particular interests in the music scene. (I used to be a VH-1 fanatic a long time ago but I've given up on both VH-1 and MTV now.) Music has been a lifelong hobby and I'm drawn to any show about music or music performers.
Does anyone remember that show on Fox a few years ago? It was a series that documented the steps in the creation of a boy-band like Nsynch........big, fat promoter..........wannabe tryouts............selection process.............dance and voice training...........studio work...........public relations...........etc. It was kind of goofy (and even a little disturbing) but it was REAL.
Well, I watched that show too, even though I could not care less about Nsynch, Backstreet Boys, or any other pre-fabricated pop group. It's like watching a train wreck. It's horrifying and you know that you're going to get upset when you see what happens, but you just can't look away.
American Idol is like that............sorta.

| Posted by: Old Scout | | Hi Fuscia,
That's right! Making of the Band! I didn't remember that it was on ABC. It just seemed like the type of show that would be on Fox.
I can't remember the name of the band. Do you? Whatever happened to them after the show ran its course? They obviously haven't performed up to the level of Nsynch and other groups or I'd have heard a lot about them by now. Right?
Do you remember any of the details of the show? A couple of things from that show reminded me of some of the discussions I've read on INreview about American Idol.
One of the character situations from Making of the Band that comes to mind is when the kid from Hawaii just blew off his big chance. Remember? He just didn't practice, missed rehersals and then took off for a few days back home in the islands without telling anyone he was going to be gone. And the promoter kept begging him to come back, even while his fellow band members wanted to get rid of him!
Haven't we seen that same lack of commitment over and over again among the contestants on American Idol? That's another reason I like to watch that show -- it gives tremendous insight into human nature. Why do people like Lisa (the swimsuit model) and Paul, both of whom have adequate singing talent for this competition, just goof off and not even try to make a good showing?

| Posted by: meatymeat | | why do you guys like it?
because you're part of the machine, part of the minion of brain washed popular culture loving schmucks who couldn't think their way out of a wet paper bag.
if you love this show, or any reality tv, or eat at McDonalds, or read tabloids, then you're wasting space.
i love the fact that people think the contestants are truly talented, and that the judges are qualified to judge! hilarious!
mass production of music is anti-culture in so many ways. but you'll keep lapping it up as long as you're told..

| Posted by: Whidden | | Here are brain washed Whiddens ideas on it.
I like American Idol vrs. the other shows like Star Search, because you grow to know the contestants every week. On Star Search, you get a quick song from the person and that's about it.
American Idol does a good job of showing you a lot of behind the scenes stuff, so you get to know the contestants and feel a conection with them. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | Meaty meat, you need to go to the Flamers Ward part of Inreview. That's where the real arguments go on. It's fun in there. Don't give up on Inreview yet. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | Yeah, go to the main menu, then near the bottom is the Flamers Ward. Start a thread about how American Idol sucks.
Thats where we go to argue. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | This is a thread on why we love American Idol, we are supposed to stay on topic.
Actually, you did the right thing by starting your own thread to crack on it. This thread is say why you love it.
You don't have to go to the Flamers Ward, it's just more for hard core arguments. Your other thread will do fine for arguing. | | Reply To this Message
