I've heard disgusting rumors that US camp positions in Iraq are named after Oil companies. Shell, Texaco, Mobil etc? Anyone know where I could get confirmation of this? As repulsive as the whole situation is, this might be the moste vile example of American ignorance and arrogance I've yet heard.

In my opinion the Iraqi's can name their camps any **** thing they want on their own soil. There is intense perversion in naming the US camps after oil companies. I just want to know if it's true.

Do you find it disgusting?

Up to this point it's an unsubstantiated hypothetical not really worthy of comment..

It is worthy of comment by anyone who can help me substantiate it. If you have a source please post.

Rumors are rumors. I've listened to news reports on various channels all day since the war started and while they have mentioned a number of the camps in the area, not one of them included the name of an Oil company.

Can you imagine the sort of crap they would get over something like that? It's a joke - a left-winged liberal's idea of a wet dream. It didn't happen.

I found this reference. It must be where i heard it. Does any one have anything else?

While listening to NPR on my way home from work Tuesday (may have been monday) they were speaking to a journalist there in Iraq about the FARPs (forward armor refueling point?) that were being setup. During this conversation it came out that the unofficial code names for the 2 FARPs now active in Iraq were "Shell" and "Exxon". There was a brief pause, then Robert Siegel queried with some disbelief in his voice "Are they aware of the irony of those names?" The reporter replied "No, I believe that the irony is not lost on these troops."

I think naming camps after gas companies would be pretty obtuse to the situation Malik

If those names are being used, they are being used by the troops unofficially, much like a police officer calling a suicide victim a "diver" or a cocaine addict a Junky. Lingo pops up on it's own, and is not endicative of one thing or another.

If they do call a supply depot camp exxon, it is fitting though. Just like calling the bathroom the "Porcalin alter" does not denagrate real religious shrines.

Grow up. There are enough real problems in the world, that people should not waste their valuable time trying to find more that are not in any way substancial.
