It is a good reference for the new people that come in here. That is the question people who never read the book want ot know.

Right the reasons:

1. the powers of the rings had ended.

2. Galadriel had said that she would not leave Middle-Earth untill the world was at peace. She was as stubborn and strong minded as Feanor.

3. Gandalf had been summoned home by the song of the sea, Thus his time had ended and he was summoned by the Valar.

So, was Gandalf returning because he bore Narya, or because he was a Maia?

Both, plus his work was done.

Why exactly did Frodo have to go, was it just because he was a Ringbearer? And if so, why didn't Sam leave as well?

Frodo was a ring bearer but he had grown weary of the world and was allow to go to Valinor.

Sam is rumoured to have left after the death of Merry, Pippin and Rosey but before Legolas and Gimli.

Oh see, I didn't know that!
Did Frodo have a choice as to whether he could stay or go, or was it not optional?

Yes he did, he chose to leave so he could leave behind all his injuries and illness, like the Morgul blade wound, and Shelob's sting.

I'm not sure but if you think about it Valinor now has Valar, Anuir, Elves, Men (Earendil), Hobbits (Bilbo and Frodo) and a dwarf in Gimli so that the Children of Illuvitar and Aule have all got represntatives in Valinor.

I can only imagine what Gimli though of the wonderous land across the sea, great jewels and buildings that would have taken even the greatest Dwarven smith years to make.

I never really understood the Legolas/Gimli thing... so they made a boat, and sailed to Valinor?

Well apparently Galadriel begged the Valar to allow them to cross into Valinor and so the allowance was made for Gimli. But yes Legolas and Gimli made a boat after the death of Aragorn and sailed into the west forever, untill Dagor Dagoreth.

I wonder what would have happened at Dagor Dagoreth, would all the elves, men and dwarves come back and fight agains Morgoth one last time for good or ill or would only those remaining in Valinor return?

I suppose it must be everyone, as Melkor has no supporters in Valinor to fight for him
