This is a thread to discuss the "character" of Pippin. Comments about Billy Boyd performance are welcome, but if you would like to discuss Billy please stay in the Billy Boyd thread. There is also a thread for Merry.

We all know you looooove Pippin. Now is a good time to say all the great things about him.

I think he's the most "flavorful" character... I mean, he's always making mistakes, showing how he feels and what he thinks... and it's cute how he's always looking up to Merry when he is confused (which happens alot)

Pippen is a great character, made even greater in my mind, from the movies.
I loved watching him grow from a really selfish hobbit, to being responsible....
Even though he goofed up for the majority of the time, he matured so much there at the end.
He saw where he was wrong and immature. He was big enough to stand up for what was right...
And his heart... he had such an incredible passion there, in the last movie, to fight to the end, knowing that he would most likely die.

He wears his emotions on his sleeve! And he grows up really fast in the third book/film.

Well put KJ. Thank you. Pippin growth is yet another very important sub plot in LOTR. I really liked it in the book and I think PJ really gave that storyline the attention that it deserves. Pippin goes from being barely a child, to a hero!

Pippin was also the youngest member of the company. So, it was interesting to see his reaction as the reality of the quest hits home with him.

While all of the hobbits add innocence to the story, Pippin does so the most.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Yes, it is his inquisitive innocence that wins over many hearts.

Pippin is one of my favorite characters and he has lots of great lines. But I really like "Well, what about second breakfast?" As many times as I've seen Fellowship of the Ring, that line still makes me giggle. And Billy Boyd delivers the line flawlessly.

I always enjoy it when Gandalf calls him a "Tom fool of a Took", yet you can still see that Gandalf likes him.

Yeah and he says it with such love.

He won my heart over when he bowed before the Steward of Gondor, and told him of Boromir's fate, and then offered his services!!! He's just so darn cute, and how can you help but love him?!

Very true Kris. I love that he does that and also tries to save Faramir.

My heart broke when Merry and Pippin were separated in TTT book, or ROTK movie. When I read the book I wept. In the movie you really felt their pain. Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd's chemistry really brought Merry and Pippin's close relationship to the screen. Pippin is taken from his beloved cousin, fearing that they may never see each other again. Pippin really looked up to Merry. Just as much as he looked up to Frodo.

I know. Even Gandalf had to smirk

Oh man... in the movie, when he ran up to them, screaming that Faramir wasn't dead...
The courage that little Pippen has just moved me. Even when Denthor throws him out, and releases him of his service... Pippen doesn't give up. He get's help.
And when he jumps through the fire to save Faramir... WOW!!! What a hobbit.

Quite true... the seperation of Pippen and Merry was heartwrenching.
You could see how sorry Pippen truly was... and as upset as Merry was with him, he didn't want his best friend to be taken from him.
It was a time though (the seperation of these two) where they both grew and matured in great ways.

I wanted to stand up in the theater and applaud when he saved Faramir. Did you catch the part when he saved Gandalf too. When he was warning Gandalf that he was trying to burn Faramir alive an orc came up behind Gandalf and Pip stabbed him with his sword.

When Aragorn throws him an apple in the film (fotr) and it hits him on the head, i find it funny that he looks at the sky as if to say 'Huh? Whered that come from?'

And after the Council of Elrond, he asks "So where we goin'?"

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

Oh yeah... at the council, when they have formed the Fellowship of the Nine, and he asks where they are going. That was a classic line.

That was funny
in ROTK:
Pippin: I feel like im back at the Green Dragon after a hard days work.
Merry: Tho' you've never done a hard days work Pip.

says it all!

Pippin always has this sort of open-mouthed, spaced-out kind of look on his face all through the movies. Especially in Kaza-dum. it's is so adorable.

"so when do we start on this mission...quest...thing." and merry just looks at him like "oooh boy...." its so in character for both of them.

He has some great lines! Him and Merry were comic relief for the first movie but in the second and third that passed on to Gimli.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

Yes by the 3rd movie Merry and Pippin were both serious characters. That says a lot for Dom and Billy. Not too many actors can do both comic relief and serious drama as the same character.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

What about Jim Carey? He plays a great serious character in Ace Ventura!!

One of the first lines from Merry, when they are stealing the fireworks, goes something like: 'No the big one, the big one.'

He has a really comical voice, but I think they must've given that up when they realised he would sound ridiculous in his serious lines.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: billyisthebest

Although they are serious... They are funny too I think... maybe it's just because they are so cute! but how about their opening lines in rotk? those are funny. And when Pip climbs up to light the beacon and he's still standing on the wood when it ignites... and when he is told not to say anything to Denethor? I find all those parts hilarious. maybe it's just me

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

When they are drunk (and stoned?) in Isengard is hilarious.

PIPPIN: 'I feel like I'm back in the Green Dragon after a hard days work!'
MERRY: 'Pippin, you've never done a hard days work!'

The whole 'smoking cannabis' insinuations throughout the films are great in fact.

SARUMAN: 'You're love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind.'

Reply To this Message

Posted by: billyisthebest

Are you sure that's what it means? that's not how I inturperated it, because Sauruman smokes longbottom leaf from the Shire too... I always look it to mean the shire.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Well I don't know

If you smoke cannabis you'd know what I mean though, it makes people a bit . Not that I'm advocating the use of drugs tho.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: billyisthebest

well anyways... back to Pippin! I love pippin.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

you are not the only one who finds those bits funny! When he is standing on the wood and sort of looks proud and then realises that he'll get burnt if he doesnt move

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea that was pretty funny alot of people laughed at that part in the theatre

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Jokers_Harley

remember these commercials:

This is your brain, this is your brain on drugs..... any questions??"

and I took that line by Saruman to mean the same thing as you Sandy................

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I found it was full of them:

'You smoke too much Pippin.'

'Finest weed in the Southfarthings.' etc.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

And 'why did you look? Why do you always have to look?' even thought it was said by Merry...it gives a good idea of Pippin's character!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

I wonder what would've happened if Pippin hadn't gone on the Fellowship. Gandolf wouldn't have fallen off the Bridge at Khazad Dum, because Pippin wouldn't have woken up the Balrog. He wouldn't have looked in the Stone of Orthanc, so the Eye wouldn't have been distracted from Frodo and Aragorn wouldn't have been seen. Faramir would probably of died with Denathor, and so would have Merry in the Battle.

But then, of course, most of that stuff wouldn't have happened anyway with Gandalf with them. Frodo and Sam wouldn't have left and Merry probably wouldn't have been kidnapped by the Uruk Hai on his own, so Rohan would've fallen at Helm's Deep and if all the Fellowship went to Mordor, Gondor would've fallen probably as well.

Just a few thoughts, I thought I'd share

Pippin was also the one that got the Treebeard to turn toward Isengard in the movie. When Treebeard saw what Saruman had done, the ents got involved.

ya I know! He shouldn't be quite that quick in my opinion... It didn't match his thinking powers in the rest of the movies.

also, Merry is supposed to come up with "mellon" at the doors of moria isn't he?

I like the way in the book Pippin and Merry, and Fatty Bolger conspire against Frodo with the unwilling aid of Sam because they are all so fond of him. In the film you get no idea of how good friends they all are before they leave the Shire, they all just find each other in Farmer Maggot's field.

Just adding this for all those people who don't like what PJ did with LOTR. I think this is how we should view them both, as two different interpretations of the same story. PJ was not trying to mutilate the masterpiece of Tolkein, just use it as a source for his films, remember the title of the film is not 'Tolkein's Lord of the Rings'.

I agree. In the film it seems like M & P just happen upon the adventure, when actually they were in on it from the beginning.

good point. I agree with that!

And Billyisthebest didnt use cut-and-paste for all those Pippins.... did you?

Merry and Pippin, especially Pippin have much bigger parts in the books, Three is company is a great chapter!

the "conspiracy Unmasked" chapter is one of my favorites in the first part of the book. i liked how Merry and Pippin managed to spy on him or use sam...clever aint they?

They never get the attention they deserve, As Dominic and Billy said on the commentaries :' The Lord of the Rings should have been called the Adventures of Merry and Pippin!'

of course I didn't use copy paste And I agree, Billy and Dom don't get nearly as much publicity as they should... They aren't even on the rotk movie poster!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

Yeah! That was A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G! They are only on one of the TT posters too!

Reply To this Message

It's probably because, although they had big parts, they do not have as big a fan base (bigger is not necessarily better ) as the likes of Viggo, Orlando, and Elijah.

They put ARWEN on it!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Precisely my point. Arwen has a really small part, so she shouldn't be on the posters, but because she is famous, (Ooh look it's the daughter of the Aerosmith guy, lets buy the poster!) she is put on it.

There is no room in commercialisation for REAL fans

They should make posters with just one character on them...like they do for Orlando Bloom

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Also Arwen is the only person in the films to satisfy the testosterone filled male contingent of the LOTR fans. She IS gorgeous after all!

*mutters* Stupid Liv Tyler...stupid Orlando Bloom...

wow no bashing orli in front of me! I love Billy... and I think that they should get more publicity, but Orli is so nice! and Hot!

There are some publicity posters of Pippin for ROTK. He had a bigger part than Merry in part3. I haven't seen any for Merry

I can't remember. I think MediaPlay or someplace like that. They were nice. My favorite one is him in his Gondor uniform.

Merry and Pippin are on the cover of some of the soundtracks, too. There are I think six different versions of the cover, and they are on one of them.

ya... I like how the rotk soundtracks have the reversible cover, you know, with a picture on each side.

all i can say is i LUV pippin (notice the name) he is my favorite charecter. HE has the best personality. He can be really clueless at times but he can also be really smart. Like in the book when he makes tracks of hi own and losens the rope. Well he does grow inside and understands things he didnt before. And he is soooo cute i fell in love with him before i even saw the movie so it really is his personality. *sigh*

I think it's pretty obvious that you like Pip if you are posting in this thread. I think most of us can relate to pip because he is always making mistakes and getting into embarrassing blunders. But he can be quite brilliant at times, in his own way. Bill really pulled off the character well.

Thats what is so good about Pippin. He is so.....lifelike! He isnt high-and-mighty or immortal or a brilliant fighter...he is like most of the world, clumsy and foolish! you can relate to him!

Yes, I am a lot like Pippin. I like to dance on tables in bars and chat with guys with really pretty eyes. Just kidding!

*Ahem* This is a Pippin thread, there is a Billy thread just a few lines down for you to talk about that!! Just kiddin'

If you had said...
What would you girls do if you ever had a chance to meet Pippin Took?
... It would have been OK.

I would like to meet Pippin, I could get him drunk and he would be funny all night long!

Reply To this Message

Yay!

As much as meeting a big moviestar appeals to me, there is something about meeting a humble hobbit that would be so much better!

But the real question is... Who's funnier, Pip or Billy?
I would say Pippin, slapstick all the way

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

Definitely Pippin! Loved him even before I saw the movie.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: billyisthebest

Pippin is hilarious, just because he is always screwing things up. But Bill is funny too, especially when he's with Dom.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

Both, just in different ways!

agreed it is too difficult to choose

Reply To this Message

Pippin and Billy are both hillarious, it is impossible to choose between them. Anyone who has read this thread knows that Pippin is funny, and anyone who has ever listened to the commentaties knows that Billy is funny.

And anyway, the man got the part of the Sniper in Sniper 470 by doing that awesome impression of weightlessness while sitting down.
That is funny and really hard to do!

WOW. I just looked at the date of billyisthebest's post and was trying to figure out how a post from February 13 could be before Febuary 11, then I saw the year. Doubtful anyone will post here, so I'll just unsubscribe. Before I go, in the spirit of Saint Valentine's Day and Pippin, here is a picture: (If anyone happens to come back one day, that is)

I don't know if my attached picture will show up. I've never done the pictures before. If not, it is a picture of Billy in costume with his tiny double in the same costume and at the bottom of the page it says PIPPIN TOOK MY HEART

I'm reminiscing over all the old threads I used to visit in this forum and came upon this one.

As Pippin is, has, and always will be my favourite character from Lord of the Rings, and is my namesake on InReview I thought I would post once again in here.
