Yes, we all loved dear old Bilbo. So, excluding him, who was your favorite character or characters in the Hobbit?

Yes Smaug was the best. I did not care for how silly the elves seemed to be in the Hobbit.

The elves didnt seem very elf-like in The Hobbit did they?
I liked Smaug too! He isnt mean...just misunderstood!

Maybe the elves got into something they shouldn't have to make them act so silly.

Smaug, well, dragons have their own motivations. Smaug, what a cool name.

his name means something like "one squeezed down a small hole" or something close to it.

I liked Beorn. Didn't quite totally understand what he was all about, though.

I didn't really understand that either, but I thought he was cool, I mean come on he had dogs who stood on their hind legs and served people , that is awesome. I wish my dog could do that LOL.

I think Thorin was good too, a good character.

The strange thing is that the trolls in the Hobbit are so different than the trolls in LOTR.

Well the Hobbit was a childrens tale, perhaps J.R.R. wanted to make them appear scarier for the other works.

I liked Smaug but just for the reason that I like Dragons. My favorite characters in the hobbit are Bard the Bowman and Thorin Oakenshield.

The Elves I believe act differently in the hobbit to what they did in the other books because of where they are. They are, apart from in Rivendell, Wood-Elves under the rule of King Thranduil in Mirkwood. In the south of Mirkwood is a place called Dol Guldor where the Necromancer lives. The Necromancer is Sauron and so the shadow falls on Mirkwood. Because of the Necromancer the Elves of Mirkwood are un-trusting and behave in a different manner to Elves in Lothlorien or Imaldris(Rivendell).

Beorn is either a descendant of wild-men of the Misty Mountains or lived there and was driven out by the Orcs/Goblins. Which is why in the chapter we meet him there is a part about Beorn looking up at the Mountains and saying that his people would return there someday.

The Trolls, I believe, act differently to Trolls in the Lord of the Rings books because the are Olog-hai, which are a newer breed of Trolls with a higher Intelligence.

Anyway Bard and Thorin are my favorite from the Hobbit

White Tiger, excellent post. You made some great points about the Elves of Mirkwood. I am going to find that book this weekend and will start reading again so we can really kick this forum back to life. Feel free to start threads.

The Olog-hai were in the movie. You know where Aragorn gets stood on by the thing when they are at the black gate in the return of the king, that thing is an Olog-hai.

This is a direct quote from The Encyclopedia of Arda www.glyphweb.com/arda

Olog-hai-The greater trolls of the third age

"A race of trolls bred by Sauron in the late years of the Third Age, seen among the trees of southern Mirkwood, and the mountain borders of Mordor. They were superior to other trolls in almost every way: stronger and more powerful, but also showing greater intelligence and skill. Many of their abilities they owed to being under the direct will of their master, Sauron, and while under his control they could exist in direct sunlight, unlike others of their kind.

In the battle before the Gates of Mordor, Aragorn and the Captains of the West encountered a company of large trolls, identified as 'hill-trolls out of Gorgoroth'. That battle took place in sunlight, and so it seems to follow that the hill-trolls must have been Olog-hai. They are described as being taller than a man, and covered in horny scales, carrying hammers and bucklers in their claws, though there is no way of knowing whether this description applies to all of the Olog-hai, or just those in the battle."

I love The Encyclopedia of Arda!

That is what they are, It was never said what type of troll the ones in the Hobbit were. It is just my interpretation that they are Olog-hai.
