this trilogy is turning out great, so far.. I think they could really solidify the whole thing by making the prequel, The Hobbit with the same production quality. It'd tie it all together So far I haven't heard any plans related to this though..

I was just thinking about this the other day.

PJ: So, guys, like - well - LOTR was a big hit, eh? We made loads of money off those three films.
Newline: Yeah, PJ, we sure did. Because of you - we're all really rich now.
PJ: No prob, guys. I had fun n' all - so it was cool.
Newline: So, why are you bothering us now, PJ?
PJ: Well, I'm not quite sure what to do with myself now...
Newline: Go on vacation. In fact, leave now - you've been sitting around the office all day eating everything in the fridge - in fact, you're fir--
PJ: Guys - guys! I have a great idea ... !
Newline: Wait -
PJ: Let's do the Hobbit!
Newline: The who?
PJ: The Hobbit! The prequel to LOTR!
Newline: Prequel? Huh? We like sequels...
PJ: No one would expect it and it'd be HUGE when we release the teaser trailer!
Newline: PJ, please don't eat all the crackers, those are for the investors from Japan coming in later today...
PJ: Yes, yes - The Hobbit - whatever we do, we've gotta keep it under raps.
Newline: Does this mean you'll be asking for more money?
PJ: Speaking of money - you guys think ya might be able to pay me for Fellowship one of these days? I'm havin' a hard time meetin' the rent this month...

I have read and seen some things tied into a possible creation of the Hobbit. That the man playing Bilbo in LOTR may play Bilbo in "The Hobbit" and that P Jackson may be dir.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO there if they make The Hobbit into film. And I know that Peter Jackson would do a great job with it, just like the trilogy of the rings.

More 'Lord of the Rings'?!
December 2, 2003

Director PETER JACKSON, the force behind 'The Lord of The Rings' box-office hits, is pushing for yet another project to add to the trilogy. Jackson wants to shoot the prequel to the story, The Hobbit, which was published 17 years before Rings debuted. No word yet on when or if the filming will begin -- the famous director is tied up for the next two years with his next movie, a reimagining of 'King Kong.'

So we will have to wait, but at least he wants to do it .

Here's a bit more on this from today's news:

'Rings' Director Wants to Bring 'Hobbit' to Screen

New Zealand film director Peter Jackson, tipped to win an Oscar for his "The Lord of the Rings" epic, said Monday he would like to make "The Hobbit" prequel to the trilogy and work with some of the same actors again.

Speaking to journalists in Berlin ahead of the European premiere of the last part of the "Rings" trilogy -- "The Return of the King" -- Jackson said he was sad but also relieved that the mammoth project he has worked on for seven years was over.

"I'm glad there's not a fourth Lord of the Rings film next year," he said. "I feel very tired and exhausted."

"I've been working very hard this year. It was the hardest year of the whole seven really," he said, adding that the last part had twice as many computer-generated shots as the second, "The Two Towers," which won an Oscar for digital effects.

"It's my favorite because it has a stronger emotional depth than the other two films, it has a sense of closure," he said.

Despite his exhaustion, Jackson is not resting on his laurels and said if complex rights issues can be resolved he would like to direct "The Hobbit," J.R.R. Tolkien's prequel to the "Rings" trilogy set some 50 years earlier.

"I'd be interested in doing it because I think it would give continuity to the overall chapter," he said.

While many of the lead "Rings" characters do not appear in "The Hobbit" story, the wizard Gandalf, played by Ian McKellen, and Gollum, the cave dweller corrupted by the powerful ring, do and should make a comeback. Arwen, the elf princess played by Liv Tyler, could also feature again, Jackson said.

Cool. I do hope that they leave Arwen out of the Hobbit. She was not mentioned by name in the book, and I just do not want to see anymore of her.

i agree.

if jackson gets enough wiggle room to do a 3 hour flick then i think he will be able to do a very faithful interpretation of the book. actually i've just started rereading the hobbit, as a prelude to my "red book" version of LoTR that i hope to receive this Christmas. i think the hobbit is as complete a story as the lord of the rings is, but is oftentimes overshadowed by it. but i guess that's to be expected. the lord of the rings is just a whole other animal that is just utterly amazing in it's depth and scope. i could just go on and on as to how wonderful i find these stories. but i won't.

Red Book version? O.K. Larke, what are we missing out on? Yes the books are wonderful. I received a copy of the Hobbit last year for Christmas. I had not read it since I was in seventh grade. It is a wonderful story but nowhere near as dark as Lord of The Rings. I just love those books.

after the movies came out i started looking into some of the hardbound editions of the books. it's been out for quite some time (1974). it's a one volume edition:
http://www.lord-of-the-rings.org/books/lord_rings_book.gif

it has no illustrations, but it does have a big fold out map and the page numbers (and other misc. details) are printed in red to match the book cover.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/039...040#reader-page with this link you can see the cover and flip through some of the pages.

there's also a 'green' version of the hobbit. with, of course, green ink.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/039...040#reader-page

nothing earth shattering, but i've had my eye on them since the first of the movies came out. even though some of the others have magnificent full color illustrations, these just really captured my attention.

AP: There's a lot of curiosity now about whether anyone will film Tolkien's prequel, "The Hobbit." Are you interested in directing that someday?

JACKSON: I'd be happy to. It would be strange for somebody else to do it. And I also think to do justice to "The Hobbit" it would be great to bring some of the same actors back. (Like Ian McKellen for the wizard Gandalf and Andy Serkis for the ghoulish Gollum.) I think it would be cool thing to have the continuity of the design and the look and feel of the world and use whatever actors we're able to repeat in the story.

AP: Any movement on that project?

Jackson directs Sean Astin in a scene from "Return of the King."
JACKSON: New Line hasn't talked to me about it yet. I can only assume they're motivated to do it now, but the rights are kind of complicated.

Man, if the hobbit thing fizzles out because of some legal issue i'm gonna be pissed off. Come on, it'll make more than enough money for all the greedy people who have some sort of stake in it to get their cut. After ROK, i'm going to be ravenous to see Bilbo and his trip to the lonely mountain.

Maybe the Tolkien family just wants to make sure the Hobbit is done the right way. After all, it was written for J.R.R.'s children.

I have not heard anything about that. I remember reading something about him having talked to the family before it was made and him understanding that this book had to be done the right way.

THE HOBBIT

LORD of the Rings director Peter Jackson said it may take years before prequel The Hobbit is made.

The Oscar-winning director admitted two film studios have to decide over the legal rights to it before the movie can be made.

Jackson said New Line Cinema has the rights to make the movie but MGM has the rights to distribute it.

Jackson said if he were going to direct the movie, he'd want it to feel like the rest of the trilogy.

He said: 'I'd want Ian McKellen to be back as Gandalf.'

Ian Holm wouldnt be able to play Bilbo, unless he agreed to have a permanent facelift, because he is too old! They had to hive him a temporary facelift in the FOTR by literally taping his face back for the bit in the cave!

i think everyone wants Ian Mckellen back as Gandalf. he portrayed him perfectly!

I don't think there would be a Hobbit without Ian. He is Gandalf. As to who could play Bilbo, I don't know.

The guy from Queen of The Damned, (Mr Someone Townsend, I think is his name) was going to get the role of Frodo, so maybe they can get him to play young Bilbo?

The similarity between him and the guy who actually played Frodo is good (I can't remember his name, how rude of me) they look very similar so it could work.

Stuart Townsend. He does not look like a hobbit at all.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: schmiggens

I can see it, even in that photo you posted fuscia, I think he could be a hobbit. (Is that a complment or an insult, I don't know?) And if Peter Jackson saw it, who am I to say otherwise?

I think Stuart actually turned down the role because of Queen of the Damned, but I am not sure. If I am right, then he could have been Frodo instead of the other guy (what is his name?) .

In this picture I think he looks more kind of like the guy who played Frodo.

Oh Schmiggens, I almost spat my ice cream out when I read that. He is kind of Hobbit like. I meant that Stuart is a little to manly in my opinion. I don't think hobbits should look like they can grow beards-yes strange but true.

Hobbit picture 'four years away'

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has said that it will be up to four years before he starts work on a film version of The Hobbit.

The Oscar winner said on a visit to Sydney there was a "desire" to make it, but not before lengthy negotiations.

"I think it's gonna be a lot of lawyers sitting in a room trying to thrash out a deal before it will ever happen," said the New Zealander.

The rights to JRR Tolkien's book are split between two major film studios.

Jackson, who is currently filming a remake of Hollywood classic King Kong, said he thought that the sale of MGM studios to the Sony Corporation would cast further uncertainty on the project.

The 43-year-old was in the Australian city to visit a Lord of the Rings exhibition, which has attracted 140,000 visitors since it opened in December.

[b]Lucrative [b]

The film-maker recently sued film company New Line Cinema for undisclosed damages over alleged withheld profits and lost revenue from the first part of the Middle Earth trilogy.

The Fellowship of The Ring from 2001 went on to make worldwide profits of $291 million (£152 million).

Jackson is thought to have secured the most lucrative film directing deal in history to remake King Kong, which is currently in production in Auckland.

The picture, which stars Naomi Watts and Oscar winner Adrien Brody, is due to be released in December.

Jackson has also committed to making a film version of Lovely Bones, based on the best-selling book by Alice Sebold.

Everytime I visit the City of Books in Portland I go straight for the Tolkien section and drool over the Red Book. I need that book. I've been mooching off my dad's books for my whole life because I only own the Hobbit, and that I've only had for a few years. There is a whole huge shelf devoted to Tolkien's works in Powell's Books, not only the Hobbit and LOTR.
