Okay let's say that PJ's job is being handed to you for the ending of ROTK.............. what changes (if any) would you make? What would be your perfect ending?? I am just curious guys since it seems that all of us are unhappy with it for one reason or another...................

Lets see. First Saruman would get his. The shire would at least be shown as being devastated, Sam would open the box and spread the magical dirt from Lorien. We then cut to a scene of the next spring with everything in bloom. Frodo and co. set sail and as they sail Galadriel's voice explains where they are going and what happens to the other members of the company. Very nice thread JH.

Yes Fire Amazon, I too wanted to see the Hobbits fight the evil men. They really came into their own at the end of the book. We missed seeing that in the movie.

However, if you recall what Galadriel said in FOTR once Frodo had looked into the mirror- 'The mirror shows many things... This is what will come to pass if you fail'. Or something along those lines. Galadriel was clearly foretelling the fate of the Shire if Frodo's quest should fail. Frodo's quest did not fail, and therefore the Shire was not destroyed. I must reiterate - this explanation covers the movie only. Tolkien's writings obviously depcited a different chain of events.

The audience can assume that Orthanc being destroyed, along with the remainder of Isengard, was punishment enough for Saruman. Tollkien loyalists will recall that Saruman did indeed get punished for his wickedness, in the form of Wormtongue turning on his master.

Technically Frodos quest failed because he did not cast the ring into the pits of Mount Doom but came under its power. The only reason it was destroyed was because of Gollums greed. Galadriel also said "Stray but a little and the quest will fail" The fellowship was broken and thus breaking the quest for all of the fellowship. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli went after Merry and Pippin towards Isengard because the hobbits were captured and Frodo and Sam went off to Mordor so technically the original quest failed.
