Or something along those lines. Galadriel was clearly foretelling the fate of the Shire if Frodo's quest should fail. Frodo's quest did not fail, and therefore the Shire was not destroyed. I must reiterate - this explanation covers the movie only. Tolkien's writings obviously depcited a different chain of events.
The audience can assume that Orthanc being destroyed, along with the remainder of Isengard, was punishment enough for Saruman. Tollkien loyalists will recall that Saruman did indeed get punished for his wickedness, in the form of Wormtongue turning on his master. | |
